So Metallica won't even sell their songs on iTunes? I also couldn't find Black by Sevendust. They only have like five songs total available.

Some groups just won't embrace the technology, mean while it might have a lot to do with the record companies...

]Apple in music
download price duel

Apple CEO Steve Jobs warns that raising the prices customers pay for downloading music could spur piracy.

Apple boss Steve Jobs vowed yesterday to repel "greedy" record companies' demands for higher music download prices, warning that any such move would encourage piracy.
Jobs, speaking before the opening of the Apple Expo in Paris, said some music majors were pushing for an increase in prices on Apple's online iTunes Music Store.

Apple's co-founder and CEO said record firms already earn more profit from songs sold through iTunes - cutting out costs of manufacturing, marketing and returns - than from those sold on CD.

"So if they want to raise the prices it just means they're getting a little greedy," he said.

As their contracts with Apple come up for renewal, music companies are seeking to improve their take from sales through the U.S. iTunes site, which charges 99 cents per song. Prices are typically higher in Europe, Japan and other regions.

Apple's iTunes accounts for 82% of legal downloads in the U.S. The company has sold more than 500 million songs online and about 22 million iPod digital music players.

Apple launched its Japanese iTunes site in August without Sony BMG's music catalogue, as negotiations dragged on. Observers say the same issues are likely to surface in talks between the two companies on their U.S. sales, and Warner Music Group also is reportedly seeking price increases.

Warner Music and Universal Music Group declined to comment. Sony BMG and EMI Group did not return calls.

Jobs intends to stand firm. "Customers think the price is really good where it is," he said. "If the price goes up a lot, they'll go back to piracy. Then everybody loses."

Industry analyst Philip Leigh, who runs market research firm Inside Digital Media, said record companies were smarting over their loss of control as online customers cherry-pick favorite hits.

But as long as Apple controls the market for music players and paid-for downloads, Leigh said, "it's going to be very difficult for the labels to avoid dealing with Steve Jobs on his terms."

Anyone have problems with iTunes 5.0? I downloaded and installed it twice
last week and it won't communicate with the actual iPod. I get a message
that it's not installed properly and to re-install it. VERY frustrating.

Elster88
Sep 22 2005 11:37 AM

Oh my god, I was about to break my iPod for that very reason....but the exact same thing was happening on my earlier version. I reinstalled like five times and then it randomly started working again.

We pitched in and got my mom an iPod for her birthday and they can't get it to work. I'm going to step in and see what I can see this weekend. More to come.

Bah, I downloaded and installed and re-installed and re-installed and
re-installed version 5.0.1.4 and get the same results.

I get the same message, "the software required for communicating with
the iPod is not installed correctly. Please re-install iTunes to install the
iPod's software"
.

My songs are on an external drive, so I can try my laptop instead - but my
inner-compulsive-neurotic-why isn't this working- we need a new computer-
self is just busting a gut.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Apple admits flaw with new nano iPod..

http://news.independent.co.uk/business/news/article315611.ece

]Apple admits problem with new iPod
By Caroline Gammell, PA
Published: 28 September 2005
The technology giant Apple admitted today there was a problem with its latest iPod product - but insisted the numbers affected by the flaw were minimal.

Complaints about the iPod nano surfaced on the internet with owners complaining about cracked screens and easily-scratched surfaces.

The iPod nano was launched with great fanfare earlier this month, billed as the music system which is thinner than a pencil.

Each iPod nano, on sale for £179, holds up to 1,000 songs or 25,000 photographs.

It was described as an "impossibly small size" which could fit into the smallest pocket.

But complaints about the product grew to such an extent that a website was set up by disgruntled owner Matthew Peterson entitled flawedmusicplayer.com.

He invited other iPod nano owners to air their views and posted pictures of cracked screens on the net.

Today Apple conceded that there had been a problem with the iPod nano but insisted it was not a design flaw.

Phil Schiller, from Apple, said: "This is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units.

"In fact, this issue has affected less than one tenth of 1% of the total iPod nano units that we've shipped. It is not a design issue."

He said any iPod nano owners who found their screens were cracked would get their music player replaced free of charge.

