Rank Your 2009 Mets

There were a million of them. Feel free to rank them all. I just need your top 30.

In reviewing this list, I was surprised to find out the guy I had most forgotten about was Ken Takahashi.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

I remember Switzer, because he came in to face Hideki Matsui with two on during the "Dos Manos" game, and ended up giving up a bomb to RF. (His debut?)

Tobi Stoner? If I were a touch more paranoid, and I hadn't seen his name elsewhere, I'd be pretty sure you guys were f*cking with me.

OE: A quick look over to B-R.com confirms that Dos Manos WAS indeed Jon Switzer's Met debut.

I have some vague memory of Stoner "pulling a Milledge" -- i.e., not knowing his place, Rook -- but I've already forgotten it. Was there a specific episode or something? I know it was only 3 months ago, feels like 5 years.

I haven't even looked at the numbers but I can tell you right now that Parnell belongs higher than several guys on your list (Sullivan, Misch, Takahashi, Redding), simply as a function of being there all year.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

In recent weeks, Stoner has been buzzed about the blogosphere as a dark horse for the Mets rotation. Really good control, but like Pelfrey, having trouble finding an out pitch.

He's the second-ever Met born in Germany, joining Ron Gardenhire in the small fraternity of ÃœberMets.

I disagree. 88.1 IP of a 78 ERA+ (Parnell) is worth less to me than:

Misch - 59 IP of a 100 ERA+
Redding - 120 IP of an 81 ERA+
Sullivan - 157 PA of a 92 OPS+

I could probably be talked into moving Takahashi down on my list as he had only 27.1 IP of a 139 ERA+, but Parnell was the crappiest pitcher that was there all year.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Right, but shouldn't he get some bonus for having been considered more valuable than some of those others who were added to later or sent down sooner or not as durable as he was?

Also -- and again, I haven't looked at the actual figures yet -- it wouldn't surprise me to find he did a lot of damage to his ERA as a worn-out garbage-time converted starter after many of his teammates, some ranked above him, proved they didn't have it physically. But I won't argue so hard till I do some rankings myself.

Yup. Parnell was effective as a reliever, and ineffective as a starter pretty much after the Mets had thrown in the towel by shutting Santana down.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

As I suspected coming in to this, this season is going to produce a real wide variety of answers with certain players ranking near the top of some lists and sinking to the bottom of others. When we get a few more responses and some sort of consensus starts to emerge it’ll be a good spot for folks to make an argument for their choices - particularly in those spots where they vary from the pack.

I haven’t concocted the full list yet, but I’ll start by sorting through the hitters

* Wright - even in a down power year he was still out there everyday and put up .307/.390 BA/OBA with 52 XBHs and by far the most Runs Created on the team
* Beltran - despite missing a huge chunk of the season and only coming back when things were virtually over, he was the best (and only) all-around offensive threat while he was in
* Castillo - one of only three full-timers, his high OBA and middle IF glove partially makes up for the total lack of slugging
* Murphy - leading this team in HRs is like being the best ice hockey player in Peru, but playing almost everyday and knocking 53 XBHs helped to obscure the low OBA. He loses out to Castillo due to his early failure in LF
* Francoeur - despite the concerns about his future here it was a good half-season
* Pagan - next among the fill-ins. His ridiculous triples total actually shoved his slugging above everyone except Francoeur and his ‘D’ would have pushed him higher if not for the atrocious base-running
* Tatis - beats out Sheffield due to better durability and despite the seemingly endless string of rally-killing GiDPs
* Sheffield - best thing about him was the bang for the buck we got
* Santos - nice find and seemed to get a bunch of big hits along the way but mostly shined mainly as compared to the rest of the backstops
* Reyes - wins the SS competition despite only half the ABs of the backup
* Cora - this is what back-up short-stops look like folks
* Church - the slugging we saw for half of 2008 never came back
* Delgado - was going great for the first 100 ABs, then didn’t get any more
* Sullivan - Reed - Cory wins the competition of virtually identical slappy 5th OFers
* Thole - promising first 50 ABs
* Castro - that 8 of his 20 hits were for XBs is the only reason for him getting this high
* Schneider - just never hit
* A. Hernandez - looked better than the last time we saw him
* out of the running - F. Martinez, Valdez
Evans, R. Martinez, Berroa, Brown, Anderson

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

After Sullivan. I put them together like that because the two were virtual statistical twins vying for the same role; one could call them the Suck and Suck-A of backup OFers.
Sullivan's near-freakish capacity for triples and the fact that he was awarded the starting job for a while instead of Reed gave him the edge.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

There's no way that Reed makes my list. Marginal defensive value... and he made Schneider look good with the bat by comparison.

Sullivan's year looks more like the defensive replacement/occasional pinch-hitter you want.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Pitchers:

* Santana - Even with the injury-shortened year it’s no contest

All others tie for last -- but, since we have to place them in some kind of order ....

