Projected 2010 roster

This got discontinued when HTML got discontinued. Now I'm trying to lay it out in a BBCode table. Please be patient with the layout. Obviously, a lot of this could break several ways. There seem to be one spot open in the rotation, three in the pen, one or two in the outfield, and one going to an infielder or a catcher, currently held down (this week) by Anderson Hernandez. Misch and Figgy are ahead of Stokes and others by virtue of throwing unlikely shutouts the last week of the season. Oh, and being healthy. That helps. It was a one-year deal, but he's still listed on the roster, so I don't know what his cake is. I guess if we boot him, that makes next in line for the fifth starter Figgy-Stokes-Niese-Nieve? Nieve was pitching like a prince when he went down, but his injury seemed serious enough that I don't expect he'll be in any rotation without first seeing some rehab time, and I probably shouldn't have put him ahead of the line for a bullpen spot either.

less then 6 years service time so he was only a free agent as he was non-tendered, presume that means it's up to use whether or not we want to tender him a contract

Maybe Stokes or Figgy is ahead of the line but Niese is probably the one they want to step up and take the final pitching slot, and they've never shown any shyness about squeezing those guys through waivers if they have to. The double non-tender of Reed and Sullivan open up a roster slot for Chris Carter. In actuality, right now, he's probaly fighting with Nick Evans for it. But new is hot. New is exciting. I'm giving the new guy the edge. Least until we get Bay or somesuch. OK, this is what I've got while the signings of Bay and Molina are still unofficial. Figueroa, Stokes, and Hernandez are out of options, so the Mets have an incentive to keep them coming out of camp if they can, though it's not like Figueroa hasn't snuck through waivers more than once (to his wife's everloving joy). They probably will have bumped out Figgy and Stokes by the end of camp, but this is where it stands. Well, it looks like this thing is really going to happen. I'm looking at it for now as him displacing Martinez on the roster -- rather than Carter --- as (1) Fernando's skills are more redundant with Pagan's, (2) Fernando has more option years left, (3) Fernando is younger, and (4) Fernando, as always, needs reps. In truth, it says "options" because, should he be added to thr 40-man roster, the team would have options to bounce him between Buffalo and Gotham.

He's not a power guy, but I'd rather see Jesus Feliciano than GMJ. It's weird how some guys seem to have decent seasons and just never get the call. I mentioned Feliciano last summer I believe, when we were full of injuries and he and Sullivan were doing well in the minors. He had an excellent WBC (I even saw him there), for what that limited sample size is worth, but he's not completely useless and while I'm not sure if he can play a good CF or not, could he do worse than GMJ?

Based upon the roster above, there will be 5 brand new faces from 09. Since 09 stunk, you would think that we'd see a major overhaul, but no. The only 5 new players are: Igarashi, Blanco, Bay, Carter, GMJ. With Tatis returning, he'll take probably take Carter's spot so that gives us only 4 new players from an awful team. (I know that management would say that we saw the inventory last year because of all the injuries which results in fewer players that are new to us but, to me, it's still surprising and distressing only to see 4 or 5 new players.)

I'm certain he could. It's a question of likelihood. I'd like to see him too, but the problem with guys like him is that the pallette of useful skills that they have are are so limited, that they aren't useful if they aren't clicking on all cylanders. Some guys, like Matthews, if they're not excelling at what they're good at, well (one can reason) at least they're mediocre at other things. Other guys are like Jeff Duncan. I'd like to have taken a look at Jesus Feliciano in September to see if he can get on base and cover the gaps better (at least) than Jeromy Reed. But there's probably reason enough to think maybe not.

One possible reason that nobody has given Feliciano a shot is that he has never hit more than 4 HR in any minor league season. I noticed that he also pitched a few games early in his career. I don't know if his arm was that strong or the reason he never pitched more is that he hurt his arm. If so, that would be another reason why he hasn't made the majors - it would make him a LF/PH only. And that's where his lack of power has held him back. Anyhow, I would have liked to have seen him get a shot, too. Later

It's time when perfomances are starting to have consequences. Nieve and Figgy both were favorites to open on the major league roster, but Figgy's eight majestic scoreless innings (to say nothing of his winter season) seems to put him in an advantageous position regarding the rotation, so I'm parking him there for now. Hey everybody, this guy has been in camp the whole time, yet we never saw him. Journeyman catcher named Luke Montz. If he sticks, it'll probably be at Bingo. He struggled last year but was good in 2008.
