You feel it?

The team's clicking. They have a chance to win three in a row for the first time since a five-game tear July 25-30 left them nine back and six off the wild card. That last win was the first half of a twin-bill with Colorado, and Santana struck out eight in seven scoreless innings. They dropped the makeup night game and the lug nuts started coming loose.

Anyhow, this is like that period of spring training where a good team starts gelling and stops playing unfocused and sloppy, realizing that the regular season is about to start. Except that this would be the end of a three-month sloppy spring training, and the season ends tomorrow. And this isn't a very good team. But, you know, still. Can you feel it?

Re: You feel it?

I find myself wanting badly for the Mets to win tomorrow and finish at 70-92. Knowing they won 70 games and not 69, it just seems like a bigger jump thanks to the base 10 number system.

Re: You feel it?

Again, fman is losing edge points by not working 69 better.

All those two-out RBI and stuff.

Delighted that win or lose, they finish with a record they've never had before. 70-92 does sound less worse than 69-93.

And isn't the goal to have meaningful games in October?

I give up.
Nobody's beating either of those lines, much less both of them in one post, for the October BOCs.
They should get the tag-team award.

Re: You feel it?

Glad to see the mini streak to close out this disappointing season. I would have been much happier had they finished the last series of the season like this in 2007.

It's all in the timing and the Mets timing hasn't been too good the past few seasons.

Re: You feel it?

The alternative explanation is that they can't win when it matters most, or on a more microcosmic level, can't deliver in key situations.

Re: You feel it?

Well, first of all, I'm being more than a little silly. Second of all, I wouldn't draw too many clutch conclusions either.

If there's any point, it's that winning beats losing under any circumstances.

(Note that I'm aware that by finishing with a flourish, the Mets caught the Diamondbacks in the league-wide standings and --- depending how these things are figured --- may have cost themselves a draft position. And please note also that I don't give a fig.)

Please put your seat backs and tray tables in their upright and locked position, and check around you for any belongings.

Thanks for flying with us, and we hope to see you next season.
