I went for The Sign Man and Gooden. I will vote for Darling in future years, but I think I'll feel better about voting for him after he has a few more years of Mets announcing.

I can't believe that Karl Ehrhardt has gotten more votes than Al Jackson or Tim McCarver. He was colorful, but not that colorful. My #4 vote was between those two, and I went for little Al.

As much as I relish voting for Doc, I can't stand voting for Franco, but I do it anyway because there's too much of him to ignore. Karl Ehrhardt and Dave Kingman carry the rest of the day. The Tim McCarver of the Mets '80s got strong consideration and wasn't necessarily negated by the later, irritating Tim McCarver. It's just that Kingman was so much the symbol of what little Met power there was for so long.

I have to say that, though I have him clicked above, I'm a little shy about Gooden. Though he and Strawberry are always one relapse from disaster and embarassment, his recent profile suggests to me that he's concerningly a little further off the straight and narrow than Strawberry. I need to weigh that more closely as we approach the final round. The other point of view on how to deal with such concerns is to get him in now while he's allegedly straight. Considering the legacy of his numbers alone, it's, of course, a no-brainer. I think we serve him and us best with full reconcilation being used as a carrot to draw him as far as possible into recovery and personal and legal restoration.

One could come up with a few Mets within years of each other that were more of a waste of talent starting with Gooden, Strawberry, and Jefferies.
