Stars Ellen Page (Juno) as a Texas high school beauty pageant contestant who trades her purty pageant gowns for the cool and excitement offered by the world of roller derby.

Marcia Gay Harden plays the conservative, pageant-veteran mom that Page is rebelling against. Daniel Stern plays her understanding, beer-drinking, football-loving pappy.

Drew Barrymore directs and plays one of the roller derby girls. Also in the flick are "Maeby" from Arrested Development, the adorable Kristen Wiig from SNL, Juliette Lewis, Eve, and Jimmy Fallon as the roller derby PBP guy.

I dug it.

Saw it, dug it as well. Gave it 8 elbows.

Fallon was good in a small part, the guy who played the team's coach was also very funny.

I have trouble imagining Drew Barrymore presenting anything that isn't, sort of, insultingly dumb. Am I alone there?

I agree with you but that's her schtick, man. It appears to have served her well.

Yeah, but I mean in terms of serving myself as filmgoer, thus the adverb "insultingly."

Re: Whip It (2009)

Seems to me the whole idea of making a "girl-power" flick starring Juno as a roller-derby chick is a $ure-fire winner, and about the least creative thing ever.

Exactly and Pat Zachry.

She seems to think she's carved this niche as the one who walks the line between exploitation and empowerment. Her publicist will tell you that she's seizing the vehicles of exploitation and turning them into weapons of empowerment, or something, but that's just self-serving revisionist nonsense. Charlie's Angels is Charlie's Angels is Charlie's Angels. Own it.

Hey, Drew. I'm just not that into you.

Drew Barrymore = parts of Gracie Allen + Carole Lombard + Jody Foster (but not always the best parts)

i like her anyway. I always root for her and she makes me feel protective of her.

Re: Whip It (2009)

This film is set in Austin, TX and the surrounding areas, yet none of the major characters have Texas accents.

WTF?

Page's best work IMO (and most "bitchy") is in this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424136/
