Gomes could be a good platoon option in left if the bigger names exceed our price range. Alfredo Amezaga was also non-tendered by the Marlins. Before the injury he was a plus fielder pretty much anywhere you could put him, and if he's healthy that would give him value.

My first instinct when seeing Scott Olsen on this list: Ooh, that guy's a reported jerk that might be undervalued because of clubhouse stuff and might be worth picking up. The I looked at his numbers. Man, was my first instinct waaay off.

i'd be real tempted to toss some money wang's way. atkins intrigues me greatly. he could be a nice bargain pickup for a team, perhaps. or he could play like crap like he did this year - who knows... does he make any sort of murphy-platoony sense?

I wanna say yes to Atkins but I think I'd be in for the same instinct-rattling that Vinny found with Olsen. I think many of these guys are "what do the scouts see?" types. Like, Kelly Johnson. He looked like a good player at one time. Could be be that bad an option for second base any longer?

I dunno about Atkins. He had a .790 OPS vs lefties last year. That's... not so good if you're talking 1B platoon. Wang's interesting, cuz I think he's either completely shot or will bounce right back to form. He was killed by a .397 BABIP (!) last year, which would ruin anyone's season, but his other peripherals make him seem like an entirely different pitcher last year than any other in his career. His GB% dropped, of course, and his FB% shot up. His HR/FB went through the roof, going from around 6.5% to over 17%. His K% went up, but that might not be such a great thing when you consider that his BB% rose at the same rate. It seems batters started laying off his groundball-inducing pitches and started absolutely demolishing his other stuff. All the same, it was only one season. He seems like exactly the kinda player incentive-laden contracts were made for.

I'm not sure what to think of CM Wang. Poor guy just hasn't been the same since the rules in that mean old non-DH league bit him back in 2008. But, even when he was good, I always had this feeling (partially hope maybe) that he was both benefitting from the team around him and walking a fine line that could fall apart around him at a moment's notice. The lack of strike-outs were always a concern. But as his walk-rate started climbing over the last few years it left his superior ground ball ratio as the only support on his three-legged stool. So even if that somehow reappears once (and if) he gets healthy I still fear that he's on the razor's edge of being an, at best, ordinary hurler.

In case anyone is thinking of starting a "Memories of Lance Broadway" thread, here's mine: When the Mets signed him, I had a couple of immediate reactions: Man, this guy had had horrible numbers in the minors. I hope its just for Buffalo. If he ever gets to the Mets, it will mean they are having an injury-filled season. Why couldn't Omar find abybody better? Y'know what? Looking back, I was correct on all accounts. Nothing personal, though. In fact, now that he's gone, if anyone meets him, you can give my regards to Broadway. Later

I don't know what happened to Garrett Atkins. Over the last four years he's gone: BA: .309 - .301 - .286 - .226 OBA: .409 - .367 - .328 - .308 SLG: .556 - .486 - .452 - .342 Walk rate: .100 - .066 - .042 - .082 IsoP: .247 - .185 - .166 - .116 and that's all at Coors!! - even though I know Coors is now 'Coors-Light' these days what with the humidor and all that, but still! Plus he was playing every day (over 600 PAs) during each of those years until this last one (still had 400 PAs) so it's not one of those cases where you could claim he was getting burned by a manager who had no faith in him or something. If anyone gets half a clue as to get him even partially turned around he'd make a good 1B platoon/RH-PH guy who could give Wright the occasional day off. Turned 30 yesterday.

I wouldn't want to touch Wang...I always thought he looked ready to collapse, the magic act is likely over. Ryan Garko was non-tendered, he hits lefties very well and isn't a total lost cause against righties, if he doesnt mind a platoon and PH roll i'd throw wilpon's money at him.

But if he's lost (or is even losing) that pitch then he's a one-trick pony without his one trick. I suspect the Yanx will re-sign him for several million and store him in AAA for 'break glass in case of emergency' purposes - for some figure that's a lot more than anyone else will think is reasonable but still a lot less than they would have had to pay him through arbitration.

I think Wang would be great on a 1-3 mil/league min-plus-5 million perf bonus flyer. I also think, though, that he's sticking in pinstripes. Atkins could be useful... but the decline is frightening. And he'd cost a good amount (think 6-million plus) for a platoon partner. Matt Capps, eh? Smells like pre-Met Putz at a discount (thanks to "failures" closing). I'd also take Kelly Johnson (who can also play a credible OF in a pinch) and/or Langerhans (takes a ton of walks/poor man's Endy/practically free).

Yeah, I'd see about Capps. Other bullpen names: Seth McClung (had some success but walks too many guys), Clay Condrey (Phils want him back but at a di$count)

Condrey's intriguing. He'd probably have to be overwhelmed to move north, methinks. Plus, he's a pretty solidly GB-oriented reliever (K/9 just above 5, 2-1 GB/FB ratio); it would be a solid bet that he'd put up at least slightly iffier numbers in front of our IF (Feliz > Wright, Utley > Castillo).
