Wow!
I never collected them, barely read some of them. I guess those color spreads on the underwater pretzel throw semis from Provo, Utah never really interested me.

But there are two I would like to have. The first was the issue before Super Bowl III when the SI football "expert" named Tex Maulle seriously predicted that Baltimore would beat the Jets by the score of 66-0.
The second would be the issue in which they reported the results of the game (I'm not sure if they forced Maulle to write it).

I love stories about overly compulsive collectors.

Ash: Vintage SI's go for about $5-8 regardless of cover <<<

There are vintage covers that fetch way more than $5-8.

I think his point was that the minimum is 5 to 8 bucks.

Maule said no such thing. He clearly thought the Colts would win, but did not give a score and seemed to think the 17-point betting line was a bit high.

The second would be the issue in which they reported the results of the game (I'm not sure if they forced Maulle to write it).
Of course Maule wrote it; he was their #1 football writer at the time.

Realistically, it was hard to think that the Jets could beat Baltimore, and the Jets benefited by a lot of good luck, most notably the fact that they were forced due to personal issues to run against Ordell Braase, who had a bad back and was playing in pain and thus ineffective. They also got some good bounces on tipped balls, and help when Morrell didn't see his primary receiver wasn't wide open downfield. But going into the game, no one other than Namath and die-hard Jets fans thought they could pull it off.