Referring to the alleged easy scratching, Mr Schiller said the product was made out of the same material as Apple's white fourth generation iPod which had received no complaints.

"We have received very few calls from customers reporting this problem - we do not think this is a widespread issue," he said.

"If customers are concerned about scratching, we suggest they use one of the many iPod nano cases to protect their iPod."

Mr Peterson posted a response on his flawedmusicplayer.com site welcoming Apple's stance.

He wrote: "I am very delighted to see Apple take this issue seriously. It is sad that it took a website and a lot of publicity before they finally investigated but at least future nano users with the same problem I had will not be subjected to the same treatment that I was.

"This was a real issue and most people tried to ignore it. I know a lot of people are going to complain that they still have to spend extra money on a case to prevent scratching.

"I guess I can handle using an iPod sock on my nano knowing that I can look at my screen and show someone a picture. Thank you Apple."

I still can't get the damn thing to work, and I don't want to use my laptop.
Anyone know anything about using an iPod with Linux? There's no iTunes,
but I was under the impression that it can use an iPod from features listed
on the box which I've thrown out. I'm being lazy and disgusted over this so
forgive me for asking questions I can probably google answers to.

KC
Oct 23 2005 12:34 PM

I really feel fucked by Apple. I finally got the damn thing to work on another
computer and have song authorization issues, battery problems, and Win-
dows conflicts. And what do you get from Apple on a daily basis? Ads with
nice color screens and shrunken cool looking new products while my in-
vestment in a monochrome discountinued piece of shit lies practically
useless on my desk. I'm doubly bitter because someone at work told
me to buy the stock or get some options when Apple was in the toilet
and he made a boat load of cash and I laughed at the thought at the time.
I really can't see spending another $70 to get a new battery either at this
point. My 5,200 songs are on an external drive and I think it's time to
just get another less expensive player and be done with the whole cluster
fuck of an experience.

A little sensitive; it gets knocked easily, unlike the iPod, but it's been pretty solid for me for two years now. Doesn't have the battery problems that the iPod does, and the 30 or 40 GB players cost a lot less than any of the Apple players. If you want something smaller, I bought my wife the 5 GB Micro, and it's pretty solid.

They came out with some newer versions, like the Touch, but I don't really know much about them. I suppose they're sturdier.

needin a reset is no big deal. it takes 10 seconds and thats it. and i didnt know it at the time, but my nano broke because my friend dropped it on concrete right on the corner where the hold button is. i had a mini before the nano and it never game me a single problem.

I've had my Mini since June, and I have a playlist question: if I create a playlist, can I control the order in which the songs are played? Each time I listen to a playlist, it seems the song order is random.
I want to put together something for a party (oh how the missus hates changing discs and tapes) and was hoping I could create a list and have it play in the order I want.

You should be able to: We deejayed our wedding with an ipod (I'd have preferred, as things turned out, to have iTuned it off a laptop, since it crossfades and ipod doesn't. But what's done is done).

Anyway, you oughta be able to find a way to turn off random in preferences, unless that's one of the features the regular old iPod has and the mini doesn;t. Just keep hitting buttons and you'll find it.

No Beatles, Zeppelin or AC/DC on iTunes.

I was looking for AC/DC and one thing they have is this tribute album:

Now, I only sampled each track but I believe it to be worse than bad.

It's all acoustic and its all chicks.

It's so bad that its funny. It's almost like William Shatner singing Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

It could be called 'AC/DC as Sung in a Coffee Shop by Militant Lesbians'.

In my attempts to find AC/DC on iTunes, I stumbled across Hayseed Dixie, a country-pickin AC/DC tribute act. Since the glory days of Dread Zeppelin, I've found gimmicky recontextualizing tribute acts to be obvious and unfunny at worst, and bedeviled by a short shelf life at best. But I've enjoyed these guys, built around the notion that Hank Williams' "Lost Highway" and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" are the same road. The vocalist sings as if he's down to his last three teeth, and they sound just as terrifically stupid as the songs they cover.

Nonetheless smart enough to realize the short shelf life of such bands, they followed their AC/DC tribute efforts up with albums that also include other big dumb rawk classics --- "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "The Ace of Spades," for instance --- as well as awful originals that always seem to be built around references to poop.

