Affair is foul for ESPN star
Ex-Met GM's dumped mistress has a 'Fatal Attraction' freakout
By JEANE MacINTOSH in Wilton, Conn., and DAN MANGAN in NY

Last Updated: 5:26 AM, October 21, 2009

She's not going to be ignored, Steve!

ESPN analyst Steve Phillips had a fling with a 22-year-old production assistant, who, after being dumped, taunted his wife with "Fatal Attraction"-like phone calls and a letter that bragged about her sexcapades with Phillips while taking pot shots at their "loveless marriage," The Post has learned.

The former Met general manager, whose tenure with the team was rocked by admissions of infidelity, confessed to his wife and local cops that he had slept with ESPN assistant Brooke Hundley several times this past summer before dumping her.

You would think that after rebuilding his career after the last affair was exposed he would be greatful to have what seems like a great gig on ESPN and not mess with that.

I should note that Phillips rebuilt his career after getting fired from the GM job and not after the affair ,but still you would think he would know better.

Yeah, he was suspended for a short period during the 1998-99 offseason. They actually exhumed Frank Cashen to fill in, and it was Cashen who completed the Mel Rojas-Bobby Bonilla trade.

And since the tenuous connection between rumor and fact for accuracy's sake has been a little eroded here, well, it's probably about time to just unload the inbox of all the sordid rumors we've received over the years about various ESPN employees. Chances are, at this point, there's some truth to them. We'll just throw 'em out there and see how many "no comments" or, you know, actual comments or "you would be completely wrongs" there are about these situations.

There was a book out several years ago (I never read it) about the culture at the ESPN campus there in Bristol, Conn (or, as Bob Raissman calls it, Bristol Clown College) talking about (among other things) how sexual harassment was both out of control yet an accepted part of the work environment.
They've supposedly cleaned up their act since and the suspension of Harold Reynolds sounds like it may even have been an over-compensation to distance themselves from those earlier days.

A suspension during the LCS & WS can't be a great thing for Phillips' career or his future there. That's like a tax accountant not being able to work March & April.
I wonder if Bobby V. is chuckling to himself right about now?

As a few other posters mentioned, sportfucking is part of the corporate culture there (they handle themselves like louche athletes on the road... even MORE so than most remote crews). And not just peer-to-peer ink-dipping (which is somewhat understandable; I mean, it's Bristol... there's precious little else around for them to 'throw it on'-- back me up, Hartfordians?), but also senior managers bringing the "hey, intern/PA, sit on this" crap. Disciplinary measures, as noted in the Freeman book ("Juiced" for ESPN's boy's club?) and elsewhere anecdotally, seems to be almost entirely results-based-- "this is embarrassing, you're suspended"-- rather than process-based.

Will Leitch of Deadspin has a book, "God Save the Fan," that is a collection of sometimes funny rants. The best parts are when he wails on ESPN, with the manufactured personalities and faked debates. He said many of the opinions you hear expressed on there are assigned and written for the personalities. So, say, if Kruk picks the Yankees to win the series and Karl Ravitch picks the Phillies, it's because they were told to.

I've never watched it the same way again.

The anti-whistleblowing glaze topping the culture might be even thicker at a place like ESPN, because of what it's covering. The importance of hierarchy, dues-paying and shut-up-and-do-the-work probably tends to be a lot more strongly underlined in a corporation that covers-- and glorifies, and emulates-- football locker rooms, baseball organizational structures and the like than, say, one that covers music (or another, similar cultural corner that celebrates the "outsider" at all).

[Funny what you said about SPIN-- about 2/3 of the folk I've ever known from RS, SPIN and the like have offered me "bumps" at one time or other. (About half of THOSE while they were ostensibly working.)]

I don't know about deeply, but I guess the answer is because that smug foolery spills over. It spills over into the games, which their reporters call, and it spills over into broader culture, where sports fans think that's an embraceable way to act.

And I guess, you might care because there are real victims. How many talented young journalists ended up bailing out, discouraged and dismayed after a year as a junior staffer among the dickwielding denizens of Bristol?

I know I certainly did at SPIN. It kind of soured me on music. That case I cited above --- I worked under that young woman. My sister and I agreed that she was talented and adorable, but she covered her freckles in pale makeup, wore push up bras, and (surprise) never seemed happy for a minute --- a decent person trying to play the douchebags' game.

Were you at Spin when Axl Rose called out Bob Guccione Jr. in the song Get In The Ring?

I think I left the week those came out. The anticipation for the albums was so intense that I made a comment in the editorial room that they would go to numbers one and two even if Axl just stuck a mic up up his ass and recorded his farts. Somebody stole the crack (I have better than that) and used it in his story. Me pissed.

ESPN gets heavy rotation during college hoops season for me. And I still like Baseball Tonight over the MLB network shows.

I'm with you on college b-ball (or at least I was before we cut cable loose). But "Baseball Tonight?" Force of habit? 'Cause, I mean, it's so much less... GOOD than the MLB stuff.

I probably would've bought them if he did.

And that's basically what I got with The Spaghetti Incident.

Ha:

Former Mets manager Bobby Valentine ripped Phillips for his off-the-field dalliances before Phillips left the Mets in 2003.

In a strange twist, Valentine will be doing some of the baseball analysis for Phillips, who took a leave of absence to deal with his latest domestic crisis.

Re: Just Stevie Being Stevie?

According to a Twitter post by ESPN publicist Josh Krulewitz, baseball analyst Steve Phillips is no longer employed by ESPN. Phillips was involved in a sex scandal with another ESPN employee last week and had announced he was taking a leave of absence.

Krulewtiz's post: "Steve Phillips is no longer working for ESPN.. His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged , and it became evident it was time to part ways."

ESPN Spokesdweeb: Chris Berman has become an attention whore who has demonstrated a willingness to sell himself out to any endorsement deal that will have him (including, at the present moment, both Applebee's burgers and fries AND Weight-Watchers) to the point where it's often tough to tell where the announcer in him leaves off and the carnival barker takes over and, as a result, his ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been ... ENHANCED BEYOND FUCKIN' BELIEF so we have no plans to part ways with him until the goddam sun burns out!!

Ya gotta pick your vices carefully around there.

I mean if they want to talk about conflicts of interest marring the ability to do a job they can start with a sizable number of their on-air personnel doing commercial work and off-field appearances with half the big-name athletes active today even though they're supposed to then continue to cover them objectively (assuming they ever did in the first place).

Re: Just Stevie Being Stevie?

In Thank You for Smoking, the cigarette industry lobbyist Nick Naylor hires a high end PR firm to put together a campaign to discourage teenagers from smoking. Because he's just putting on a show for Congress, he wants the plan to be expensive and look expensive, but to fail. The slogan they come up with --- Everything Your Parents Said About Smoking Is Right --- is brilliant for many reasons, not least of which, they explain to Nick, because of how it breaks down, including the phrase "Smoking Is Right."

I think of that when I read "His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged , and it became evident it was time to part ways" but accidentally catch "ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged."

Now that there's an opening at ESPN, I think that Jerry Manuel would be a great TV analyst. He loves talking to the press, he's frank in his opinions, and you never know what he's going to say. In fact, I think he'd be so good that he should resign as manager of the Mets to work at ESPN. The Mets will have to sacrifice (something Jerry knows all about), but it would be for the good of the game.
