Election Day

I voted 12 votes

I didn't vote 6 votes

I live in New Jersey, so there's a real contest in my state today. I found it depressing. I voted for the guy (a) whom I would be OK with as governor and (b) who has a real chance of winning. The guy whom I would have preferred to vote for has no chance at all, so I felt that I needed to support my second choice in a close race.
Never hold your nose when you vote. If you support an outlier, vote for an outlier.[/quote:1msozt0i] I agree - at least most of the time. There are times where I'm so opposed to one choice that I'll vote the other 'Big' name just as an attempt to keep the guy out. In all, these off-year elections are going to be cited far too much as a sign of which way the trends are leaning. * Virginia - which has a non-succession law for the Governor so there's never an incumbent - sounds like it's going Republican but that's not really a huge deal. * The upstate NY congressional is more a battle within the Republican party than a sign that the country is starting to lean (or not) one way or the other * If the NJ race goes the the Republican it'll be a bigger story (having gone to Obama by like 20 points) but, even if so, it probably says more about Corzine's shortcomings than anything larger.

There's no Not yet voted choice. Put me in there. One of my niece's friends is running for town council, so I'll turn the lever for him (probably would have done so anyway cuz I like the other guys on his ticket).

I didn't vote yet - I've been running around at the various fundraisers that the cheerleaders are doing, but I'll be going out in a bit to take care of that.

Re: Election Day

I voted. There were some town posts that the ballot said you could "pick three". But there were only two candidates. I felt like writing in my own name, then chickened out. I don't know diddly about zoning. (I'm not sure about the two actual candidates.) Later

I combined fitness with my civic duty by jogging to my polling place and voting this morning. The volunteers at the polling place are always amused when I do that

Not much of consequence being voted on in North Carolina so I'm not heading to the polls this time.

Re: Election Day

We have a school finance thing on our district ballot today. I vote in every election I can, even if the candidates are running unopposed. Just think it's the right thing to do. That, and if my wife ever lets me run for something, I want some reporter to be able to pull out my voting record and not make a story out of it. But after my last stint on church council, my wife says I'm not allowed to run for anything. Ever. I do bring the kids to the polls with me and let my daughter fill out the ballot -- with direction. I used to love going to vote with my parents and they let me pull the levers in the machine. The optical scanners we have here just aren't as much fun.

The 'pail loves voting. We've had 3 in the past few months (primaries, runoffs, this) and he goes with both Wifey & me when we go. He recommends you vote for Rocko Bamma.

Nope. The only way I even realized it was election day was my daughter's dismay that the state store was closed. I guess it wasn't a big day around here.

Re: Election Day
Never hold your nose when you vote. If you support an outlier, vote for an outlier.[/quote:5gz09yoi] It wasn't an easy decision. I was too young to vote for John Anderson for president in 1980, so I never had to make this choice until now. Last week, I'd made up my mind to vote for Chris Daggett. I figured that even if he couldn't win, I'd at least be casting a symbolic vote against the two-party system. But in the end, I went with the Frayed Knot philosophy of voting against the candidate that I really disliked. And the NYT has just called the race for Chris Christie, anyway. Damn. Also voted in a special election for town council member. My vote went to some guy I occasionally see in the local gym. He's replacing a councilman who resigned in April after being indicted. I love Jersey.

Looking like Maine will vote to repeal their law which had allowed gay marriages. Is it sadder that matters of civil rights are left to ballot referendums, or that people are actually voting against the rights too?

Re: Election Day

The former. The tyranny of the majority is a reality, and we made a goverment designed to circumvent it on matters of civil rights. But suddenly nobody has the courage to use it.

Record low turnout....25% , a lot of political types as they do wondering what might have been if the Dems had pushed harder for Thompson and if Obama had given him a real endorsment , which of course didn't help Corzine.

The guy who won in Joisey looks like a Yankee fan - smug. If I lived there, I would have voted against him just for that. Later