* Feliciano - Seems weird to put a specialist this high, but he had lower WHiP & ERA totals than just about everyone else and, unless someone else wants to correct me, I don’t remember him being too bad on the inherited runners situation
* Rodriguez - Yeah, I know, but at least he had half a good year. Same number of hits and HRs allowed as Feliciano and in fewer innings but double the number of walks and half again as many runs allowed
* Pelfrey - Had some good games here and there while leading the team in innings pitched
* Stokes - Geez, the walks allowed by this staff was frightening
* Redding - Better than Livan
* L. Hernandez - Not as good as Redding
* Figueroa - A little of this, a little of that
* Parnell - Was great for a while, then lost his control, then was horrid as a starter
* Misch - Some decent relief outings plus a fine start or two
* S. Green - Hit a few more batters why doncha? Good stuff but I wonder sometimes if he knows where it’s going
* Nieve - Looked good for a time and then (say it with me people) got injured
* Dessens - Actually did OK during the brief time he was out there
* Rounding out the rest: Takahashi - Niese - Putz - Perez
* Out of the running -- Broadway, Stoner, Fossum, Switzer, O’Day, Wagner

Combined list.
A few things were changed around from the above pre-lists. Main snag was that I omitted Maine earlier (now I 'Remembered the Maine'), otherwise I just swapped a few guys a step or two higher or lower.

9 - Church
8 - Parnell
7 - Misch
6 - S. Green
5 - Schneider

As always, both list and creator are open to questions, suggestions, insults, IQ tests, etc.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

It seemed silly to see Redding above Hernandez, but I checked the stats and they support that ranking. (I'd be tempted to put Maine above Livan also.)

The argument in Hernandez's support is that most of Redding's production, such as it was, came too late to be of much use.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Were Redding physically able he'd have raised Hernandez several notches on this list simply by getting him off the team sooner. Maybe he had a good September but Redding to me was a complete disaster: Unable to deliver the very depth he was acquired to provide because he showed up out of shape.

All right folks, we all got some ‘splainin’ to do.
Eight votes are in to date - plus our PotG final tally - so some sort of consensus is starting to emerge. But this season more than most has some wild variances both high and low with a number of players.

Below is a list of where the submitted votes varied most from the rest of the pack. These spots are usually a good kicking off point for discussion as they can be used to lead you to either re-evaluate your votes or stick to it and instruct the rest of us where and why we’re out to lunch.
And, of course, those who want to throw in their own 2 cents but haven't yet are welcome to speak up.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

On Pelfrey , it seems I was lower on the guy that the Schaefer voting results show....I dunno but he disappointed to me. Led the team in innings as FK noted, is that a big thing on that team with the way the season went?

I suppose I was waiting for the big season for him but I also forget that he's only had two full seasons when I look at his stats....I think he can be a #2 guy if that means anything but to often he seems to be not in the game.

On Parnell - I guess I was high on him when he went back to the pen.

The idea isn’t to worry about how far you’re away from the Schaefer results. That result is just one factor thrown into this project and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s the least accurate because it’s not really measuring the same thing.

The reason I parsed the votes from those who have put in lists so far is to show where there are significant differences as compared to the opinions of all the others. That isn’t to say a stray vote means you’re wrong and the others right, only that you’ve got a very different view of that player(s) which could serve as a starting point for a discussion, one where you either re-evaluate your own choices or to stick to your guns and tell the rest of us why we’re missing the boat.

For instance:

- What logic did 86-Dreamer use to put Tatis a full 13 slots behind the statistically similar Sheffield? Or why Maine is, in his mind, so far (11 spots) ahead of Pelfrey when the rest of us have those two pretty close? Or why he has Cora much higher than everyone? Or why does F. Martinez make his list but not Misch, Sullivan, or Castro?

- Transmonk puts Sean Green in the middle of the pack while LWFS leaves him off completely! Either of them want to argue where the other one is nuts?

- Maybe LWFS wants to tell us how Frankie Rod had a worse season than Church, Castro, Maine, and others, including Niese and his whopping 25 IPs.

- Fartinez had all of 91 ABs and batted a whopping .176 yet he scores better than Church, Green, Misch, and Redding on Met Irish’s list. Remember, we're evaluating a player's 2009 performance here not his anticipated future or contract status.

- Seawolf, meanwhile, not only finds room for Ollie but puts him on instead of Thole, Sullivan, or Niese, and ahead of the likes of Church, Figueroa, Nieve and others.

- Cora was, for the most part, the starting SS and Parnell was 5th in the team in IP yet Nymr leaves both off but finds room for AndyHandy & Dessens
... plus the other large discrepancies I pointed earlier.

And again, if those are your choices then feel free to tell the rest of us where we’re off. Or you can opt to concede some points and argue others. The idea of this project is to have a post-mortem discussion of the year and not merely submit top-of-the-head lists and be done with it. Hell, we argue about everything else here it would be a shame to skip this topic.

I copied the 2009 stats from bbref, gave every player a score from 1-100, where Wright got a 100 for being the best player this year (not for being especially good - just better than everyone else), and then made some judgmental changes.

