Berlin Wall

Today Berlin(and the world I guess) are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a "Festival of Freedom" in the city ....,1000 foam domino tiles over 8 feet tall will be stacked along the former route of the wall in the city center and toppled(wiki) I was 16 when it came down and am pretty sure I didn't fully understand or care what the ramifications were going to be.....1989 was a great time to be young though.

Each one of those dominoes appears to be a unique work of art. I wonder how much MeiGray will be selling them for?

Mostly what struck me at the time was that the idea of a wall-less Berlin went from something most couldn't imagine would be allowed to happen to something which was occurring before our very eyes on live TV was measured in days ... as in single-digit days. The concept that it actually might happen in the foreseeable future was just starting to seep in to my head when I came home late one night to find out that it was already in process.

I have a piece of the wall about the size of a giant hunk of birthday cake. A buddy of mine was living there when it came down and saved it for me. The outerhalf is all covered in graffiti like the wall to the right of Hoff's hands, and on the inside, you can make out where it looks like a steel support rod might've run behind this particular piece. It's one of the coolest things I own, I think. I don't have very much cool shit.

I have a piece of the Wall that looks like a piece of mortar approximately the size of my thumb. It came with a certificate of authenticity although that could be faked too.

Re: Berlin Wall

if the communist government knew they could get us to pay for thumb-sized pieces along with a piece of paper they'd have torn it down themselves years earlier

Re: Berlin Wall

They would have to be capitalists to think that way wouldn't they?

Communists had no problem acting as capitalists - they just did so selectively.

[quote="Willets Point":2bbqmxbi]They would have to be capitalists to think that way wouldn't they?[/quote:2bbqmxbi] communist leaders are generally perfectly happy to act like capitalists to line their own pockets, communism just means that the people [u:2bbqmxbi]not[/u:2bbqmxbi] in power have to "share"

I guess like all generations, 20 years go by and you look back at stuff like that and say, "wow, that was 20 years ago already?" That was some big shit, the world is a lot smaller than it was back then.
