Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I know it's a day early, but many of us may be too busy tomorrow to check in here. So Happy Thanksgiving! This is, easily, my favorite holiday. I love the subtlety of it. It's uniquely American (although I know Canada has a Thanksgiving, and perhaps other nations do too) but not overtly patriotic. It can be spiritual, for those so inclined, but it's not overtly religious. (I always loved, as a kid, that it was a major holiday that wasn't marred by the obligation of going to church.) It hasn't been switched, like many other holidays, to the nearest Monday. Keeping it on Thursday gets most of us a four-day weekend. It's filled with tradition: food, family, parades, football, etc. I don't watch the football, and I haven't watched the parade since the Mets had a championship float in November 1986, but I do have my own tradition, which I now enjoy sharing with my kids. It's one I've mentioned here every year: I pull out the DVD of the classic 1933 version of KING KONG and recreate the WOR Channel 9 tradition. And I'm not alone in associating King Kong with Thanksgiving: http://www.dvddrive-in.com/holidayfilmfest.htm (I'm surprised that the Channel 9 thing didn't start until 1976, when I was 13. I thought I was watching Kong on Thanksgiving at a much younger age.) Anyway, whatever your family's traditions are, I hope you all have an enjoyable day, and lots to be thankful for.

Yes, happy one to all. Its the one day that MMYF lets me into the kitchen, cooking the turkey and dressing is my job. She bakes the sweet potato pie. The kids will be bringing the other sides. Its also my oldest daughter's birthday (actually it was yesterday) so we will top off the carb-out day with cocoanut frosted cake (her fave). Then, I help with the cleanup. That prevents me from watching much tv. And yes, I thought King Kong was televised earlier than that - back to the days of "Million Dollar Movie". BTW- one foodie on tv said a good wine to have with the meal is champagne, or another sparkling wine, because the bubbles help to relieve the stuffed feeling (semi-pun intended) from all the eating. Anyone have experience serving that? Later

Wishes for a blessed day to everyone here in the Pool. As some of you may remember, this was a bit of a difficult summer for me. But I have much, much to be thankful for as this holiday rolls around, particularly my wife's health. I remember all the support I got here during those dark days, and am thankful for the great forum we have.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving to all!

in six years of marriage, this will be our first year not hosting thanksgiving. with mrs.mm 8 1/2 months pregnant, preparing a house and meal for our family just wasn't going to happen. its too bad, too, cos we make an awseome thanksgiving feast! the task has been handed to her mom, who lives an hour away - which is about as far as we're willing to travel now, too. i'm definitely looking forward to the stuffing, the sweet potatoes, and the pumpkin pie, of which my wife makes an awesome one!

In the middle of road tripping to Cleveland to visit my brother and his family, whom I hardly ever get to see because, well, they're in Cleveland. I'm too busy to take today off from work completely, so I got on the road this morning, drove west for three hours, and have set up an office in a classroom on my old college campus in central Pennsylvania. I'll work for a few more hours, get in the car, stop at a Wal-Mart somewhere to get some gifts for the niece and nephew, find some motel along I-80 to spend the night, and get to my brother's in time for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow at noon. No King Kong. No parades. Maybe some Guitar Hero or chess with my niece during the weekend. Probably some random belated birthday celebrations because I missed the kids' birthdays in September. Damn, I love Thanksgiving. Happy holiday, 'pool.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I love it, and I like it when we get to host, as we're doing this year, though on a slightly smaller scale. My family seemed to be the host house when I was growing up, and I like inheriting that role. I make much of the meal. And as good as the turkey is, nothing --and I mean nothing -- beats the next day's turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberry sauce on it! I go lunch and dinner with those until I run out, usually early in the next week. We don't have a ton of traditions, other than I must watch at least a portion of the parade on television. When we lived on the other side of the state we went to see the Lions for a couple of years. I tried the White Castle stuffing one year. Won't be doing that again.

I've especially enjoyed your Facebook updates in that vein the last few weeks. (But that might just be impending fatherhood turning me into a p*ssy.) Thanks for the support, laughs, advice, recommendations, and pleasantly-distracting argumentatin', guys... and for a supportive virtual bond that stretches just a bit past LGM.

[/quote:3rhpdlfk] Awww - Thanks LWFS :) A classmate of mine posted the idea of giving thanks for something every day between Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, and I thought it was a nice exercise so I joined in. I'm glad you've enjoyed it.

Anyone still hungry can prolly hit us up for leftovers. We got a huge turkey and an unexpectedly small gathering due to a few cancellations.

By the way, won't somebody have pity on me? I'm on Long Island, and my family has turned the insane knobs all up to 11.
