Quality starts?!

In my day, it was wins and losses, not these new-fangled, algebra problems dressed up as baseball statistics.

Google Books has most every Baseball Digest available in fairly wieldy navigation form. Plenty of issues from the '70s and '80s. I discovered BD in 1972 and at one point owned every issues from 1974 to 1988.

go to: books.google.com

Reading their picks for the hot rookies of 1951. Barely mentioned as also-rans: Gil McDougald and shortstop Mickey Mantle. Not mentioned at all: Willie Mays.

Excellent article....fun to read that Doc had 33 quality starts out of 35....WOW

Got a kick out of the Scouts report under that article

Veteran Scout Names the Major Leagues' Best

Worst arm , outfield , infield or anywhere - Lee Mazzilli (Pittsburgh) - Ouch

Best fastball: Dwight Gooden (New York Mets).

And then the ad for the major league tryouts....

Re: Mets Junk in the Trunk

I used to like the "Rookie Reports" issue each year. I'd always get my hopes up. For example, the one on Bud Harrelson said "Good power for a shortstop".
Then, I saw him play.
Then, I stopped buying Baseball Digest.

But for a long time, it was the only place you could find semi-up-to-date rosters.

Tom Seaver also appeared on the inaugural February 1970 issue of the short-lived pulpy "Score Magazine". I can't find a decent picture of that issue on the web and I don't subscribe to any web-hosting image storing sites, but here's an active ebay link to a pending auction for that mag:

Kong's got the best junk in his trunk.

I remember reading that article in 1976, somewhat surprised the Mets would cop to Shea Stadium having been "skid row" for home run hitters. Guess they could admit it once they had a legitimate slugger.

Grass is on the way out, no doubt about it.

Always thought the Braves were trying too hard with that giant leap for the southeast business -- especially since the Giants finished directly behind them in the West.

The West...it didn't cross my mind for years that Atlanta being in the same geographical setup as three California teams was odd. As the late '90s and early '00s would prove, it was preferable.

Today is house cleaning and organizing day over here. I was going through some old stuff and came across this piece of Mets memorabilia. I stored it in a box decades ago (with other junk) and then forgot about it until today. Years (and years) ago, the Daily News ran a two-page centerfold caricature of the Mets, and then licensed that caricature for etching onto a glass mirror. The prior owner of this item told me that these glass mirrors were produced in limited quantities and are scarce. I have no idea how accurate that story is, or how rare this glass is. But I own one of these.

How many Mets in the glass can you identify? Each Met is identified by last name on his cap, which I blacked out.

One guess per post.

Subjective trivia question: Which Met or Mets ought to have been included in the caricature, but wasn’t/weren't?

Loved those. One season they had one a week in the Sunday paper, I think. I tried to collect them all.
Maybe they did that a few times over the years, I dunno.
I remember the one of Willie Mays because he was making a basket catch with an actual basket, IIRC.

My answer to the subjective trivia question would be Mickey Lolich. Why Brown, but not Lolich? And if Lolich was initially included in the caricature but then cropped out after he announced his retirement, then why did Leon Brown remain in the caricature? Brown was traded before Lolich announced his retirement. Or did Lolich confirm that he would not return to the Mets for the 1977 season months before he officially announced his retirement?

Where's Mickey? And Leo Foster? And Pepe Mangual?

I honestly believe(d) that's Leo Foster's caricature (based on press packet photo) and the artist screwed up and drew "Brown". Leon Brown was off the radar heading into 1977.

Lolich had made it clear long before Opening Day he wouldn't be back. My question is where's Ray Sadecki? He made the team for a brief second go-round.

Glad to see Bob Myrick was part of the crew if only to confirm the existence of Bob Myrick as something more than my default No. 44.

Sorry this got in the way of your late August spring cleaning, but this was fun. Thanks. (And Willie w/basket is now my wallpaper.)

Re: Mets Junk in the Trunk

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 27 2010 02:12 PM

Both Tug Mcgraw and his MFY counterpart reliever, Sparky Lyle, were drawn wearing fireman hats

I saved the entire comic book section for each DN Sunday edition that included those Stark caricatures from 1973. (Dick Tracy on the front cover; Dondi on the back) I've scanned some of the cartoons into my computer. There were 11 in all ... the starting eight, the ace pitcher, a reliever and the manager. Staub was swinging a baker's rolling pin. Fregosi was no longer a Met on the day that his caricature appeared.

Re: Mets Junk in the Trunk

Does anybody remember the 1982 Daily News Mets Starks? Each caricature took up the entire two page centerfold in the Sunday comics section. The cartoons were, thus, twice the size of the '73's, but with folds down the middle, which were unavoidable.

There were only six Mets (and MFY's, I presume, though I didn't bother to save or track those) ... Staub (again with the rolling pin), Kingman, Brooks, Wilson, Allen and Stearns.

Hey, Bruce Stark. Rusty was BBQ chef, not a baker.

Hey, the late Dik Browne. Vikings didn't have buzzsaws.

Let's be honest about those caricatures. They're good, but what elevates them to excellent is the coloring. Did Stark do that also?

I think you're hiding your coolest Met jerseys from the forum. Here's what you're missing from the 1980 Magic is Back ad campaign besides the Mazzilli subway strip insert that was displayed inside MTA trains above the seating benches:

A huge Magic is Back Lee Mazzilli poster (about 4' x 4' or perhaps even larger) This hard to find (but I have one) subway poster contains the same photography and copy that is on the Mazzilli strip --- but the layout is different because the subway poster is square while the strip is rectangular.

A Magic is Back subway poster (rectangular and not as large as the aforementioned Maz poster) including photographs of practically every single 1980 Met. Even Ed Glynn.
