GWreck: AL [pennant races are] no better:

Not that I care all that much but I was rooting for Texas to make the playoffs this year.

Rockin' Doc Sep 15 2009 06:52 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
I just hope the Angels continue to be postseason killers of the MFY.

The Second Spitter Sep 15 2009 08:36 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Thanks to what, in my opinion, is the most ridiculous rule in baseball, they'll meet the Red Sox in the first round and they tend to roll over for them in the playoffs.
|
Rockin' Doc Sep 15 2009 08:57 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Hey, don't burst my bubble, 3D. The hope of seeing an early exit by the Yankees is one of the few things I have to look forward to this post season.
|
Gwreck Sep 15 2009 09:55 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
I could see the Tigers beating the Yankees in the first round again, as they did in 2006. Verlander outpitches whomever and the Tigers get at least a split on the road, they can win that series.
|
The Second Spitter Sep 15 2009 10:57 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Another solution is to introduce a second wild card, and have the two wild card teams play a preliminary Wild Card round (best of 3) and then face the team with the best record in their league.
|
Edgy DC Sep 16 2009 07:20 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
If they're going to do that, then it should be a one-game free-for all.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 16 2009 08:12 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
I much prefer the 2nd Wild Card entry idea (one-game face-off to get in please) to any of the myriad of suggestions (mostly involving taking away home games) that artificially try to trip up the WC team en route to the WS.

Gwreck Sep 16 2009 08:29 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Whereas I am very much against adding ANY team to the postseason under any circumstances. Baseball's postseason exclusivity (8 or 30 teams) is crucial to maintaining a competitive and compelling regular season.

Speaking of the White Sox, from Baseball Prospectus:
I'm rooting for Ozzie's team after that quote.
|
Edgy DC Sep 16 2009 08:49 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Ozzie's a jerk.

For those who are hoping to watch a team collapse this September, I direct your attention to the Tiggers who have the Twins now only 4 GB and have to face them seven more times this year.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 18 2009 08:08 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Yeah, the Tiggers go to Twin-land this weekend for a 3-gamer that could make that race interesting if Minny takes at least 2.
|
The Second Spitter Sep 19 2009 02:27 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
The Twinkies are now within 3 of the Tiggers.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 19 2009 05:48 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Also, Texas's shot at a sweep against LAA disappeared early as they get shut-out for the 4th time in 5 games. Now 7.5 games out.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 19 2009 05:18 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Wow, Twins score 5 in the 8th to beat Detroit 6-2 in a game which had been dominated by Verlander up to that point.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 24 2009 09:06 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Twins & Tiggers both win to keep that race at Detroit +2.5
|
Frayed Knot Sep 25 2009 07:55 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Tiggers win (almost blew a 3-run 9th inning lead) whilst Twinkies sit - so the lead is back to 3 full games.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 26 2009 07:18 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Tigers get shut-out by Jake Peavy and the ChiSox while Twins beat Royals so it's down to 2 games.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 27 2009 08:13 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Gotta love the Twins & Tigers for making it interesting.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 28 2009 07:09 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Minny & Detroit both lost keeping the gap at 2 games.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 29 2009 06:57 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
* Minny & Detroit rained out yesterday. So it's 2 today (noon & 7) plus one each Wed & Thurs.
|
Gwreck Sep 30 2009 05:22 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Tigers/Twins split so it remains 2 games. Tigers' magic number is 4 and they could clinch with wins today and tomorrow vs. Minnesota.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 30 2009 06:44 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Minny came in to this series having to take at least 3 of 4 - so now it's the last 2 or forget it. Splitting will just spin their wheels and take two more days off the schedule.
|
Frayed Knot Oct 01 2009 02:52 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Twins smack around the Tigers in this afternoon's game and get a split of the 4-game series.
|
Edgy DC Oct 01 2009 09:43 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Head to St. Paul and play at Midway Stadium.
|
The Second Spitter Oct 02 2009 12:32 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
If Verlander has to pitch again in the regular season, they can kiss goodbye any hope of beating the Jankees.
|
Frayed Knot Oct 03 2009 06:54 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
- Tigers get thumped 8-0 by Peavy and the ChiSox

Cuddyer again - this time with a tie-breaking HR in the 8th. Dude's had a ton of big hits down the stretch.
|
Rockin' Doc Oct 04 2009 11:51 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Detroit jumps out to a 3-0 lead over the White Sox in Detroit. Jason Verlander is pitching well early on and the Tigers coming up in the home half of the third inning.
|
Frayed Knot Oct 04 2009 01:53 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Tigers did their part, wrapping up a 5-3 win.
|
Ashie62 Oct 04 2009 06:36 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
Twinkies do it without Johan Santana or any real contribution from who we traded to them
|
Frayed Knot Oct 04 2009 09:06 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
OK, I've changed my mind. I'm pulling for the Twins now.
|
Ashie62 Oct 04 2009 09:49 PM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
One less Circus catch by Granderson and their is no game on Tuesday

The Second Spitter Oct 05 2009 01:37 AM Re: In Search Of Pennant Races - AL Edition |
In circumstance where two-teams are tied within the same division, wouldn't it make sense to use head-head records or their records v division as a tie-breaker?
