Not that I know much about this stuff - but I figure it's a tough draw for Cote d'Ivoire in Group G and welcome back to the World Cup North Korea. At least the N.K. team members will get fed while they're traveling - which isn't necessarily the case at home.

USA has nothing to fear here either, under Capello England are better, more organized but are still suspect at the back....Rio Ferdinand is having a terrible season and is currently out with a long term nagging injury....John Terry is overrated .......USA USA USA...

British star Michael Owen to miss the 2010 WC with a hamstring injury that will require surgery (yes, that happens to other people beside NY Mets).

metirish Mar 05 2010 04:49 PM Re: World Cup Draw |
Not a big deal FK, it would have been a huge deal in Euros 2000/04 and 2002/06 World Cups. The truth is that Owen would have struggled to make the squad this WC and him being out probably saves Capello the hassle of not picking him. Owen is nothing more than a bench player for Man United, although in most other teams he would be a starter, Ferguson likes to use him as an "impact sub", not what he envisioned when he signed there, his pace which is what help separate him and make him a special player is not there anymore. Plus the type of game he played in his prime is not what is played nowadays. When teams played a 4-4-2 the big man up front would win the ball and Owen would feed off that , he was deadly inside the box. These days many teams play a 4-5-1 where the lone front player is a bull like Wayne Rooney who can do it all.

A re-shuffle would be nice , although I know you are fond of Côte d'Ivoire. I think we have a few new members that were not around last time that would be into this.

He might lose a half-step, but he could be back in a year, if he wants.
|
metirish Mar 15 2010 08:10 AM Re: World Cup Draw |
I'd say his England career is over but as JCL suggests he could be back in a year. I don'r know his contract status with LA but it must be close to being up. I feel bad for the guy in a way, it's easy to mock him for his image and his wife but when a lot of his peers stopped playing for their countries when they hit 30 he didn't , when he moved to LA we all thought that was it for his England career but he proved otherwise. A last WC would have been nice for him but for the team itself it's not a significant loss, Aaron Lennon having a setback in his recovery is a bigger issue for Capello.

Edgy DC Mar 15 2010 08:22 AM Re: World Cup Draw |
Well, he was working hard to get into form, and nobody makes a World Cup roster just as a marketable name. Not for England.

I wouldn't say it was a big surprise for a few reasons...Barca had to take the train from Barcelona(duh) to Milan, Inter Milan have been building the past several seasons for the Champions League after dominating the Italian League ......José Mourinho is a brilliant coach and a master tactician and whose sole mandate is to win the CL.

Dumber move by South African national police commissioner Bhaki Cele: accidentally getting the American press on his ass by wishing vocally that the USA gets eliminated early (due to the security challenge posed by a potential Obama visit), or essentially admitting that his country's security resources are basically stretched to their thinnest and can't readily handle any additional strain?

Today, Bob Bradley named his provisional roster, the 30-man group from which he'll select the final 23-player team following training camp. Most notably, the group is without Charlie Davies, the promising striker/Team USA vet (17 caps at age 23) attempting to make a go at the Cup squad after making a nigh-miraculous recovery from a nigh-fatal car crash last November.

Reading up a bit on the upcoming Cup, an SI article talked about how Brazil is undergoing a bit of a transformation - in attitude at least - from caring more about how their soccer looks to just caring how and if it'll help them win. As such, creative though more erratic (and less serious at times) players like Ronaldinho are out as "samba soccer" takes on a more European style grit.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 24 2010 09:42 PM Re: World Cup Draw |
Speaking of missing 'Dinhos... though you won't see him on an international pitch in June, you'll see him in the ads. Namely, in this one-- along with a host of others, including Rooney, Drogba, Ribery, Fabio Cannavaro, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yes, that was definitely part of the thrust of the piece [heh, heh ... he said 'thrust'] The article was framed partly through the eyes of one an older Brazilian who's one of their most rabid fans and how he (and, by extension, the "old guard") care more about seeing the "beautiful game" than about result but how that view isn't as universal anymore particularly as Brazil seeks - with their growing economy and upcoming Olympics - to become more of a major player on the world stage beyond just in soccer.
