Re: Firearms

Shotgun and a 22. A number of my nif's have handguns, never made that leap, although I think about it every time I get to shoot one of 'em.

Re: Firearms

I've never even fired a gun. I'm not sure that I've ever even touched a real gun, loaded or unloaded.

Re: Firearms

Can barely imagine needing one, and even harder to imagine using one. Not about to come down strongly on folks who want to have one for sport or anything but obviously there are way too many guns getting into hands of people who shouldn't have 'em.

Re: Firearms

With a bunch of family as former military, I've held an arsenal's worth, but I hadn't fired one until earlier this year (see: my Facebook profile photo), at a range on my birthday. It was more fun than I expected.

Re: Firearms

My dad's a retired Nassau County police officer and my brother works in security, so I've been around guns. But, they scare the hell out of me. I've never touched one. Closest I've ever come is playing "Duck Hunt" on the original Nintendo.

Re: Firearms

The dad of one of my best pals growing up was once an NRA big wig in our state. If Red Dawn ever happens, I'm running to their farm house. I've fired off tons of stuff, don't own, though. Would love to fire off one of those tasers.

Re: Firearms

Don't own one and never have - mainly because I never saw a reason or need to do so. But I certainly don't want to restrict the right of the law-abiding to own them and could see doing so myself if my living conditions were different. Have never been a hunter and see no chance that I'd ever want to start. Have fired rifles (.22s) at target ranges, plus .22s and a larger rifle (.30 caliber I think) at makeshift targets at grandpa's farm, as well as shotguns at skeet ranges, but most of that was a long time ago. Never fired or even held a handgun as far as I can remember.

I grew up around guns. I was raised by my Mother, and she didn't have any lol, but all my friend's Fathers had guns. One of my friends had a gun rack in the living room with four unsecured rifles. A nightmare by today's standards, but we knew not to touch them and they stayed on the wall even through a number of teenage type keg parties. A friend of mine in the 70's also had a Dad who worked at West Point and we spent a bunch of time up there doing stuff that wouldn't fly today either with supervision or no supervision.

Re: Firearms

I don't own any handguns. I do own a Winchester 20 gauge pump shotgun (circa 1920's) that my father used for pheasant, turkey, and grouse hunting when he was growing up. He passed it on to me a few years ago. it hadn't been used for over 30 years so it took some time and work to clean it and get it working well. I have a 12 gauge pump Benelli shotgun for bird hunting and defense in the woods (as noted in a prior thread). I have a Browning .300 Winchester Magnum rifle for deer hunting. All of my guns stay locked away with the ammunition locked up in a seperate cabinet.

Re: Firearms

Don't own one. Shot one at a range once, and found it kind of cool. But I don't want to have one in the house.

So did gramps - a real nice cabinet (self-built I think) in the kitchen actually with two rifles and two shotguns up above and a drawer full of ammo below - and, IIRC, the bourbon down below that. Both gun door and ammo drawer were lockable but the key was right there all the time. Not sure that set-up would pass inspection today either. For the most part it was just him and grandma there in very rural central Virginia so it didn't really matter. But that's also where we used to go on our vacation most summers and no extra precautions were taken. But, like you, we knew enough not to go in there and only shot them under supervision. The guns were later stolen when someone broke into the place when they were away for a while and getting ready to sell. The cabinet wound up with one of my brothers; it's a real nice piece of work although he uses it for other things - apartments in White Plains containing 4 year-olds not being a great place for guns and all.

Not in my father's house. Not in my house. Many of my in-laws are hunters. My own blood relatives are Jews, so we had calculators instead of firearms.
