WS Trivia

Fox Sports just put up a graphic indicating that Joe Girardi is the 7th MLB player to play for a team and then manage that same team in the World Series.

Naturally, they did not identify the other six. It occurs to me though, that this question has a very Metly connection.

So, can you name all six?

Re: WS Trivia

I think I misunderstood the question. He meant, play for the team in a WS AND manage them in a WS, I was thinking play for the team, and then manage them in a WS.

By the stricter standards, Hornsby and Martin are correct. The others are swing-and-misses.

Re: WS Trivia

I didn't see the graphic but I'm assuming it's played for a team in the WS and then later managed that same team in a WS.
Otherwise I suspect there'd be a lot more than just 7.

Re: WS Trivia

There's way more than six. Maybe I got the parameters wrong - it was only on the screen for a few seconds. But there's others that are coming up here and in my mind.

1. Ozzie Guillen
2. Phil Garner
3. Bobby Valentine
4. Yogi Berra
5. Billy Martin
6. Gil Hodges
7. Tommy Lasorda (though his cup o coffee was as a Brooklyn Dodger and not an LA Dodger)
8. Dusty Baker
9. Joe Girardi

So that's more than 7 right there.

Maybe the question was "Played IN THE WORLD SERIES for a team and then later managed it to the WS," which would rule out Guillen, Garner, Berra and Hodges, most of these guys in fact.

Yogi's in. He managed the Yanks in the '64 Series they lost. (Cards?)

So... Berra, Hornsby (Cards AND Cubs, apparently), Martin. We need 4 more.

Re: WS Trivia

So, if you're not counting guys who didn't play in a WS for the same team (like Berra and Hodges for the Mets, for example) and also rule out the player/managers, like Hornsby, then who's left?

1. Joe Girardi
2. Billy Martin
3. Yogi Berra (managed the '64 Yankees)
4.
5.
6.
7.

Who else?

Hornsby was player/manager on both those squads. I don't know that he counts.

There's a bunch of player-managers who pulled the trick, apparently (par example: not sure if he got in a WS at-bat, but even McGraw played-managed for the 1905 Giants).

Hell, I don't think the Blue Jays existed during his playing career.

OE: They had been extant for two years at the time of his retirement. He never played for 'em (nor did they make the WS in that time, natch).

And I JUST got it (and confirmed with B-R). Shall I reveal, or d'you guys want to keep poking?

Re: WS Trivia

For those of you confused by the Blue Jays comment, I originally had Cito Gaston in my post. Then I realized he had never played for the Jays and removed it from my post. But LWFS replied in the interim.

Re: WS Trivia

Ralph Houk -- still living, just turned 90.
Haven't seen or heard from him in years; I suspect that means either that he's been ill or maybe it's because he represents those Yanqui years that they don't like to talk about so the club never invites him anywhere.
