As in the other poll, there are no easy choices. We've whittled our list of 64 down to 16 names. In asking you to vote for four of these eight, I'm in no way saying that you are declaring the next four "unworthy," only that you see the four you pick as higher priorities to consider for 2010.

I sorted this by seed, but interesting how so many of these 1986 affiliates ended up in this group.

Cashen, Darryl, Doc, and Bobby V.

I don't think Leiter belongs, and Matlack is a fringe candidate. HoJo is also kind of fringey, and Darling can wait; give him time to bolster his credentials by extending his broadcasting tenure.

Cashen, like Jane Jarvis, is getting on in years. (To say the least.) Darryl and Doc are currently in good graces with the Mets, that may not continue to be the case. I kind of wavered on Bobby Valentine because there's that slim chance that his Mets history may not yet be complete.

I went for HoJo over Bobby V. I surprised myself, but there you have it.

I went for Darling, Gooden, Strawberry and Valentine.

I read the options too fast and should have included Cashen instead of Darling. My bad.

Me too, but I wouldn't complain if Bobby V went in. A worthy candidate.

Re: Mets Hall of Fame: Stengel Group

If the HOF has proceeded apace after '97 when Keith was inducted, HoJo would have been in earlier this decade, maybe even while Bobby V was still managing. Yet I couldn't pass over Bobby now, so one more year for HoJo to wait. He can chill with Fonzie.

Doc, Darryl and Cashen were the others.

Al, it isn't philanthropy when you have to be pictured and have all know you put up some money for your deeds

I'd rather see you give 10 bucks to a drunk in the park

Oh, and I voted for Darling. I can be convinced this was a wrong choice, but he was my first favorite player. And he ain't a terrible broadcaster, either.

I left Doc off, which is probably crazy. Of course he should go in, but not next. Let him do a little more penance.

Re: Mets Hall of Fame: Stengel Group

Leaving aside the fact that he may have had the greatest pitching season in Met history, Seaver INCLUDED (and one of the top 5 or so pitching seasons in baseball history), 300-plus starts over 10.5 years of service-- getting Cy Young votes in 5 of them-- is hardly a flash in the pan.

To the extent that he was a flash in the pan, he was a thermonuclear flash.

Re: Mets Hall of Fame: Stengel Group

To the extent that he isn't, he's second all-time in wins and striekouts; third in innings, complete games, and starts; fourth in starts.

Mike Vail was a flash in the pan.

Doc Gooden was a Rookie of the Year, a Cy Young, and a key part of a World Championship and an additional division title.

Re: Mets Hall of Fame: Stengel Group

Four-time All-Star, too.

Here's what came after his flashy '84 and '85:

17-6
15-7
18-9
9-4
19-7
13-7
10-13
12-15
3-4

Even if he was never quite Doc the way we choose to remember him, Dwight was pretty darn good for an awfully long time.
