You're Fired

Ramon Pena, chief of Latin American scouting
Luis Aguayo, minor league field coordinator

Snooze also related that Sandy Johnson, Minaya's top remaining lieutenant is considering retirement but that the Mets still want him.

Aguayo as I recall it was a Bernazard guy -- he was brought in as a coach in last year's midseason coach-swap. Pena though was considered a top wheel but is apparently being whacked for falling short of his expectations.

Re: You're Fired

Fred Wilpon may have offered a vote of confidence to Omar Minaya, but the GM's inner circle quietly is being dismantled.

Re: You're Fired

It's pretty common, though. When you want to crack down on a guy without firing him, you cut his legs out from under him. They did it to Valentine. Kind of did it to Randolph a little also.

I see this, though, as about getting rid of Bernazard associates as much as it is about getting rid of Minaya associates.

Now we know who that was.

AA manager Mako Oliveras
GCL Mets skipper Julio Franco

Mako was a Bernazard Guy, I wouldn't doubt Franco was too, though Omar sure loved him too.

PS, Jerry to meet with Omar Monday following the season to see how many of his coaches get fired. Snooze speculates all but Hojo are in trouble.

Jerry and Omar should pause during their meeting to thank whatever God they may believe in that they're the ones making the decisions, rather than the ones whose fates are being decided.

I'd not be surprised if more minor league types get the shaft , like that's going to have an effect on the big league team....Minaya brought in most of these guys I assume , hanging on by a thread he is I think.

The only reason I can think of is Wright and Francouer have already said they are going to his house for coaching in the off-season , that's a vote of confidence right there...I'm joking but I suppose if asked Minaya might tell us that with all the injuries Hojo didn't have a lot to work with.

Francouer seems to have worked well with him.

Re: You're Fired

If anything, I would assume it would be because of his role as Wright's mentor. It can certainly be argued that he didn't do a good job of it this year, but they may be thinking that firing HoJo could deepen David's funk.

I'm not saying I buy this reasoning, but I'm just speculating as to what the team's thinking might be.

Re: You're Fired

I think the Mets tend to get in too deep with "their guys" in general, investing not only in extra contract years and no-trade clauses, but a ton of energy into creating an atmosphere that supports their guys; and a public identity around them. The Mets are David Wright; Wright is Howard Johnson; there's no Mets without Wright; there's no Wright without Johnson.

Hojo also has more insulation than a guy like Warthen, since he's surrounded by former Met teammates in high profile official capacities like Darling and Hernandez. Their splits with other 86ers (Gooden, Mookie, Carter) were all pretty traumatic.

Re: You're Fired

Even losing Ojeda as a minor league pitching instructor led to a shower of bad publicity. I wouldn't be shocked that the germ of Ojeda returning as an inexperienced talking head was planted in an attempt to make up for that.

Old heroes are great to have around, but maybe best in p.r./community relations jobs. Doesn't mean they shouldn't coach, but if their coaching tenures aren't working out, I'd support pushing them toward's overpaid jobs in the p.r. stable, rather than hanging on to them and trying to redeem.

I'm certainly not certain that Wright's poor year (in terms of homers and strikeouts) is a result of Johnson tinkering undoing what was working. And I can't fault him for not teaching a team full of bench players to hit homers. My main problem with him is walks and the players not aquiring them. Two out in the ninth and down by a run last night and Castillo is first-pitch swinging. Castillo?

Cecil Cooper's been fired as Astros manager for like a week yet I only confirmed this fact yesterday.

Re: You're Fired

MOre from Lennon on this

WASHINGTON - Omar Minaya is not the White House favorite he used to be during the George W. Bush years, but the general manager still enjoys the Mets' trips to the nation's capital even though the former Rangers owner has turned over the keys to Air Force One.

For that reason, it's notable that Minaya skipped this week's visit to Nationals Park to stay back in New York for "housecleaning" purposes. With a huge offseason awaiting the Mets, and plenty of internal moves to be made, Minaya and his staff - along with the Wilpons - are well into that evaluation process.

Last week, Minaya fired Ramon Peņa, a special assistant in charge of Latin America operations, as well as Luis Aguayo, the minor-league field coordinator in Port St. Lucie. But he didn't stop there. A person familiar with the situation confirmed Tuesday that the Mets have cut loose two minor-league managers - Double-A Binghamton's Mako Olivares and Julio Franco of the Gulf Coast League club.

It also was revealed Tuesday that the Mets cut ties with Bill Masse, the batting coach at Triple-A Buffalo, who was promoted from Binghamton in June. Other than Peņa, a former trusted adviser to Minaya, these are not really franchise-shaking developments.

But what they do signal is that the Wilpons have delivered a stern message to Minaya and manager Jerry Manuel that ownership will not tolerate another season like 2009 - and that goes for every level of the organization. A team official indicated that the Mets' decision-makers have been meeting regularly for the past six weeks in an effort to sort out what went wrong this season.

The only thing they know is that the task is far from finished and more heads are likely to roll. There are more meetings scheduled for tomorrow's day off - also involving Manuel - as the conversation turns to his coaching staff.

Manuel said last weekend that he planned to sit down with Minaya and perhaps the Wilpons on Monday, before leaving for his Sacramento home, to discuss the fate of his coaches. A person familiar with the team's plans suggested Tuesday that changes will indeed be coming, but did not specify who would be getting the ax.

It also appears that Manuel's input will be relied on heavily in making those changes, but there will be pressure from the front office, as well. That puts Manuel in a tough spot and he didn't exactly rally to the coaches' defense when asked Sunday.

The most likely candidate to be gone is third-base coach Razor Shines - a friend of Manuel and his personal addition to the staff for this season. Not only did Shines do a poor job of handling runners, even Manuel threw him under the bus for his failures with Daniel Murphy's development in leftfield.

As for pitching coach Dan Warthen - probably next on the list - he was promoted from Triple-A on the same day that Manuel replaced Willie Randolph, so the manager doesn't quite have the same close attachment to Warthen as he would a longtime friend.

The biggest criticism of Warthen this season has been the staggering number of walks allowed by the staff; its total of 607 is only 12 short of the franchise record. Even so, Warthen had to deal with losing four of his five starters from the Mets' Opening Day roster to serious injury and juggle a staff patched together with mostly minor-leaguers.

"I just think it's difficult to evaluate based on what went wrong," Manuel said.

Hey, here's a way to help two teams with needs.
Howz about the Mets help San Diego fill that vacancy at GM by sending them Omar.
In return, they could send the Mets their first baseman.
And the Mets would pick up any remaining years on Towers' contract, too.

Seems fair to me.
