Ownership, Part Duex

OK, forget about Mark Cuban (from the other thread).

Imagine if you will a group headed up by Dave Checketts (but sans Rush. . .unless you are talking about Geddy, Alex, and Neil as minority investors) to bail out/deliver us from the Wilpons.

Good? I say yes. It could be a glorious return to the Big Stage by a guy who has proven that he could get the job done here (but was unfaily run out of town by another pairing of an over-meddlesome and not very competant father-and-son team).

I doubt that Checketts would blame other team's medical staffs and scary newspaper-reporters-with-hidden-agendas-to-get-another-job for his own mistakes. MSG ran like clockwork under him.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

Is this a poll?

How has he gotten the job done?

I don't think you can fairly say that the Mets have an "overly meddlesome" father-and-son team. It sounds like you're trying to draw irrelevant parallels, trying to make the Wilpons somehow culpable in the Dolans' actions.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

Dave Checketts ? , really?....what has he done to merit such praise....his last few seasons in NY were nothing special......The Rangers despite having a baseball type payroll failed to make the playoffs for several seasons running and his current St. Louis Blues are rebuilding .

I agree that his tenure in NY ended badly because of the idiot Dolan , I think he's a good exec but does he have the capital for a team like the Mets?

You're also attibuting the Adam Rubin gaffe to the Wilpons when it was Minaya, as well as mischaracterizing it.

Why exclude Rush?

Assuming the offical story is also the true one.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

Well, the actual press conference is part of the public record, so I think we all know how it went down. And I think we all know who did the "blaming."

Look, as far as I'm concerned, it's perfectly rational for them to have investigated whether the source had any relevance as they investigated the facts. They clearly fired Tony B. before the press conference, so they must have decided satisfactorily that the source wasn't truly the issue. Minaya's mistakes were (1) bringing it up anyhow, whether in the interest of full disclosure or bitterness; (2) doing it in his very clumsy language; and (3) not eating shit faster when he realized he had terribly embarrassed Rubin.

All pretty embarassing, but the main concern remains having good talented people in the most important positions. I don't think the Mets lost a lot of games because Minaya can't speak well during a press conference.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

I think we should explore other types of ownership and project how they might change the culture of the Mets before we go ahead and suggest any coup d'etats.

For instance, if GM were to buy the team maybe we could get cash for some of our clunkers.
- or if 'Match-dot-com' or one of those other on-line dating sites were the new owners then it might help the guys score ... or at least get to 2nd base.
- or maybe the Kohler faucets company, at least that way a bad season would be headed down a much nicer drain.

Here's an interesting quote from Jeff Wilpon, as reprinted in BA:

"It was something that slipped through the cracks. We had a lot of things happening last year. We came in under budget [on the overall construction of Citi Field], so why not make it right?"
—Mets owner Jeff Wilpon on fixing up the team's bullpen for next year. (Marty Noble, MLB.com)

Bullpen?
Only?
Or does he just answer direct questions?

You do realize that he's talking about fixing the physical layout of the bullpen(s) and not about altering the personnel, right?

Or if they were bought by 'National Airlines' maybe they'd overshoot their projected finish and win the division.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

What a stupid quote from J. Wilpon. In other words, if CF didn't come in "under budget", then they would not have fixed the mistake. All he had to do is say "we made a mistake and we're fixing it." He didn't have to reference the budget. Is it possible for a Mets representative to utter a single sentence without sounding stupid?

I don't know why one whould have to conclude that. It seems pretty innocuous.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

J. Wilpon qualified his comment by citing the budget. To say that they only fixed it because they had the money is admitting that they wouldn't have otherwise fixed the mistake. He didn't have to mention the budget at all. We don't care. We're glad they're fixing a mistake. What he should have been smart enough to say is "A) We screwed up B) We're fixing it."

Dave Checketts doesn't mention the budget.
Dave Checketts wouldn't screw up a bullpen.
Dave Checketts can get you into the Acela Club.
Dave Checketts isn't no spoiled kid.
Dave Checketts wouldn't really pull the strings.
Dave Checketts has full autonomy.

But he definitely didn't say that. i don't see how you get from "We came in under budget [on the overall construction of Citi Field], so why not make it right?" to "We're only fixing it because we have the money."

Clearly, money available in the budget makes it eaisier, and that's all he's saying.

Re: Ownership, Part Duex

Why would you be sorry?

You're clearly disposed for change. New third base coach, new manager, new GM, new owners. That's fine and easily defensible. But it doesn't make everything each of these guys do and say fit into that argument, and trying to force things to fit doesn't help.
