I would rank the top 3 as:
|
metirish Dec 16 2009 09:59 AM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
Mike Piazza , he had such a special presence about him , certainly in his prime anyway.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Dec 16 2009 10:04 AM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
The correct answer is Wright is player, Leiter the pitcher.

It's purely a personnel choice for me, I could care less what Neyer thinks.......and no your eyes didn't fail you.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Dec 16 2009 10:35 AM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
The best years of his career were prior to 2000, it's not a big mystery. Geez.

MFS62 Dec 16 2009 10:41 AM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
I know, but seeing Corey Koskie's name on that list and Mike's not kinda upset me.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Dec 16 2009 11:56 AM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
Not to impugn Piazza's memory, but I think part of the reason his "presence" stood out is because most of the hitters surrounding him (Oly and Fonzie notwithstanding) had so little of it themselves. [Another testament to Bobby V-- he consistently seemed able to build a 757 out of a jet engine, balsa wood and duct tape.]

Farmer Ted Dec 16 2009 11:59 AM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
Edge Piazza. See Sept. 21, 2001.
|
Benjamin Grimm Dec 16 2009 01:57 PM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
Piazza and Beltran had more spectacular individual seasons than Wright did, but Wright gets it for his longevity and consistency. (At least, his consistency through 2008. 2009 still earned him longevity points.)
|
G-Fafif Dec 16 2009 02:03 PM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
Wright and Beltran have been top players. But Piazza was The Man.
|
smg58 Dec 16 2009 02:17 PM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
A very slight edge for Wright, on account of his being an elite player for more seasons this decade than Piazza.
|
metirish Dec 16 2009 02:23 PM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
As much as I like Wright I just don't have that same emotional attachment with him that I felt with Piazza. The sense that something big was going to happen when he came to bat...the way he swung the bat before hoisting it up to get ready for the pitch....he was a superstar and the first Mets player I really liked.

That feeling you describe about Piazza is one that I haven't had since Hernandez and Strawberry.

G-Fafif Dec 16 2009 04:04 PM Re: Mets Player of the Decade |
Everything Piazza did as a Met in the 2000s, on the field, off the field, around the field, was, or at least was treated, as momentous. Changing positions, coming back from injury, the Clemens episodes, the last out of the World Series, slapping Hernandez for the "quitter" remark, not being gay, the catcher home run record, obviously the mega-huge home runs (10-run inning; 9/21/01; Almanzar), the long goodbye, the return with San Diego, walking out Shea's center field gate with Seaver, coming back to catch Tom's first pitch in the new place. Sure he built on '98 and '99, but he was a larger-than-life figure as a Met all the way. His numbers declined but his stature never seriously suffered.

Wright. He personified this decade for me. Piazza's stuck in a time warp for me - half in this decade, half in the last, despite spending more time in this one.

I'm coming out. I took Benitez. nobody quite defined the mets of this decade like Benitez did. to me, he epitomizes what the mets have been: awesome when it doesn't count... a nervous wreck otherwise.
