With this great team taking shape we hardly even need a GM but we should vote on one anyway......

I voted for the Omar who put together the 2006 club, not for the Omar who took his place immediately thereafter.

Steve Phillips would get my vote for the 90's, for putting together the 1999 team.

(And the 2000 team, but I wouldn't have known about that one yet ten years ago this week.)

So 2006 causes my vote to go to Omar.

Re: Mets Team of the Noughties - General Manager

I have to vote for steve.

not only did they make the WS under him, the team seemed less dysfunctional than it is under Omar. yeah, i do remember how crazy it was with bobby vs steve. but at least he fired bobby appropriately, vs omar.

It's hard to judge, because i think both have made pretty bad signings. Steve, at least, didn't waste the extra money on role players.

either way...
1) medical staff made both of their jobs worse.
2) ownership made both of their jobs worse.

Phillips' best moments came in the 90's, so I had to go with Omar.

I'm surprised to see Jim Duquette get a vote.

His reign was the second half (roughly) of 2003 and then 2004. All I can think of offhand that happened during those years was the promotion of David Wright, the Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano trades, and the firing of Art Howe.

Left to close the door on a lot of the Phillips era --- dealing off Alomar, Rey Sanchez, Graeme Lloyd, Cedeņo, and Benitez.

Two big signings that offseason were Looper and Kaz (insert the drama of not getting backpage splashes here), but also Mike Cameron, which demonstrated that the team was listening to their stats-crunching department.

Lost Scutaro on waivers... but made a nice rule V grab with Eric Valent.

Put Tony Clark on the bench (the only thumper we've had there in the last 10 years)... but initiated the unfortunate Spencer-Garcia platoon.

Found a place for Ricky Bottalico in the pen... but tried to nail down the fifth-starter slot with Scott Erickson/James Baldwin/Joe Shlabotnik.

Wasn't a rainmaker... but no sexual offenses during his tenure.

Seriously, on a better (and healthier) team, late model Tony Clark and Todd Zeile on the bench might be pretty sweet.

Nice summery there Edgy, I'd forgotten most of that....Duquette's young daughter at the time went through a rare kidney disease , lucky to have survived IIRC.

i can't fault phillips for the alomar trade. before alomar actually came to NY, everyone thought it was a good trade.... everyone.

on top of that, as much as everyone hated benitez, he was good. cedeno had put up a couple decent seasons and was supposed to be entering his prime.... unfortunately, he had an early prime.

Well, any credit on Benitez goes mostly toward Steve Phillips o' the Nineites. Phillips o' the Noughties only gets credit (such that it is) for keeping him around.

No option for the SuperScouts team and their progressive views on the roles of Asian women?
