Not that I know much about this stuff - but I figure it's a tough draw for Cote d'Ivoire in Group G and welcome back to the World Cup North Korea. At least the N.K. team members will get fed while they're traveling - which isn't necessarily the case at home.
Plus the Portugese and Brazilians can yell at each other during group play and be understood.

Same with Group H - where three countries speak the same language, except for the Swiss who speak three languages but none of them Spanish

I guess Mexico gets the easiest "top" squad in S.A. but maybe the toughest "other" qualifier in France

USA has nothing to fear here either, under Capello England are better, more organized but are still suspect at the back....Rio Ferdinand is having a terrible season and is currently out with a long term nagging injury....John Terry is overrated .......USA USA USA...

I think both teams will go through but the problem is the runner-up would likely face Germany and the winner of group D.......

The part of me that cares less if the US gets through was kinda hoping France got tossed into Group C. France-Algeria might have been a bit incendiary.

And I'd go "G" as the closest thing to a Group of Death (3/4 of it, anyway), with Group B trickier than it looks. It's a bit tougher to have loaded groups with Euro qualifying so wacky this year (with teams like Slovenia and Slovakia edging out stronger squads like Russia, Croatia and Ukraine and traditional powers like Ireland and the Czechs).

British star Michael Owen to miss the 2010 WC with a hamstring injury that will require surgery (yes, that happens to other people beside NY Mets).

Re: World Cup Draw

Not a big deal FK, it would have been a huge deal in Euros 2000/04 and 2002/06 World Cups. The truth is that Owen would have struggled to make the squad this WC and him being out probably saves Capello the hassle of not picking him. Owen is nothing more than a bench player for Man United, although in most other teams he would be a starter, Ferguson likes to use him as an "impact sub", not what he envisioned when he signed there, his pace which is what help separate him and make him a special player is not there anymore. Plus the type of game he played in his prime is not what is played nowadays. When teams played a 4-4-2 the big man up front would win the ball and Owen would feed off that , he was deadly inside the box. These days many teams play a 4-5-1 where the lone front player is a bull like Wayne Rooney who can do it all.

I doubt Owen would have made the squad .

It's suspect right now, they have no left back, Ferdinand has gotten old real quick and Terry problems or.n ot has been mostly not that good this season. Goalie David James is near 40......listen I root for them to lose so if they go 0 and 3 and then out great.

Well , the Netherlands is a bonafide soccer power...perhaps not what they used to be but they can be great. Denmark has had some great players and were Euro Champions in 1992....but forget that.....read this brilliant account of the great mid-eighties team. Plus they had without doubt the best soccer jerseys ever.

Re: World Cup Draw

I'd say his England career is over but as JCL suggests he could be back in a year. I don'r know his contract status with LA but it must be close to being up. I feel bad for the guy in a way, it's easy to mock him for his image and his wife but when a lot of his peers stopped playing for their countries when they hit 30 he didn't , when he moved to LA we all thought that was it for his England career but he proved otherwise. A last WC would have been nice for him but for the team itself it's not a significant loss, Aaron Lennon having a setback in his recovery is a bigger issue for Capello.

Re: World Cup Draw

Well, he was working hard to get into form, and nobody makes a World Cup roster just as a marketable name. Not for England.

If this is a "disaster" for the organizers, it's maybe because viewership in the US --- where non-immigrant God-fearin' TV watching 'Mericans can't name too many players besides "that guy the movie was about" ---- might go down. But the rest of the world don't need no Beckham. Except maybe as somebody to hate on.

Re: World Cup Draw

I wouldn't say it was a big surprise for a few reasons...Barca had to take the train from Barcelona(duh) to Milan, Inter Milan have been building the past several seasons for the Champions League after dominating the Italian League ......José Mourinho is a brilliant coach and a master tactician and whose sole mandate is to win the CL.

Barcelona can turn the tie around but I don't think they will , few coaches impact a game like José Mourinho, plus the Barca captain is out having been booked in the first game.

Most notably, the group is without Charlie Davies, the promising striker/Team USA vet (17 caps at age 23) attempting to make a go at the Cup squad after making a nigh-miraculous recovery from a nigh-fatal car crash last November.

Reading up a bit on the upcoming Cup, an SI article talked about how Brazil is undergoing a bit of a transformation - in attitude at least - from caring more about how their soccer looks to just caring how and if it'll help them win. As such, creative though more erratic (and less serious at times) players like Ronaldinho are out as "samba soccer" takes on a more European style grit.

It's one reason why the public there are skeptical about the coach Dunga....as a player he was an uncompromising defensive midfielder...an organizer.....a coach's dream really....he stresses that above the samba stuff.....one thing about Brazil this year....they have arguably the best goalie in the world , Júlio César , and will carry with them a brilliant backup, Gomes fro Spurs. Brazil used to never really be known for their goalies.

Yes, that was definitely part of the thrust of the piece [heh, heh ... he said 'thrust']
The article was framed partly through the eyes of one an older Brazilian who's one of their most rabid fans and how he (and, by extension, the "old guard") care more about seeing the "beautiful game" than about result but how that view isn't as universal anymore particularly as Brazil seeks - with their growing economy and upcoming Olympics - to become more of a major player on the world stage beyond just in soccer.

The roster:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England)

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany), Jay DeMerit (Watford, England), Clarence Goodson (IK Start, Norway), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan, Italy), Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England)

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany), Clint Dempsey (Fulham, England), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles), Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus, Denmark), Stuart Holden (Bolton, England), Jose Torres (Pachuca, Mexico)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Hull, England), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles), [crossout]Brian Ching (Houston[/crossout]), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Pachuca, Mexico).

Kicked in the Laser-Welded Balls:

Defenders: Chad Marshall and Heath Pearce
Midfielders: Alejandro Bedoya, Sacha Kljestan and Robbie Rogers
Forwards: Brian Ching and Eddie Johnson

Findley and Buddle over, say, Brian Ching (superconsistent in both MLS and for the national team, with nice passing and vision) is a REAL surprise. Apparently, Bornstein and Cherundolo looked like crap yesterday and have been iffy in general of late... but Pearce and Marshall looked worse.

Funny that you say "big" star. Size-- and lack thereof-- has been maybe the biggest issue holding him back from progressing (he's not fantastic without the ball, either). He's 5'8"/150, which is respectable enough, but not big, and it took him a while to get there. He's still only 20, though, so there's time yet...

Re: World Cup Draw

Players bitch about the World Cup ball. In other news, the South African sun rose in the east today, and is anticipated to set in the west.

Re: World Cup Draw

Things I didn't know about South Africa
- Johannesburg is nearly 500 feet (or about 9%) higher in elevation than Denver, Colorado. Several of the other cities hosting games are high also, 4,000 ft and above
- how to spell Johannesburg (I looked it up after starting this post)
