Seawolf's Connecticut Travel Ramblings

Some things I noticed on my first week through CT...

** Do not just pass the Duchess on the left-hand side. 62 is right; you need to stop and get a chili dog. Thumbs up. (See the A/A spinoff thread if you're confused.)
** I like passing the exit for Black Rock Turnpike on I-95, because it makes me laugh, picturing the big pirate ship from Lost sitting on the side of the road somewhere.
** There's a maternity store in Fairfield called "Belle," with a long-vowel sound line over the final "e", making the pronounciation "belly." Creative.
** Coming off I-84 into Ridgefield, there's a yellow diamond road sign featuring a silhouette of E.T. -- with finger raised -- wearing a seat belt. I wish I had a camera phone.
** There's a store called "Bob's Unpainted Furniture & Gun Exchange" on Boston Post Road in Darien.

Do you have any NJ travels planned?

I could show you the monument to the War of the Worlds invasion that never really happened. Let's see Connecticut top that!

Glad you liked it.
Are we to guess that you,.... ,uh, wolfed it down?

Durham, is the home of the NC School of Math and Science for gifted juniors and seniors from around the state. When driving on I-85, you will see the big green exit sign declaring:

NC School of Science and Math
Guess Road

Hells yeah, I wolfed it down. Yum.

What's with the $219 fine for littering? How did they come up with that number? Weird.

Everything they do is weird. :)

The Carpool lane violation fine in California is a robust $271

The Crane Pool lane violation is pretty steep also.

If you're gonna get a chili dog, take that Black Rock Turnpike exit off 95 and go to Super Duper Weenie.

That's good eatin'.

Yes! I knew there was something I forgot. I saw that billboard the other day and almost drove off the road.

Swanky Franks in Norwalk is pretty good, too.

There is no better hot dog/ hamburger stand along the shoreline than Paul's in Milford...

Sep 27 2005 09:15 AM

I'll have to give Paul's a try.

Both excellent choices. I love Duchess. Everything there is good.

Ever pass the Motel Hi-Ho on the Merrit Parkway? That always gives me a laugh.

It used to be owned by a guy named DiDario - big in construction in Connecticut. Folks would say "Hi Ho DiDario", so he named the place that way.
Trivia: He also used to own a minor league football team in Bridgeport - I think they were called the Jets.

There's Swanky Franks in Westport as well.

Also try Rawley's on the Post Road in Fairfield for a good dog or cheeseburger.

Elster88
Sep 27 2005 12:00 PM

I've never been to the one in Westport though I've driven by numerous times. Is it owned by the same guy?

I think it is.

When it first opened they had people working there that also worked at the one in Norwalk.

I was behind a guy in line who paid for his food with a hundred dollar bill. The cashier chick says to the guy 'Geez, we don't get hundred dollar bills in Norwalk'.

Pepe's is in New Haven, and about ten years ago or it was in the news for having the best pizza in the country. I've never been but have planned to go for a while.

Soup - I've tried Rawley's.... they're OK, but Super Duper rocks their world.

In my humble opinion, of course.

As for Pepe's, they're supposed to be opening one in Black Rock any day now. Hopefully the pizza will compare to the original in New Haven.

Elster88
Sep 27 2005 01:00 PM

Is it really that good?

Yeah, Super Duper Weenie is pretty effin' good. The owner is a pretty nice guy as well.

Before he was at his present location he just had a truck that he would park behind that gazebo thingy in the park on the Post Road next to the Kinko's. We used to get dogs from him there.

Elster88
Sep 27 2005 01:39 PM

I was actually asking about Pepe's, but I'll check out Super Duper too.

If you can't get into Pepe's, there is also Sally's, a little farther down the block...

Next time you're in Pomfret, CT, stop in the Vanilla Bean Cafe. Pricey for a cafe, but oh, so good. Sandwiches, chili, soups, etc. Good ol' down home New England cookin'.

MFS62
Sep 29 2005 02:25 PM

Gee, Wolf, Pomfret?
I've lived in the state for almost 30 years, and that one was a new one for me. I had to look up a map to see if its worth the travel.
I don't care how good it might be. It isn't. :)
But if I'm ever in the area............

From Cranepool's resident semi-Nutmegger (that's where my parents are from), I will say that Pepe's pizza is simply otherworldly good.

That fella in Midwood who makes all the pizzas himself is the only one who compares.

Okay. Another week, another list of "huh"s:

* What is with the bizarre string of pizza places with "Apizza" in the name of the store? Is that some bizarre fake Italian accent thing? I saw four or five different places, like "Tony's Apizza" and "Vinny's Apizza." Bizarre.
* Saw another one of the ET seat belt signs, outside Branford High School. I'm throwing my camera in the car next week, in case I run into another one somewhere.
* Why is there an Iwo Jima monument in New Britain? It's right on the side of Route 9, just south of 84.

Missed out on what might have been a neat opportunity today. I was eating breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express this morning, and as I was finishing up my last bit of coffee, seven or eight older guys came in, a couple of whom were wearing "Bobby Bonds Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic 2004" polo shirts. It didn't hit me until after I left that they might have been old ballplayers -- several of them looked really familiar, although no names immediately came to mind. I wish I wasn't rushing out to a high school; I could have eavesdropped a little longer. I'll find out when the 2006 tournament is, and try to schedule visits so I can listen in next year.

MFS62

Wolf,
"Apizza" is aparently a way of saying "pizza" that is found in some very Italian areas of Connecticut - near New Haven.
Consider it local dialect. But its not a chain.

Have no answers to the other things you mentioned.

Three words:

Super. Duper. Weenie.

Hells yeah. Thanks, all, for the tip. I think I'll be back later this week.

Finding cleverness in mock Italian accents is fine --- if you're Chico Marx.

We walked into some faux-Italian eatery our friends were just raving about to be greeted by a sign that said "Parka your car?"

Cha looked at me with a raised brow and said "Leava your restaurant?"

We drove on silently and hungrily, each of us thinking "Finda yourself new friends?"

What did you get, seawolf? I usually go with the California dog. And fries, of course.

seawolf17
Nov 09 2005 01:23 PM

Just a dog with chili and sauerkraut; I was in a rush to catch the ferry so I didn't have time to get too crazy.

At the Connecticut Commons in Plainville, there is a Lowe's (the hardware store) and a Loews (the movie theater), which makes the big sign as you come off I-84 look really weird.

Got gas for $2.06 a gallon yesterday all the way up in Ellington.
