I think I have to embrace my inner old fart, if the alternative is embracing corporate music masquerading as a countercultural threat. Charlene refers to the subwoofer sonic sludge pouring out of the car next to us as "Orcsong."

my nano stopped working yesterday, so i went to the soho apple store and they gave me a brand new one on the spot. i love those guys. my ipod had permanantly set itself on hold, regardless of the position of the hold switch.

My iPod just stopped working yesterday. Nothing works. Plugging it in does nothing. I think the nearest Apple store is at the mall in Danbury.
cooby Oct 31 2005 12:32 PM |
Elster, my son's stopped working a couple weeks ago and he thought it was because he left it in the car overnight and it got too cold; my husband thought he did something wrong when he took the car for gas and turned off the radio and adaptor, etc, etc.

no that wont erase it, just reboot it if it is acting funny. to erase it you run the ipod updater on it, which resets it to blank with factory setting and no music. the reset you do by holding down the buttons doesnt erase anything.

I've had my Mini since June, and I have a playlist question: if I create a playlist, can I control the order in which the songs are played? Each time I listen to a playlist, it seems the song order is random.

No Beatles, Zeppelin or AC/DC on iTunes.
Edgy DC Feb 08 2006 07:36 AM Edited 3 time(s), most recently on Feb 08 2006 08:02 AM |
In my attempts to find AC/DC on iTunes, I stumbled across Hayseed Dixie, a country-pickin AC/DC tribute act. Since the glory days of Dread Zeppelin, I've found gimmicky recontextualizing tribute acts to be obvious and unfunny at worst, and bedeviled by a short shelf life at best. But I've enjoyed these guys, built around the notion that Hank Williams' "Lost Highway" and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" are the same road. The vocalist sings as if he's down to his last three teeth, and they sound just as terrifically stupid as the songs they cover.
Elster88 Feb 08 2006 07:55 AM |
I find it easier to deal when it's a really good band that sticks up their collective nose at iTunes. I can just buy the CD and most of the tracks are good.

I need new 'phones too: Mine have come apart at both earbuds and the joint where the wires connect.
Rotblatt Mar 01 2006 07:39 AM |
As a matter of fact, I do. I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-EX81 in-ear headphones, and I think they're pretty damn good. I got them on sale for around $50 at RadioShack. I've also heard good things about the MDR-EX71's, which I think are cheaper.
Methead Mar 01 2006 07:44 AM |
I had the Sony EX-71 phones for a couple years, and liked them fine until the right one died.

Picked these up yesterday, 2 questions: --Why the F doesn't the extension jack fit snugly? Unless you're completely delicate with it you'll lose one channel. --What's the logic behind there being 1 ear peice with a shorter cord than the other? It seems to want to force you to place your device in your right pocket, which can be a pain if you prefer to put your bag on the right side like me. I better not hate these...
Rotblatt Mar 07 2006 09:36 AM |
Huh. I have the 81, and thought I was the only one with a shorter cord on the ear piece. I figured it was a manufacturer defect and didn't care enough to get off my ass and return it. If it's planned, it makes no sense to me at all. Not sure about the extension jack--or what an extension jack is. My headphones plug in fine, although for the first 2 days of having my iPod, I didn't push in the plug far enough and was all "Why the hell is the sound so soft? Am I going deaf?"
soupcan Mar 07 2006 09:38 AM |
Methead Mar 07 2006 09:43 AM |
Hmm... I never used the extension jack, since I had the ipod remote instead. Not sure I can help you there, they could be defective.
Johnny Dickshot Mar 07 2006 09:46 AM |
I get it now. They're designed to go behind the neck, not in front.

Wasn't Apple Computers behind the Us Festival?
sharpie Mar 08 2006 08:51 AM |
Steve Wozniak, a co-founder of Apple, was behind the Us Festival. I was living in California at the time but never seriously thought of going. If I had I would've seen the last Clash performance.
Rotblatt Mar 08 2006 09:00 AM |
Behind your neck, huh? I'm retarded. This is much better.
Methead Mar 08 2006 01:56 PM |
The sound really depends on the quality of the fit in your ear. It's possible you're getting a better seal, now that the weight of the cord isn't trying to pull the plugs out of your ears.
martin Mar 08 2006 04:06 PM |
i picked up a pair of the sony in-ear plugs, and i like them but i have minor issues. i like to listen to music during lunch, and the in-ear style really makes the sounds of crunching and chewing rattle my skull.
Methead Mar 09 2006 08:50 AM |
Yeah, you definitely need to keep your wits about you when you're out walking around.
Johnny Dickshot Mar 09 2006 08:56 AM |
Well, it's official: I hate these headphones. The extension attatchment is ridiculous, the shit doesn't stay in my ears, and I don;t see the great advantage to behind the head (or disadvantage either, I will add).
Willets Point Mar 09 2006 09:07 AM |
I can't stand earbuds so I just use a set of regular headphones I got for 3 for $10 at Radio Shack (I tend to break headphones so I'm not shilling out more for anything fancier).

