Near unanimous. A Japanese writer cast a first-place vote for Miguel Cabrera.

Thank goodness Jeter didn't get it!

"A Japanese writer cast a first-place vote for Miguel Cabrera."

Say what?!?
Votes are by BWAA guys associated with each AL city. Is this a guy with a Japanese name or have they expanded their voting these days?

Anyway, here is the top 10.
Votes on MVP actually go to 10 placesbut it gets pretty trivial after a while.

Question:

Will any Mets get MVP votes? And if so, who will get the most, and how many points will he get?

My guess: Johan Santana will get a total of 3 points.

Re: Joe Mauer, your AL MVP

I'm betting none at all. Tough to make a case that anyone from this year's squad deserves to make the top-10 on anyone's list.

oe: double checking the AL list ... 4 teams failed to place at least one guy with votes (Balt, ChiW, Cleve, Oak)

Flushing shut out, methinks, as it should be.

Hell, the homer-contingent doesn't really exist here; Mets beat writers seemed to hate the team more than anyone by year's end, which makes sense, since their job was to cover this year's team.

In NL Cy Young voting, Keith Law of ESPN and Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus were among the voters. Some papers (like the Times) forbid its writers from voting on awards, not wanting them deciding, in essence, who gets bonuses and such. Newspapers continue to die out, with some cities not having two beat writers to offer for voting. Tyler Kepner explored how this may have helped Lincecum and Greineke win their hardware here.

“Five years ago, Lincecum wouldn’t have stood a chance in the voting,” Dave Cameron wrote at fangraphs.com, the site Bannister used to check Greinke’s WAR. “He might not have even stood a chance a year ago. But there are clearly members of the Writers Association who are not clinging to the analysis that they grew up with.”

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America assigns two writers per league city to vote on the major awards. As more newspapers — including The New York Times — forbid writers to vote, and some newspapers fold or eliminate daily baseball coverage, the pool of voters changes.

The vast majority of voters are still traditional newspaper writers. But two writers from Baseball Prospectus, a Web site specializing in sabermetric analysis, also voted for awards this season. So did Keith Law, a former Baseball Prospectus writer who now works for ESPN.com.

Re: Joe Mauer, your AL MVP

Sure, but Law & Carroll are BWAA guys (as of recently) and are part of specific chapters for voting purposes. Carroll, for instance, is located in Cincinatti and therefore would not be eligible to vote for an AL award under the two votes per league city distribution.
MGiM's statement implies that a foreign writer is the one who cast the 1st place vote for Cabrera and that didn't seem correct to me.

Re: Joe Mauer, your AL MVP

Cabrera's first-place vote came from Keizo Konishi of Kyodo News, a member of the Seattle chapter. That's a Japanese news organization, and Kyodo News on the Web shows it covers Japanese news for local and international audience. My guess that they have a Seattle chapter to cover Ichiro and the other Asian players/manager on the Mariners.

You surmise correctly, MGiM.

Is anyone else kinda curious to see what the rest of his ballot looked like?
