They want to get rid of baseball? Fuck 'em. No idea who's going to get it but I'd like to see it be Rio. Later

Chicago.....the presence of Obama will swing things...I hear he promised the Poles and Czechs a fancy missile defese shield if they voted for his hometown.

I have no idea. If it wasn't for Obama getting so much face time this week lobbying for his adopted Chicago I probably wouldn't have realized the US was in the running today. (I took Brazil)

I think Rio. South America is the only populated continent to never have hosted an Olympiad. I'm hoping that Antarctica puts in a bid for the 2020 Summer Games.

Chicago would be good for my neck of the woods. If they were to get the nod, it has been said a lot of the cycling would be quite near me.

I read that South America was the only such continent, but I didn't check the facts. You're right, Africa hasn't hosted either. How about Cairo in 2020?

Frayed Knot Oct 02 2009 07:52 AM Re: 2016 Olympics |
I'm with Rio. Chicago - Obama helps. The European-based IOC likes him (or any Democrat) more than Bush (or any Republican) and it's his (sort of) hometown. Plus it's more TV money. But the current economic climate hurts, as does transportation issues and lukewarm local support. Madrid - 2012 is already going to be in Europe (London) as was 2004 (Athens) and even 2014 Winter in western Russia. Even Barcelona wasn't all that long ago (1992) for a mid-sized country to have again so quickly. Former IOC Prez Juan Antonio Samaranch is a Spaniard and is pushing for it but he may have used up all his favors getting it to his hometown in '92. I think the IOC might save its next Europe chip to go to one of the reviving post-communist central/eastern cities, like say Prague. Tokyo - Just in Asia in 2008 - and in same time-zone for Sydney 2000 which the TV gurus don't like. Not great local support from what I read Rio - One of the world's most populous cities in the 5th most populous nation. South America has never hosted an Olympics (Mexico City '68 was closest) and the IOC likes to think of themselves as being forward-looking not trend-following High crime is a problem but reportedly Brazil has skirted much of the planet's economic woes recently

I have a somewhat silly idealistic thought , Grim put forward Cairo which I am sure would be great. I'm thinking a country in Africa that right now is in the dump and getting the 2020 Games might be the imputus needed to get the the place sorted . Obviously a place suffering from famine wouldn't be ideal but a place like Khartoum might be. Khartoum in 2020

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9U6URQSF6U Tall and tanned and young and lovely the girl from Ipanema goes walking and when she passes each man she passes goes Aaah! When she moves it's like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gently that when she passes each man she passes goes Aaah! Oh - but he watches so sadly How - can he tell her he loves her He - would just give his heart gladly But each day when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead not at he Tall and tanned and young and lovely the girl from Ipanema goes walking and when she passes he smiles but she doesn't see no she doesn't see she just doesn't see...

Thought the Samaranch endorsement for Madrid was bullshit. IOC gave the Olympics to Barcelona as a gesture to him and now this blabber? I'm good with Rio.

I just can't believe the US entry gets eliminated in the first round after we go through the trouble of jetting the most powerful person in the world over there. I mean, imagine turning down Oprah Winfrey like that!

TransMonk Oct 02 2009 02:48 PM Re: 2016 Olympics |
Well, I would think that having the Olympics in Chicago would in some part help the struggling economy, at least in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Which is just one of the entirely fucked up things he inheirited from the last (Republican) admistration. I'm pretty sure if he would have spent this week warring it up, he would be blasted for doing that and not lobbying for a USA Olympics.
|
Edgy DC Oct 02 2009 02:52 PM Re: 2016 Olympics |
Well, he's not getting blasted. Some strategist is floating a strategy. Good luck in gaining traction with that on a Friday afternoon. Political camps will attack each other sho's the sun's gon' shine. Ignore it and die healthier and happier.

Frayed Knot Oct 02 2009 02:59 PM Re: 2016 Olympics |
I heard/read a bunch of hysterical rants this past week both from the 'He has to Go!!' (to Copenhagen) crowd and the 'How can he go while we're so screwed up here?' bunch. Both views are way over the top IMO and neither is going to make a bit of difference in the long run (or even the short). Most countries tend to send their biggest 'stars' to these things, both political and otherwise. But that's more a custom elsewhere then it is in this country as many countries treat something like the Olympics as more of a public/private cooperation - if not mostly a government project. Then there are the smaller nations or those who have never hosted one yet who are more likely to view winning as a validation of their status as a first-class nation. Pele was reportedly astonished (and critical) that Michael Jordan wasn't going to Denmark to lobby for his city the way Pele was for his.

Nymr83 Oct 02 2009 03:02 PM Re: 2016 Olympics |
imo Obama should send Biden/Hillary for something like the olympics, but I wouldn't care either way.
Pele was reportedly astonished (and critical) that Michael Jordan wasn't going to Denmark to lobby for his city the way Pele was for his.[/quote:1exwvba3] Insert Derek Jeter joke here.
|
Benjamin Grimm Oct 02 2009 03:42 PM Re: 2016 Olympics |
Well, Jeter would certainly know how to bring home the rings. But the Olympics involves five rings, and Derek has been stuck at four for years now. I suspect he wouldn't be up for the task.

Edgy DC Oct 02 2009 03:58 PM Re: 2016 Olympics |
That's good for 200. Other too-obvious chestnuts the judges also would have accepted: [list:xqj5cn43][*:xqj5cn43]Sure, Rio is big and beautiful and exotic, but Derek would have stressed Chicago's intangibles.[/*:m:xqj5cn43] [*:xqj5cn43]Derek Jeter on the committee would have made the Obamas better delegates.[/*:m:xqj5cn43] [*:xqj5cn43]While in Europe, Jeter would have gathered up Roman Polanski, jumped in the air, and thrown him home.[/*:m:xqj5cn43][/list:u:xqj5cn43]
Well, I would think that having the Olympics in Chicago would in some part help the struggling economy, at least in Chicago and the surrounding areas.[/quote:2g8jjhs4] Just a guess, but I imagine that the Olympics is a net economic boom about as often as a new ballpark is --- occasionally and only when using creative math.