Are they all 'checked' in your iTunes? Do you have manual or automatic update selected?
HahnSolo Mar 10 2006 06:14 PM |
Thanks. I've solved the problem, I think. I downloaded the latest iPod updater, and have the most updated iTunes. So things are working.
soupcan Mar 10 2006 07:28 PM |
Automatic is what you want. If you have it set to manual it will only upload those songs that are checked. With your iPod connected and selected in your iTunes go to 'Edit', 'Preferences', 'iPod'. Under the 'Music' tab select 'Automatically update all songs and playlists'. Done.

Elster88 Apr 04 2006 07:39 PM |
Is there really no way to delete songs from your iPod?
soupcan Apr 04 2006 08:09 PM |
Sure you can delete songs. You have to delete them from your iTunes first, then sync up your iPod. Your iPod will mirror exactly what is in your iTunes so if a song is deleted from iTunes it won't show up on your 'Pod.
Elster88 Apr 16 2006 02:54 PM |
I still owe Soupcan $20, but, I've got one more question. I don't want all these songs jamming up space on my computer. Deleting out my "Library" in iTunes won't delete them from my iPod will it?
mlbaseballtalk Apr 16 2006 02:56 PM |
Nope
Elster88 May 05 2006 07:56 AM |
I've been spending a dollar a song on iTunes. But my buddy yelled at me and mentioned a site he subscribes to where you get any song you want for a $50 yearly subscription fee. I figure I'll probably download 50 or slightly more songs a year so it sounds like a good deal to me.
Johnny Dickshot May 05 2006 08:06 AM |
Isn't the deal with those services that you must continue to pay for the service no matter how many songs you buy and when you cancel you can't hear them anymore?
Elster88 May 05 2006 08:51 AM |
From what he was telling me, you download and keep the MP3 just like with iTunes. Then you put it on your iPod or a CD or your hard drive or whatever. I could be wrong.
Rockin' Doc May 07 2006 07:47 PM |
I'm with JD on this. I pay 99 cents per track that way I never have to worry about losing music if I choose to drop my subscription.

I'm with him too.

Elster88 May 08 2006 07:50 AM |
Can anyone else readdress my original question? Does anyone know of a site where you pay a yearly subscription fee of $50 where you keep the songs the same way you keep them from iTunes?
Johnny Dickshot May 08 2006 08:00 AM |
Not that I know of.
Elster88 May 08 2006 08:40 AM |

TheOldMole May 24 2006 07:06 PM |
Elster - I used to have a service like that -- I think it was called e-music. It wouldn't be for everyone -- it doesn't have much in the way of contemporary hits. I loved it, because it had pretty close to the entire Blue Note, Prestige and Riverside jazz catalogs.
TheOldMole May 24 2006 07:08 PM |
My first 78 RPM single was "Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots" by the Cheers. I can't remember my first 45 - you'd think I would. First LP was "Satch Plays Fats."

Willets Point Jun 20 2006 10:56 AM |
If you import a CD that has a secret bonus track, it shows up in iTunes as "Secret Bonus Track". Kind of ruins the whole point doesn't it?
HahnSolo Jun 20 2006 12:34 PM |
I should know this but don't: Can't you just rename it in iTunes?
Willets Point Jun 20 2006 01:31 PM |
You can rename them. However, since it's a secret bonus track I don't know what title the artist intended for the song if any. It's just a difference of formats. On a CD you can hide a song at the end. On iTunes/iPod the song is labeled unironically as "Secret Bonus Track." More amusing than anything else.
sharpie Jun 20 2006 01:48 PM |
Then you can rename "Secret Bonus Track" whatever you think it should be. Much time can be spent thinking of just the right ironical name for each particular piece.
seawolf17 Jun 20 2006 01:50 PM |
Of course, it's usually pretty easy these days to figure out the names of the hidden bonus tracks just by poking around the Web.

Willets Point Aug 05 2006 02:39 PM |
Now you can use your iPod as a Magic 8 Ball. Put your iPod, iTunes, or MP3 player on shuffle and ask the following questions. Hit shuffle for each question and the song that plays is the answer to that question.