Parnell moved up for being around all year and for having been a successful reliever. Murphy moved up for showing some improvement at the end of the year. Cora moved up because he was really put into a position beyond his pay grade last season and did about as well as could be reasonably expected. Pagan, whose stats were (to me) surprisingly good in 2009, moved down for the frequent mental errors.

Dessens also surprised me with his good stats. I moved him down because I don't remember him actually doing any pitching for the Mets in 2009.

The scores I gave out mostly clustered around a solidly mediocre 75. Any of the players from Delgado down to Parnell could be switched, and I wouldn't give you too much of an argument.

were delgado's 26 games so tremendously good that they outweigh daniel murphy's 155, and jose reyes' 36?

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Delgado: 112 PA, 4 HR, 23 RBI, .298/.393/.521 (BA/OBP/SLG)
Reyes: 166 PA, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 11 SB, .279/.355/.395
Murphy: 556 PA, 12 HR, 63 RBI, .266/.313/.427

I think Delgado easily beats Reyes. Neither of them played much, and Delgado was far better offensively when he did play, even considering the expected difference between a 1B and a middle infielder.

It's a tossup between Delgado and Murphy. Murphy's OPS+ was below league average - unacceptable for a player who played LF horrendously and (from what I saw - no stats here) wasn't particularly good or bad at 1B. I ranked them closely, so Murphy's attendance skills roughly balanced out Delgado's offensive skills. I could see ranking Murphy above Delgado, but I don't see it as an obvious decision.

Cora's exclusion was intentional, i dont give points for attendance. Parnell deserves consideration because he was a serviceable reliever before being pushed into starting duty in largely meaningless games, i'll look more closely at him when i revise (which wont be at 2am on a sunday)

Not that I believe in the notion of "meaningful games," but if there is such a thing, Anderson Hernandez didn't get into too many of them, arriving after the first week of August.

Cora didn't just show up.

Considering all the examples we had befor Jose Reyes, I'd think we could be a little more tolerant about what shortstops tend to be.

Just for grins, I put together a table showing the scores that we've given so far, along with average and standard deviation. Schaefer is excluded from the averaging stats.

After compiling this table, I've gained a new respect for people who spell our right fielder's name correctly.

I get huge spaces anytime I attempt to submit a table. Any of you guys who know something about tables have any hints? (on edit - thx, Grimm)

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Does that come with a code translator or do we need security clearance first?

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

What's to know? I crunched them around and ranked them. Publishing my total points are useful in knowing how big the gaps were between players.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Well either I was mis-reading the chart last night (always possible ... late at night, alcohol) or that first column has been fixed because the numbers looked out of order and I couldn't figure out what was what.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

No, I did find some out of order. I don't know why it sorted wrong. Sorry.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

I've got Pelfrey buried. I've got to double check ihim.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Fugit. Knock Wagner the hell out of there. He's artifically boosted by an arbitrary number. Two excelelnt innings are still TWO. Scheider becomes number two and Mixch number one.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Yeah, I was gonna mention that for a guy who usually preaches the idea that those who put in the time have to be at least somewhat rewarded, you've got the 1, 3 & 4 guys in innings pitched (Pelfrey, Livan, Redding) buried behind a bunch of short-timers - Wagner was the most obvious, but also the likes of Dessens, Takahashi, Castro, etc.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Well, Dessens and Takahashi each pitched in 28 games, which isn't a lot but is more than a little, and did pretty well. (Dessens had a 3.31 ERA and Takahashi's was 2.96)

It was hard to balance guys like that (Nieve also fits that category) with others with pitched more but less well. (Like Redding and Pelfrey and Parnell.) I think in most cases I went with the quality over the quantity.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

Well Perez pitched at replcaement rate, so I've got no apologies for him.

I guess some of those others were too close to replacment rate, but ERA+ isn't as accurate as OPS+ and I need to make adjustments there.

Re: Rank Your 2009 Mets

This has to be a first in our years of doing this as a consensus year-end ranking, that 11 different players were simultaneously ranked in the top half by some folks and off the chart completely by others:

- Stokes
as high as 23 points (8th overall) by Transmonk
not ranked at all by LWFS

- Livan H.
20 points (11th) by LWFS & PotY
unranked by Edgy

- Parnell
17 points from Irish & 86-Dreamer
unranked by Nymr83

- Cora
21 points from 86-Dreamer
unranked by Nymr83

- Nieve
18 from Transmonk
unranked by Vic Sage

- Church
17 from Edgy & Grimm
unranked by Irish

- Sean Green
16 from Grimm
unranked by LWFS

- Redding
15 from Frayed Knot and Nymr83 (also 17 from PotY)
unranked by Irish & Edgy

- Misch
as high as 16 from Nymr & Transmonk
no score from 86-Dreamer

- Niese
15 from LWFS
numerous zeros elsewhere

- Dessens
15 from Grimm
numerous zeros

Several folks here claim to either be working or re-working on something here.
At some point we're going to want to wrap this up.
