A Putz in White Sox (Memories of J.J.)

J.J. goes to Chicago's South Side. One year, $3M, another $3.25M in incentives.

My wife observed of the scoreboard lightning theatrics when he entered a game, "He can make the weather change."

See ya later, Fatso. And thanks for nothing.

Dumbest trade ever.

An abiding memory is him not being all that thrilled about coming here.

He leaves the Mets on the one-year anniversary of the date that the Mets acquired him.

Have any other Mets who have come and gone on the same date?

Charles Johnson, technically.

7 hitless/scoreless outings out of 29... and 6 with multiple walks.

I remember being excited when he came in. Upon seeing a picture of him-- and the magnificent ginger goatee-- I remember thinking that he should have been on the Phillies at some point in his career.

I remember seeing him strike out 2 guys once, against the Pirates. I wasn't thunderstruck or anything, but hey-- credit where credit is due.

It was classic when he came up with the " finding it hard to get up for the 8th inning" as an excuse for sucking.

I'll take wild exaggerations for $200 Alex.
That the centerpiece of the deal didn't work out well doesn't speak well for the trade, but it's not like I'm dying to get back anyone we sent away and we've still got Sean Green to show for it (maybe that's a good thing and maybe not).

I seem to remember Putz getting a save in a close game where each of the three outs was hard hit or required a spectacular defensive play.

Anyone else remember that? I may be fuzzy on the details, and I don't remember who the opponent was. (And it may even have been a "hold" and not a "save.")

That was the Omir Santos game.

Well, yes, but...

It was dumb in how unnecessary and reactive it all was, once the idea of having created this impenetrable bullpen was exposed for the smoke up our asses it was, and all because Putz got hurt, and maybe had been at the time of the deal.

So we took on a fat ineffective reliever for $10 million, plus a 5th outfielder that never got any PT despite the entire team dropping dead around him, and an erratic but ultimately OK set up man who was more or less no special-er than Aaron Heilman.

Seattle got Heilman, who they parlayed for Ronny Cedeno, who went in that Pittsburgh deal for Snell and Jack Wilson. That's winning the deal right there! But they also got ND Chavez, a power hitting 1B prospect we sure could have used in Carp, a 5th starter type who didn't suck too badly in jason Vargas, two pitching prospects. And we sent away Bazooka Joe Smith, not that he was destined to have a good year.

SEE MY VEST! SEE MY VEST! SEE MY VEEEEEEST!

In short, Zduriencik knew what he was doing-- building something (as opposed to Omar, whose big returns in the deal were wallpaper-- Putz and Reed were selected for what they represented, not what they were). Add him to the list of guys I don't want Omar playing with anymore.

Re: A Putz in White Sox (Memories of J.J.)

Did his job on Opening Day, giving up only a bases-empty walk in the eighth with a 2-1 lead. Frankie got the save, but I remember some "I have nothing else to write about" columnist the next day making a big deal that Putz had tougher hitters than Rodriguez, so...I don't remember the point, other than the columnist had nothing else to write about.

Saw exactly one dude at Citi Field wearing a PUTZ 20 shirt. Man, I thought, he must really like him. Or be related.

Maybe the guy's name was Schmuck or something, so wearing PUTZ on his back didn't see all that bad.

Is it me, or is the market for relievers this year hyper-inflated?

A rarer specimen than the numerically correct PUTZ 22 jersey! I know a dude with that one myself.

I'm thinking I mistakenly deducted 2 from PUTZ 20 when I offered that Memories of J.J. Putz. Putz him down for PUTZ 22.

Jim Kern lasted two months between coming over for Flynn and going out for Foster.

How many minutes on the Rule 5 guy again?
