OK, let's see how Important a poll can be in the post-yt era on here as we choose the one surf-rock tune, from the below choices only, that you have to take with you on your desert-island mix tape. I tried to go with original artists but not sure if I did. Which is the best and why? A) Telstar -- The Tornados http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2ybCjf6ras B) Walk, Don't Run -- the Ventures http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ11y7pYl-8 C) Squad Car -- Eddie & the Showmen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUoSVVujARk D) Wipe Out -- the Surfaris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH5WGWX4MPg E) Apache -- The Shadows http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY-rPDwzM9M F) Perfidia -- The Ventures http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyUcnoracMM G) Pipeline -- The Chantays http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j09C8clJaXo H) Miserlou -- Dick Dale & the Del-Tones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIU0RMV_II8

Re: Desert Island Surfing

Jeez , I only know one song from this list and I only know "Wipe Out" through "The Fat Boys" version. Obvioulsy growing up in wet and miserable Tipperary didn't lend itself to surf music.

Re: Desert Island Surfing

All worthy, though I hadn't heard "Squad Car" before. I'm going "Miserlou" with "Apache" and "Walk, Don't Run" right behind.

This is a great poll. I recommend adding "The Hawaii 5-0 Theme." I realize it's drenched in horns and not surf guitar but the rumblin drums definitlely qualify it. If you don't know them all (I don't), then I recommend you listen.

Dick Dale rules. If it's good enough for Tim Roth to rob diners to it's good enough for me on Cuntkick Island.

Alllllways loved Telstar. I wonder if the blonde in the DelTones vid is in a rest home by now.

Re: Desert Island Surfing

The "Pipeline" video link was broken, so I stuck another link in there --- one of them playing on the Lawrence Welk show. I can't vote "Perfidia" because that's a song I know the lyrics to, which keeps it from being a pure instrumental in my head. I went with "Walk, Don't Run." It tells me that a watchable movie made on the cheap is about to start on channel nine. It's also a good oddball dancefloor filler. Dick Dale is runnng away with this thing. I know he's the big kid on the block but still I'm surprised a bit. Did he string his guitar upside down? It kind of looks like he did. And his bass player looks like Al Franken.

I think it's funny how the other guitarists are practically statues against his energy. Prolly he made them! Neat song and I always wondered what it was, but Telstar for me, I often think of it even now.
I recommend adding "The Hawaii 5-0 Theme." [/quote:3a7yla1v] Watch @ 1:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc4MSie-P0k That's a great flick, btw. I'll write a review one of these days.

Went with Wipeout but feel like I should have gone with Dick Dale. I'd take Duane Eddy playing Peter Gunn over any of these.

Re: Desert Island Surfing

I've been wikipediaing these songs as I listen. Telstar was more about outer space than surfing, and probably isn;t guitar enough to win. But a great melody and change. Two interesting things about Walk Don't Run: The Ventures recorded it with a session drummer who was given a choice to take 1/4th of the profits or 25 bucks for the recording. He chose the cash! That song I found out was written 5 years earlier by Johnny Smith, a jazz guitarist who is still alive at age 87. A true classic, could take the gold. Squad Car! Thrilling! Fierce! Fun! Begs you to speed as you hear it. The Showmen were named for the model of amplifiers they used. Wipe Out -- Originally the B-side of the single "Surfer Joe" -- not an instrumental, but completely awesome in its own right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD6LKzhQcDc The drum solo in Wipe Out was a sped-up version of the drummer's high school marching band cadence. Doubly awesome. The Shadows apparently were a big influence on Mark Knopfler's guitar style, which scores them points with me, but being British I don't think Apache takes it. The Ventures, I think, do a mean cover of it though. It's chilling, man. I didn't think I knew Perfidia had origins as a vocal song, though I just listened to a version and it's obvious I had. Pipeline is also pretty ferocious, great contrast from that cheesed-up Lawrence Welk video! A serious contender. One time a guy with a boom box on the sideline played "Miserlou" loudly just as my team was "pulling" to start a tournament ultimate frisbee game. That's like a kickoff in football, and in serious ggame it's a big intense sprint as the O forms their opening play and the D hustles to take marks. Every player on both teams couldn't resist clapping as they took their positions. clapclap. CLAP clapclap CLAP It was awesome. The end. Oh and the winner is... ...Squad Car...
