Weather.com and StormPulse (STORMPULSE!) tell me it's snowing here right now. It ain't.

cooby Dec 19 2009 09:36 AM Re: It's really comin down out there |
Same thing at Accuweather. Are they so intent on making sure we think this is the storm of the century (again) that they are posting fake maps?

It's those East Anglican University scientists screwing with the data again.

MFS62 Dec 19 2009 09:46 AM Re: It's really comin down out there |
LWFS, Cooby, the satellite maps are correct - it is snowing - at the upper levels of the atmosphere. The local weather guys are telling us that the air is so dry that the moisture is not reaching the ground. Wait a while. It will eventually start snowing at ground level. Later

Ordinarily I like a good snowstorm, but today, I'm rooting for it to hold off just a little bit longer - at least until we can take mmm (mini metsmarathon, natch!) home
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Dec 19 2009 10:07 AM Re: It's really comin down out there |
Plus, the storm's movement has apparently slowed. Work is in touch with city/surrounding OEMs: projections for snow amounts seem to be tracking upward.

soupcan Dec 19 2009 10:12 AM Re: It's really comin down out there |
Had to drive from Westport, CT to West Hartford, CT and back this morning. Roughly 120 miles round trip. Was doing 85-90 each way just to make certain I got back before the snow. Nothing like driving unsafely in order to avoid driving unsafely.

First flakes hit Fafifville at 1:05 PM. It's twenty minutes later and their friends are showing up in droves...uninvited, I might add.

Thanks, MF. He's really worked hard for this and we're very happy for him, although after seven years of school and one year of internship I'm sure he's even happier to be done with college.

Frayed Knot Dec 19 2009 01:41 PM Re: It's really comin down out there |
I love it when the weather plays havoc with the NFL schedule - mostly because they're so anal about things and because, being so tied to both TV-friendly slots and the weekend (or surrounding) days, there are so few options for their contingency plans to maneuver. So this week it seems that da Bears didn't get into Baltimore on Friday like they wanted and they can't get in there today - they're looking at maybe 18" or more in eastern Maryland from this storm. So the 1PM game in Bal'mer (outdoors too - heh, heh, heh) has already been rescheduled to 4PM but even that's predicated on Chicago getting in Sunday morning and playing same day so that's no guarantee to come off either - and if it does occur watch the betting line move towards the Ravens. Failing that, it get's pushed back a full day and a half so there'll be a second Monday night game this week, something which will either give ESPN a heart attack or an erection - or maybe both. My own personal dream involves a Super Bowl in Miami getting hit with a tropical storm right at game time (not a deadly one, just messy) or one on the west coast which coincides with one of those days-long drenching storms that they often get out there during the winter months.

Nope. A house. A very tiny house. Just been out to do the walk and dig out the Tercel. Will have to do it again at 6:00 AM. Our miserable miserable dog, on the other hand, was having the time of his life out there.

Doggies + snow = good times. Meanwhile we have a couple of new inches, not a big deal around here. Still coming down though

News12 Long Island has a reporter telling drivers on the Southern State to take it very slowly, making me wonder how many of those driving on the Southern State at that very moment are also watching News12.

Edgy DC Dec 19 2009 08:31 PM Re: It's really comin down out there |
Still going where I am. We snuggled up with the Japanese farce Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald (lot's of fun, physical comedy, blows to the head... 3.5 stars out of five!), and as the credits rolled, we heard a rumbling sound above. "Here it comes," I thought, "the big one." I prayed to clear my conscience, fully expecting the crackling over us to turn into a cascade of plaster and ice, but no, the snow flew off behind me, taking out a roof gutter. The cutter crumbled into the yard, itself taking down what I think is a phone line. The line lays in the snow in the back yard. My phone works, and obviously my Interweb service also. But I may soon be bidding goodbye for a few days. At least, I hope just for a few days. My world has become a void of white as it is.

Well, it's still snowing. And I guess it's still Washington out there, but all I see is a horizon of white.

themetfairy Dec 19 2009 08:51 PM Re: It's really comin down out there |
I remember back in the days of the Cold War that Art Buchwald wrote a column saying that if the Russians wanted to take over the United States all they would have to do was salt the clouds above DC and make it snow. I was actually living in Rockville in 1966 and remember the blizzard that year. It closed down everything in the vicinity.

Hmm, maybe we really will wake up to 12-15" in these parts. Yesterday it was 3-5" because it was gonna miss us. Should we talk about the weather? Click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnIkZMg4kbo

Cold and rainy here in eastern NC. A few flakes yesterday, but not enough to turn ther grass white. My father-in-law reports 10"-12" in Charleston, WV and my mother reports roughly 20"-22" in Waynesboro, VA. Glad to have missed out on this winter storm.

Just finished shoveling out , took about 90 minutes but that was because of the drifts. All in all not as bad as was reported to be.

Valadius Dec 20 2009 06:45 AM Re: It's really comin down out there |
Washington Post says we got 16 inches in the District, with some suburbs getting about 21 inches. This breaks all records for a storm in December.

themetfairy Dec 20 2009 09:05 AM Re: It's really comin down out there |
The Philly airport had close to two feet of snow, breaking their record for largest December snowfall. D-Dad guesstimates that we had about 14" here.

Northwestern CT, dodged the bullet. While the Eastern parts of the State got up to 20 inches, the folks in Litchfield County (the one just North of us) only got about 1- 2 inches. We were in the 6 - 8 inch range. Later
