Met Wrecks

Sorry for the macbre thread topic. Feel free to ignore, but I was thinking today about Mets who've had their careers interrupted --- or ended, or their lives --- in vehicular wrecks. I guess New Year's puts me in mind of Danny Frisella.

I'm sure I'm overlooking several, perhaps some obvious ones. On the other hand, it's certainly not a list I'm hoping to add folks to.

Mets Minor Leaguers

1967Bob JohnsonWilliamsportMotorcycleMangled legTwo doctors recommended amputation of at least part of the leg. Johnson and his leg would survive. He would later attribute a premature end to a disappointing career at least in part to alcohol abuse.
1968Jack TracyJacksonvilleCarNear-death traumaThe day before Tug McGraw's first wedding, career minor-leaguer Tracy borrowed Kevin Collin's Camaro from McGraw --- to whom Collins had entrusted it during his callup to the Mets --- following a poor game for the second baseman. Tracy would slam into the back of a stalled car later that night. McGraw was berated for his bad judgment and would never again be close with Collins. Tracy's career would end in 1970 with 431 appearances in AAA, but none in the majors.
4/1/2001Brian ColeBinghamtonCarCole's deathCole was generally considered the number-two prospect in the Mets' system at the time. He was driving his Ford Explorer home after spring training, planning to fly from there to join his teammates in Binghamton, but rolled the SUV while he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. His cousin, a passenger in the car, was belted in and survived.

It was the night before the trading deadline and the Mets quickly dealt outfielder Xavier Nady for pitchers Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez to help out the pitching staff.

5/6/1991Lenny DykstraPhiladelphiaCarBroken ribs, collarbone, cheekbone; punctured lungDystra was driving drunk after a bachelor party, with Darren Daulton as a passenger, and wrapped the car around a tree. Both players had had excellent seasons the year before. Dykstra would miss two months and Daulton three and half weeks.
3/22/1993Bob OjedaClevelandBoatMajor head lacerationsOjeda was the lone survivor of an accident that took the lives of teammates Steve Olin and Tim Crews when the boat, piloted by Crews, struck a pier. His survival was attributed to the being on the lower side of the boat as it angled into a turn. He sat out most of the following season and would never pitch effectively again.
3/1/2002Jeff KentSan FranciscoMotorcycleBroken wristKent lied and claimed he hurt himself washing his car. He had not only been driving his motorcycle --- reportedly in direct violation of his contract --- but had been showing off, doing wheelies and other stunts.
10/11/2006Cory LidleYankeesPrivate airplaneLidle's deathLidle's single-engine Cirrus Design SR20 crashed into an apartment building on the Upper East Side of New York shortly after the Yankees were defeated in a post-season series by the Detroit Tigers. Lidle had been under harsh criticism in the days before the accident for suggesting that the Yankees weren't quite prepared for how well their oppenents had played. The investigation couldn't conclude whether the Lidle or his flyig instructor (who was also killed) was at the stick at the time of the accident.

Righty Bob Miller was killed in a car wreck. Jerry May was crushed to death on his Virginia farm trying to repair a piece of heavy duty farm equipment.

And Randy Bobb also died in a car wreck. Never played with the Mets. He appears on a 1971 Topps rookie card with Tim Foli.

Re: Met Wrecks

Found some info on these three deaths:

Bob Miller from Wikipedia:
He was the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants in 1985, but after the team ended the season with 99 losses, the team fired the entire coaching staff, offering Miller a position as pitching coach with the team's top minor league affiliates. Miller spent time as a scout, evaluating prospective pitchers for the Giants.

Miller, then an advance scout for the Giants, died of injuries sustained in a collision with another car in Rancho Bernardo, California. He was driving with his mother, who was left in serious condition from the accident.

Randy Bobb from Wikipedia:
Bobb was again called up to the majors in September 1969 as the Cubs were undergoing an historic collapse that would see them lose the division title to the New York Mets. Bobb appeared in three games, going 0-for-2 at the plate. Before the 1970 season, the Cubs traded him to the Mets for 32-year-old catcher J.C. Martin, who would go on to be the Cubs' backup backstop for the next three years. Despite just being 21 years of age, Bobb never returned to the major leagues.

Bobb died June 13, 1982 in Carnelian Bay, California of a ruptured aorta following a car accident.

parts of Jerry May's June 30, 1996, NY Times obit:
May, 52, was killed when a rotary brush cutter fell on him at his Augusta County farm. May had jacked up the brush cutter to remove some wire that had become entangled in the blades...A small hydraulic jack slipped while May was working under the machine, and it fell on his neck and chest.

Similar to Mark Fidrych's death. I also found it interesting that Jerry May caught Dock Elllis' infamous LSD no hitter. He was the catcher that used colored tape on his fingers so Ellis could read the signs. Both part time Mets, the pitching battery for a famous no hitter, both died young.

Re: Met Wrecks

Yeah, but I tried to limit it to guys who had thier careers interrupted. I had understood that Nino Espinosa died in a wreck, but his wikipedia page says heart attack.

Sorry, my mistake. Feel free to delete.

Espinosa retired in '81. Wouldn't have fit your criteria anyway.

Re: Met Wrecks

I hadn't known or hadn't recalled that former farmhand Luz Portobanco crashed and died in 2008. Portobanco started the first ever game for the Brooklyn Cyclones. He was excellent for the team that year. Though he only won five games, he was 3-0, 0.53 ERA against the Staten Island Yankees, which makes me right there want to include him on next year's Mets Hall of Fame ballot.
