Keeping this simple. It doesn't matter if you're religious or not. Do you consider yourself to be "Jewish," whatever that might mean to you?

5-0 goyim so far, but I think our Jewish friends won't be here to vote today. The balance will probably tilt somewhat when we hear from the Hebrew precincts.

Born and raised a Catholic. I won't go into how that's worked out for me. I'm not into religion, but if was to re-explore it I'd look to Judaism or Hinduism. Not big on Jesus these days, too many holes. They knew it back then and threw in the Doubting Thomas.

??, ??? ??? ??????? Yeah, I'm Jewish. Don't do much for the holidays unless family is around or I'm dating someone who is also Jewish. Neither is the case this year, so I'm celebrating 5770 by pricing earthquake insurance. Try working with that Hebrew font. Not only does it read right to left (which I can deal with), but when you're editing, the right arrows go left and the left arrows go right (which I can't).

Me too. They began to lose me when they told me that the Communion doesn't symbolize the body of Christ, it actually is the body of Christ. I thought, well, then why is it bread and not meat? That one little doubt led to others, which eventually led my whole wall of belief to crumble.

I have some stories too, but not for the ??? ??????? ????? thread. When you cut and paste that, you HAVE to carriage return on the left of it. That's pretty cool. (carriage return? I need some rest)

Depending on the meat, of course.

Re: ??? ??????? ??????

I'm Lutheran, strong in faith and active in my church. I was a youth group leader and mentor for five years, but mostly took the last year off, The youth pastor today asked if I'd lead a middle school group again, but I'm kind of enjoying taking the break. I coach one of the two church softball teams, which is not quite as hazardous as working with middle school kids, but it has its moments. If you're doubting -- and are interested -- I recommend a book called "A Case For Christ" by Lee Strobel. He was a Chicago Tribune police reporter and avowed athiest. He went about trying to disprove Jesus existed or did the acts people claim, hoping to sway his wife, who was Christian. He grilled all kinds of historians and experts, trying to poke holes in all the stories. By the end of the book, he's convinced the other way. Again, I'm not telling anyone they're wrong or attempting to sway. But I thought it was an interesting book.

Lutheran too :) Sounds like a good book. I think true faith is a gift from God, but I also think it can be developed.

I'm going to put a plug in for the UUs -- my wife and I joined the local Unitarian Universalist chapter recently. Never even heard about it until she stumbled across it, but we've really enjoyed it. All the perks of a spiritual community (from all the ethics & morality stuff to charity to barbecues and community garage sales) without all the religious dogma. We're big fans.

Here's what I know about Unitarians: Charles Darwin called them "a feather bed for falling Christians." EDIT: I'm Googling around a bit, and that may not be a Darwin quote. I'm seeing it attributed to a variety of people. I just remember reading it in a biography of Darwin.

At the moment, the Gentiles lead 19 to 9. I expected it would, at least, be closer. Still, we do seem to be more Jewish than the overall population.

Re: ??? ??????? ??????

During college, I had a job in a chichi coffeehouse on the outskirts of Philly's biggest gayborhood. (NICE tips, btw.) One of our regulars was a UU priest who used to come in and cruise the clientele (along with my 75-year-old widowed co-worker). For HOURS. I'm pretty sure he ad-libbed the sermons.

You know, I've been living in the Philadelphia area for over twenty years now, but I still don't know where Philly's "gayborhood" is. But I'll take a guess: Is it... South Street?

This thread has taken an odd turn. To get back to the original subject matter (sort of) it was revealed in Fantastic Four some time back that Ben Grimm (the "real" one) is Jewish. Me, I'm not Jewish. I just play a mutated Jewish orange super-hero/monster here in this forum.
