Jack Cust, Jose Guillen, Ben Sheets

These are the latest names coming out of the rumor mill as Mets targets.

Sheets:

[quote="New York Post"] "A major-league source confirmed that Sheets, 31, would be among a group of second-tier, relatively low-cost starting pitchers the Mets will consider this offseason while continuing their pursuit of top free-agent starter John Lackey."

Guillen:

[quote="Adam Rubin"]The Mets have a backup option if the Matt Holliday and Jason Bay bidding gets out of hand. The Royals, who are looking to deal outfielder Jose Guillen, identified the Mets as a potential trading partner, although there was no deal considered close, sources said.

Guillen, 33, was limited to 81 games last season with Kansas City because of right leg injuries, including with a ligament tear in the knee and hamstring discomfort. He hit .242 with nine homers and 40 RBI in 281 at-bats.

The Royals want to acquire an inexpensive outfielder in return for Guillen, and are impressed with Angel Pagan despite his shortcomings. They'd be willing to eat money in a swap: Guillen is owed $12 million in 2010, the final season of a three-year, $36 million deal. One impediment would be the salary Kansas City would be willing to kick in probably isn't enough for the Mets to acquire Guillen in what sources say may be a frugal offseason - especially if Guillen is no longer a full-time player.

Cust:

[quote="Adam Rubin, again"]Oakland slugger Jack Cust (left) is expected to be traded before Dec. 12, and the Mets are one team believed to have considered his acquisition.

Cust, 30, who hails from Flemington, N.J., hit .240 with 25 homers and 70 RBI in 513 at-bats last season. He earned $2.8 million and should be dealt before the nontender deadline in less than three weeks, since Oakland does not want to pay the salary Cust would be awarded in arbitration, which may be in the $4-5 million range.

The cost of acquiring Cust, who has played 215 games in the outfield and 234 games at DH in his career, should be low — perhaps a Single-A prospect. Seattle may be the most likely destination, which would reunite Cust with Don Wakamatsu, the Mariners’ manager, who previously worked as Oakland’s bench coach.

I think I would rather keep Pagan that put him in a trade for Jose Guillen, and I'm not hot on Cust but he'd be cheap .

I guess I like Sheets as much as any in the field.

Pagan on the up may be comparable to Guillen on the down low, but it's not like his injury issues aren't a concern also. Dude recovers slowly.

Re: Jack Cust, Jose Guillen, Ben Sheets

1. Don't we have enough talented-but-fragile starters?
2. No thanks.
3. There's no DH in this league. Do you really want to try to hide an awful OF glove in Citi's huge grass?

Ben Sheets could be okay if he comes cheaply. He had great stuff when he could remain healthy. As long as he isn't the only move to add depth to the rotation, then I wouldn't be opposed to looking at him.

Not big on trading for Guillen. Cust's best position is DH, I don't see him as a logical fit for any of the Mets pressing needs. There has to be a better use of the teams resources than to acquire Cust in a trade.

Nominated!
If only for the terrifying mental picture of Cust (trying to play) in the outfield.

Re: Jack Cust, Jose Guillen, Ben Sheets

Jose Guillen hasn't had a better OPS than the .837 that Pagan posted last year since 2004. Cust has hit better than that, but not by nearly enough to make up for the difference in defense. If you want an outfielder, get somebody better than what we've already got.
