Black Friday

Do any of y'all take part in the madness, or are you above the fray? Any good black friday stories out there, like that one time you had to punch a little girl in the face to make her let go of the very last tickle-me elmo, and it got all bloody, but you still gave it to your kid anyways even though it totally creeped him out? Also, are there any good deals out there that i should be thinking about busting down a door for? with my speed, size and racing experience, it could get fun!

Re: Black Friday

I'll not be taking part, there have been plenty of good sales all this week in most stores. I took my Mom out shipping a few times and the sales were good , 50-60% off in places like JC Penneys. Cyber monday is coming and this year most places will ship for free.........they have names for everything.....the other night on the News that announced that today was White Wednesday.....

Re: Black Friday

No, I've never done the Black Friday thing. I've managed to simplify Christmas a whole lot. I only buy for my parents, my two nieces, my nephew, and my kids, and my wife takes care of most of the shopping for our kids, but I do help out. My parents are the only adults I buy Christmas gifts for, because they refuse to stop buying me gifts. But with all other grownups in my life, I've been able to come to a mutual no-gift agreement.

Re: Black Friday

It's not that I'm above the fray; it's more that I'm frightened of it. There will be other sales in the coming weeks, including Cyber Monday. I'd rather shop another time than deal with the parking lots on Black Friday (which shouldn't surprise any of you who are familiar with the fact that I'm somewhat driving-phobic)

Re: Black Friday

No way. I will shop online on Friday but there's no chance that I set foot in a mall or retail store of any kind that day. I did it once, several years ago, at Best Buy to get a deal on my XM radio. Took me 2 minutes to find it in the store and 90 minutes to get to a register. Thanks anyway.

Re: Black Friday

I know some women who shop with their moms/sisters/friends on Black Friday. I can see doing it as a social event. But on my own, I'd rather pay more money next week than deal with the madhouse at the mall.

I pass. I think there's a lot of baiting and switching going on.

Oh, HELL naw. Black Fridays are for leftovers and hangovers. (Thank Jebus LWBH feels the same way.)

I have never, to the best of my knowledge, joined the shopping madness that is "Black Friday" and I don't intend to start now. Actually, I'll be seeing patients on Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally a busy day at our office.

Swan2H - "A lot of wishbone-in-the-eye incidents?" Thankfully, no. A lot of college students getting checked and getting contact lenses while they're home for the holidays. Historically, Christmas is the big holiday for eye injuries. For whatever reason, we see a surprising number of patients that have been poked in the eye by a finger or a branch from the Christmas tree. I once had a run of 5 straight Christmas mornings that I had to go in to the office for at least one injury. I haven't had to go in for the past 3 years, but I probably jinxed myself with that statement.

I go out on midnight Friday night to join the insane rush to get an eye exam. Seriously, I'm heading home to LI Thanksgiving for the first time in years. Anything going down on Friday night, e-mail me at edgydc at the yahoo. Oh, wait, you all have kids now. Forget it.

Re: Black Friday

Figuring that a Black Friday rush in northeastern Ohio would be no worse than an ordinary weekend back in Jersey, I went with my sister-in-law and a friend of hers to a suburban Cleveland Toys-R-Us at midnight. A mere 2 1/2 hours later, we escaped with a Hot Wheels Screamin' Projection Clock Radio, a pair of Elmo hands, a Nerf basketball game, a jigsaw puzzle, a camera, a PlayDoh Coco-Nutty Monkey, and sundry and various other crap for my brother's kids. And kept our sanity. But just barely. I'm never doing this again. Never ever. Never, I tell you. My niece and nephew had better appreciate Uncle Mendoza.

What? We can break out the Wii after the kids go to bed. It's all good. No shopping for us today. Like BG, we've reached the point of no gifts with the other adults except for a small name exchange that we do with my dad's family. Easy, fun, and everyone gets one thing to open that night. It is, sadly, at least on one side, a contest to see whose kids can get the most stuff. We don't play that game, but we're happy to let my dad try to play his hand.

Re: Black Friday

After decrying the whole Black Friday thing, I saw a Walmart ad with something I really, really wanted to get for my daughter for Christmas at a really good price and decided to brave the hordes. I've never seen anything like it. There wasn't a spot in the parking lot at 4:45 am, and cars were still streaming in. We parked in the Menards lot and climbed a hill. While Menards and Best Buy had lines wrapping around the building or parking lot, Walmart allowed people in the store, but weren't checking out people until 5 a.m. Most of the big door-busters were on pallets in the main aisles, with items wrapped in clear wrap. First we had trouble finding the item, then found an employee unwrapping and there we were. Grabbed the box and got in a checkout line -- which grew rapidly behind me. Some random acts of kindness. I had one item and a heavy box. A mom ahead of me with two overflowing carts let me go ahead of her. We were out the door by about 5:20 and back in bed my 6 -- would have been sooner but my son wanted to try the brand-new Sonic Burger. There was some strange behavior -- two goofballs in the electronics section were about the exchange blows over a spot in line -- and the store was absolutely packed. So after mocking the practice all these years, I had a good experience.
