Did you guys see the concert on HBO? Some good stuff there.

I'm thinking that an in-their-prime Genesis and Jimmy Cliff collabo would be mind-blowing. Or terrible. Either way, I'd be curious. (Also, a Stooges-ABBA thing. But a terrified Frida-and-Agnetha would be half the entertainment value, really.) Highlights of the concert?

I guess they want to call it the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame for marketing reasons, and to keep most country and hip-hop music out. But if you're going to induct ABBA and Jimmy Cliff it seems like it should be the "Music" Hall of Fame. Not that I have any problem with Jimmy Cliff being recognized, mind you.

I can't really say there was a bad choice, but I would have preferred Laura Nyro to the Hollies.

I can. How in the hell can you induct the Hollies and all three of their forgettable hits while leaving Kiss out to dry???

It shouldn't really be about the hits. But to the extent that it is, the Hollies have had a pile of them internationally. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hollies_discography And I guess it's supposed to represent an international legacy.

Because they occasionally consider talent when evaluating these things.

You sayin' that singing "Christine Sixteen" while wearing thigh-high dragon boots and bat wings isn't talent?

Because they occasionally consider talent when evaluating these things. Kiss-- Simmons, specifically-- were supremely talented self-promoters and -marketers. You'd think a guy like Jann Wenner could appreciate that.

[quote="Centerfield":28hr3mna]Did you guys see the concert on HBO? Some good stuff there.[/quote:28hr3mna] I went to those shows. They were over 2 nights at the Garden at the end of October. Some tremendous highlights and a lot of really outstanding and interesting performances. Most of the bad stuff fortunately didn't make the broadcast. As for the inductions: I see some worthy people there but the Hall of Fame (as a collection of artists) is cheapened by the requirement that five artists are inducted every year. Have no problem with the Stooges or Genesis but the rest seem like stretches. Further, the Hall is of course straying from "Rock and Roll" hall of fame and soon would be more correctly named a "pop music" hall of fame. See inductions of Jackson, Michael; Madonna; Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 and forthcoming induction of Abba...

Well I'll be delightedly damned that ABBA made it. I haven't felt this warm/fuzzy about a Hall of Fame selection since Bob Murphy won the Ford C. Frick. To turn "Waterloo" on its ear, the history book on the shelf isn't always repeating itself. Go Kiss. Go Rush. Go whoever is anybody else's cause. I got one of mine.

Definitely. Put 'em in the "Marketing and Self-Promotion Hall of Fame" with Reggie Jackson, Coca-Cola, and Bose Audio. They'll make it eventually anyway, what with the 5 per year rule and all. They'll probably be inducted with Yo-Yo Ma, Ace of Base, Al Yankovic, and Winger.

Wait...Ace of Base isn't in yet? My first reaction when I heard that ABBA got in was, "Yep, and the Bee Gees are going in next, right?" Too late. They've been in since 1997.
