Apartment Fire

Was out to dinner last night with my sister, my brother-in-law and their 2 daughters. I dropped them off on my way home and they were greeted with a battalion of fire trucks trying to control a blaze in their apartment. Video of the fire here. After assessing the damgae this morning, it was determined that the entire apartment must be gutted. They have to live elsewhere for 4-6 months. They lost everything. Amazing the age we live in that there is video of this on the 'net almost immediately.

Re: Apartment Fire

Jeez but that sucks , any reason yet as to why it happened?

Re: Apartment Fire

So it was actually in their apartment? Geez, that sucks. Do they know what caused it? I lived at 105th and Broadway for about a month or so, that building looks like it was across the street (on the downtown-bound side, yes?)

Re: Apartment Fire

Wow. Good that they were out and nobody from any adjoining aparments was killed. Any notion what caused it?

Re: Apartment Fire

No idea what caused it yet. Yes it was actually in their apartment. Damage was mostly confined to their place but some water and smoke damge all through their floor and some above and below. JCL - their bldg is on the SE corner, we grew up right across the street from that building on the NE corner. Where and when did you live there?

Re: Apartment Fire

Just terrible, I can't imagine the horror of coming home one day and having nothing. Please let us know if there is some kind of relief fund or support we can lend.

Re: Apartment Fire

Thank you, that's really nice of you. Fortunately its not necessary. Looks like insurance will cover everything. My sister's out looking for apartments to rent right now.

Re: Apartment Fire

Now I'm confused, I was only there for a couple months in '97. I lived in the building with Cannon's Pub on the ground floor.

Re: Apartment Fire

Sorry - I meant say that I grew up in the bldg on the northWEST corner.

Re: Apartment Fire

I think I was at 107 (NE corner) not 105 and the pub was OConnell's not Cannons. Sorry to make your sister's tragic fire turn into a stupid exercise in me forgetting where I used to live.

Re: Apartment Fire

Sounds like you frequented that pub(whatever it's name was) too often JCL.

Re: Apartment Fire

No worries. I mostly posted it because I was just stunned that first thing this morning when I searched it - I actually got video. Everybody's fine, stuff was destroyed but nobody's hurt or homeless and this what you pay your insurance premiums for.

Re: Apartment Fire

That appears to be in the building that houses Henry's restaurant on the first floor. GOOD FOOD! Canon's is up the street about 107 I think. Friendly Mets bar. The Abbey Pub is on 105, just east of Broadway. I think I swilled there with Bucket. I'm a bit hazy, tho. Excellent atmosphere. Sorry about the fire, Soup, any way of sending some basic supplies to help?

Yes, we watched Game 1 or 2 of the 2001 World Series there.

Re: Apartment Fire

That is awful, it's eerie how it looks like somebody is waving something out the window on that video. Glad everyone;s okay, but so sorry about the loss of their things and the heartache they must be feeling. What a nightmare.

Glad everyone is OK and unhurt. Stuff, much easier to replace than people.

The Abbey Pub is where I was (eating dinner and drinking Shirley Temples with my dad) when Hank Aaron hit #715. Thanks again for all the sympathy and offers to help. If they do find that they are in need of something I will let you all know. They were smashing them and water was flying out the windows. It was crazy.