Feb 08 2006 07:55 AM

I find it easier to deal when it's a really good band that sticks up their collective nose at iTunes. I can just buy the CD and most of the tracks are good.

It's the relatively crappy bands who have written one or two songs that I like...with them I'm stuck. I used to have a disorder for buying CDs because I liked one song.

As a matter of fact, I do. I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-EX81 in-ear headphones, and I think they're pretty damn good. I got them on sale for around $50 at RadioShack. I've also heard good things about the MDR-EX71's, which I think are cheaper.

They're in-ear, which I kind of like--blocks out some of the extraneous noise on the subway--but they may not be your cup of tea. Check out http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/review_grades/C79/ for a pretty extensive list of headphone reviews.

I had the Sony EX-71 phones for a couple years, and liked them fine until the right one died.

http://playlistmag.com/products/complete/36-detail.php

They go in your ear differently than the stock earphones... you gotta play with em for a few minutes when you first try them to get the seal right. After that it becomes second nature. They're nice becasue they block a lot of ambient noise without any extra noise cancellation nonsense. They also have the option of a short cord which is perfect, if you use the ipod's remote.

I recently upgraded to the Shure e2c phones and they are amazing. They took a lot more experimentation to get them to fit in my ears though.

Picked these up yesterday, 2 questions:
--Why the F doesn't the extension jack fit snugly? Unless you're completely delicate with it you'll lose one channel.

--What's the logic behind there being 1 ear peice with a shorter cord than the other? It seems to want to force you to place your device in your right pocket, which can be a pain if you prefer to put your bag on the right side like me.

Huh. I have the 81, and thought I was the only one with a shorter cord on the ear piece. I figured it was a manufacturer defect and didn't care enough to get off my ass and return it.

If it's planned, it makes no sense to me at all.

Not sure about the extension jack--or what an extension jack is. My headphones plug in fine, although for the first 2 days of having my iPod, I didn't push in the plug far enough and was all "Why the hell is the sound so soft? Am I going deaf?"

I've had these for about 4 months and they are wonderful. If you play a live album it's like you're at the concert.

Expensive ($300.00 but you get a free portable Bose cd player with them) and I don't recommend walking around with them as the reverberration of your heels hitting the ground is unnerving (as is crunching Fritos), but if you commute (as I, and the guy in the picture on the website, do) and find yourself sitting for hours at a time with no need to speak to anyone or hear anything else - they are perfect.

Methead
Mar 07 2006 09:43 AM

Hmm... I never used the extension jack, since I had the ipod remote instead. Not sure I can help you there, they could be defective.

As for 1 ear peice with a shorter cord than the other, it's designed so the one with the longer cord goes around the back of your neck. That way, when you remove them from your ears, they hang on your neck just like any other set of 'phones. It's a feature I actually liked. I carry my bag on the right side too, and I'm pretty sure I had the shorter cord in my left ear, and the long one in my right.

Johnny Dickshot
Mar 07 2006 09:46 AM

I get it now. They're designed to go behind the neck, not in front.

This way, the device can go on your left side.

Looks like the model comes either in a short-cord (extendable) or single long cord configuration and I got the former without realizing it. Don't see how I'd use the short cord effectively and like I said the extension peice fits strangely (not completely snug).

Am I crazy, or is the sound actually better that way? Maybe the left one just fits better in your ear when you do that . . .

Methead
Mar 08 2006 01:56 PM

The sound really depends on the quality of the fit in your ear. It's possible you're getting a better seal, now that the weight of the cord isn't trying to pull the plugs out of your ears.

i picked up a pair of the sony in-ear plugs, and i like them but i have minor issues. i like to listen to music during lunch, and the in-ear style really makes the sounds of crunching and chewing rattle my skull.

also they are almost dangerously effective when i am out and about, i cant hear a thing except the ipod. this is obviously a great feature, but still, it makes me a little nervous about my surroundings. i definitely keep my eyes open wider with em in.

but anyways, i like em, because i used to have to turn the old ones up so loud to hear my podcasts (the ricky gervais one is fantastic), but now i can hear everything clearly at a less ear-destroying volume.

Well, it's official: I hate these headphones. The extension attatchment is ridiculous, the shit doesn't stay in my ears, and I don;t see the great advantage to behind the head (or disadvantage either, I will add).

Went to exchange them for the model that clips to the ear, and of course they're out of stock.

I can't stand earbuds so I just use a set of regular headphones I got for 3 for $10 at Radio Shack (I tend to break headphones so I'm not shilling out more for anything fancier).

I had this problem once before and fixed it, but now don't remember how I did it.

All the songs I've bought on iTunes are now not playing on my iPod. I thought that all I had to do was download the latest version of iTunes. I did that, and it didn't work.

Anybody know what to do?

I'm like Willets, earbuds bug me. Have a cheap set of headphones I like just fine. For a while I was using a set I got for free from American Airlines. They were pretty good.

Are they all 'checked' in your iTunes?

Do you have manual or automatic update selected?

Thanks. I've solved the problem, I think. I downloaded the latest iPod updater, and have the most updated iTunes. So things are working.

For your second question, I don't know. I would assume I'd want automatic, right? How would I check?

Automatic is what you want. If you have it set to manual it will only upload those songs that are checked.

With your iPod connected and selected in your iTunes go to 'Edit', 'Preferences', 'iPod'. Under the 'Music' tab select 'Automatically update all songs and playlists'.

Done.

I wonder what would be Jane Jarvis' reaction if she knew her rendition of "Meet The Mets" on the Hammond organ along with the original, instrumental and the 80's Remix of Meet The Mets, is currently on my iPod!

All four tracks on a give-a-way day at Shea CD, I forget the year, probably late 90's-early 00's

Not your iPod, but iPods in general.

soupcan

Sure you can delete songs. You have to delete them from your iTunes first, then sync up your iPod. Your iPod will mirror exactly what is in your iTunes so if a song is deleted from iTunes it won't show up on your 'Pod.

$20 please.

I've been spending a dollar a song on iTunes. But my buddy yelled at me and mentioned a site he subscribes to where you get any song you want for a $50 yearly subscription fee. I figure I'll probably download 50 or slightly more songs a year so it sounds like a good deal to me.

What do you use?

Johnny Dickshot
May 05 2006 08:06 AM

Isn't the deal with those services that you must continue to pay for the service no matter how many songs you buy and when you cancel you can't hear them anymore?

Buy your rock n roll, don't rent it. And 99 cents was what I paid for 45-rpm single THIRTY YEARS AGO. It's a goddamned bargain.

BTW, the Coinstar change-counter at my local Key Food will give you a store-credit coupon minus 7% ... or FACE VALUE in an iTunes gift card.

Easy choice as far as I'm concerned.

Elster88
May 05 2006 08:51 AM

From what he was telling me, you download and keep the MP3 just like with iTunes. Then you put it on your iPod or a CD or your hard drive or whatever. I could be wrong.

Rockin' Doc
May 07 2006 07:47 PM

But if I find a place that says: "Here's a yearly subscription fee and you keep the music permanently", then I'm going to make the switch.

Apple introduces the new U2 iPod

By AppleInsider Staff

Published: 08:00 AM EST
Apple on Tuesday introduced a new version of its U2 Special Edition iPod as part of a continued partnership between Apple, U2 and Universal Music Group (UMG).

The new U2 iPod is based on the company's fifth-generation 30GB iPod and holds up to 7,500 songs, 25,000 photos or over 75 hours of video. It features a distinctive, all-black stainless steel enclosure, red Click Wheel and custom engraving of U2 band member signatures.

U2 iPod adopters will also receive 30 minutes of exclusive U2 video downloadable from the iTunes Music Store, Apple said. The new iPod is available immediately for $329.

"We're thrilled to continue working with one of the greatest bands in the world to bring U2 fans a special edition of the world's best digital music player," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPod Product Marketing. "With its distinctive new design, including an all-black stainless steel enclosure, the new U2 iPod is sure to be a hit."

The new U2 iPod features Apple's patent-pending Auto-Sync technology that automatically downloads digital music, podcasts, photos, audiobooks, home movies, music videos and popular television shows onto the iPod and keeps them up-to-date whenever the iPod is plugged into a Mac or Windows computer using USB 2.0. The new U2 iPod features up to 14 hours of battery life for music playback.

Pricing & Availability

The new 30GB U2 iPod is available immediately for a suggested retail price of $329 (US) through the Apple Store, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. Each player includes earbud headphones, USB 2.0 cable, a case and dock insert. U2 iPod customers will also receive a coupon for 30 minutes of exclusive U2 video content downloadable from the iTunes Music Store.

If you import a CD that has a secret bonus track, it shows up in iTunes as "Secret Bonus Track". Kind of ruins the whole point doesn't it?

HahnSolo
Jun 20 2006 12:34 PM

I should know this but don't: Can't you just rename it in iTunes?

Willets Point
Jun 20 2006 01:31 PM

You can rename them. However, since it's a secret bonus track I don't know what title the artist intended for the song if any. It's just a difference of formats. On a CD you can hide a song at the end. On iTunes/iPod the song is labeled unironically as "Secret Bonus Track." More amusing than anything else.

sharpie
Jun 20 2006 01:48 PM

Then you can rename "Secret Bonus Track" whatever you think it should be. Much time can be spent thinking of just the right ironical name for each particular piece.

Of course, it's usually pretty easy these days to figure out the names of the hidden bonus tracks just by poking around the Web.

Moving Music

To a New Computer

Q. How can I move my iTunes music from my old Mac to my new PC?

A. Music collections tend to far outlive — and outgrow — the computers they're stored on. Built-in programs like the Windows Files and Settings Transfer Wizard or the Mac OS X Setup Assistant can shift music files from the old machine to the new one on the same operating system over a cable connection, but it is slightly more complicated to make a move from a Mac to a PC or vice versa.

By default, Apple's iTunes music jukebox program stores all the computer's digital audio files in the iTunes folder on the hard drive. On a Mac, you can find this folder in the Music folder of your Home directory; on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, look inside the My Documents folder for the My Music folder to find the iTunes folder.

Before you make the move, however, make sure all your songs are in one place by going to the Advanced menu in iTunes and choosing the Consolidate Library option.

Once you get a copy of iTunes for Windows installed on the PC (free to download from www.apple.com/itunes), one fairly simple way to move all those songs from the Mac to the PC is to copy the entire iTunes folder onto an external hard drive or over a network from the old Mac to the new PC. Put this copy of the iTunes folder in the exact same place where iTunes for Windows stores it. You may have to delete the existing iTunes folder on the PC — which will be empty anyway. Once you start up the iTunes program on the PC, your songs should be waiting for you.

While Mac OS X can recognize iPods formatted for Windows, Windows does not recognize Mac-formatted iPods without third-party software, like XPlay from Mediafour. This means if you formatted your iPod for Macintosh, you will need to reformat it for Windows so the PC will acknowledge its existence.

To do that, download the iPod software for Windows (www.apple.com/ipod/download), connect your iPod to the PC and follow the on-screen instructions. Reformatting the iPod erases all the songs on it, but you can reload them from your transplanted iTunes library once Windows welcomes the converted iPod.

Willets Point
Aug 05 2006 02:39 PM

Now you can use your iPod as a Magic 8 Ball. Put your iPod, iTunes, or MP3 player on shuffle and ask the following questions. Hit shuffle for each question and the song that plays is the answer to that question.

I'm having troubles. I can't download any music.

I try and download one song and I get the message:

"The availability of the item changed while you were using the store. The same item may be available with a different price or elsewhere in the store."
I try a different song and I get:

"This item is being modified. Please try again later."
Another item is only available in the British version of iTunes or something.

All more or less plausible excuses, except the entire store is stonewalling me.

They must have got word that you're one of the elitist from the CPF.

Seriously, that sucks. I don't use itunes, so I can't be of any help. It's likely a minor issue that one of the experienced ipod/itune users can help you sort out.

If all else fails, e-mail the support people for itunes. When I got my mp3 player last Christmas, I initially had problems downloading music. A quick e-mail to the support people and they helped me rectify a software problem. They had me downloading music in no time.
