Both halves of that are positive as far as I'm concerned (with the usual caveat of the price for Bay not being too high)

It's also a lot more info than I expected.
Even considering that nothing he said is fact at this point, I didn't even expect it to be anything about players. All of which leads me to wonder how and where he got his info and why he felt so confident sitting on it for nearly 24 hours. What it adds up to, IMO, is a bone thrown to him by Omar personally.

The Mets have reached a deal to bring All-Star outfielder Jason Bay to New York pending a physical, SI.com confirmed.
The news was first repoprted by Mike Francesa of WFAN, who added that the announcement will come early next wee

A bunch of media outlets are now reporting this as well, but always, it seems, with the "according to WFAN" caveat. (Heyman's tweet may be the first exception to that.)

The interesting part is how he was so confident that the agent/player half of the deal wasn't going to leak things out.

And now Heyman, who works for WFAN as well as SI, is confirming the story while crediting Big Mike & FAN (which only goes to show that he doesn't work for ESPN who'll take credit for almost anything since the Lindy landing). The almost instant timing of Heyman's story indicates that he was sitting on this for whatever reason.

I'm finding the machinations of this story almost as interesting as the info itself.

North Jersey.com

The Mets have reached an agreement with free-agent outfielder Jason Bay, WFAN host Mike Francesa said on his radio show Tuesday afternoon. The New York Post reported that the deal is for four years and $66 million with a vesting option for a fifth year.
Bay would have to pass a physical before the deal is complete. With offices closed for the holiday week, an announcement isn't expected until sometime next week.

Re: mets news at 2pm: Fatcessa

Yeah, he's being overpaid but perhaps not horribly so. He may be tradeable in year three or four if the Mets come across a younger cheaper option.

Now they need to get a starting pitcher or two. My guess is they'll turn their attention to Piniero now. (The other possibility is that they renew their efforts to trade Castillo and sign Hudson. I prefer the pitching scenario.)

Flushing, NY (AP) -- The New York Mets have placed outfielder Jason Bay on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hip flexor. Bay, who only a few hours earlier had agreed to a four-year, $66 million contract with the team, injured the hip holding the elevator for general manager Omar Minaya after their contract meeting.

"It's certainly a disappointment," Bay said through his agent. "But I'm hoping that the surgery goes well, and I should be back on the field in time for the 2011 season."

Minaya was not concerned. "It's certainly not what you want to see out of a guy you just signed, but we'll have our doctors take a look at it, and I'm sure Jason will be healthy soon."

Minaya also noted that the Mets signed 46-year-old lefthanded pitcher Terry Mulholland, who hasn't pitched since 2006, to a guaranteed one-year deal.

Thirty-eight, which has been a festival of failure and injury since Skip Lockwood first got hurt 30 years ago, is now the property of the rehabbing Fernando Nieve.

Wearing forty-four as an outfielder is really challenging fate, but I spoke recently with the number, and it says it would love to hop on Bay's back, and get the Tim Reddiing vibe out of its system.

Like FK, I am fascinated that how this news unfolded. How did Francesa scoop everyone else? And how could he be so confident that he sat on the news for 24 hours. This is just mind-boggling. I would love to hear an explanation on this. Kudos to Mike for actually having news after that kind of hype. If this were "the Mets are adding a wing to CitiField", it would have been lamer than lame.

I'm glad they brought in Bay. He looks like a good hitter. Although at that price, and for 5 years (after the vest) I would have preferred Holliday, but it is what it is.

But meanwhile they still offered him 4 years at $60 mil.

MM: The Mets do not want to embarrass themselves by confirming a deal then having to back away should Bay not pass the physical <<<

It's subtle cracks like this that just grind my goat horns.

Why not just come out and say it ... after many seasons ending in disaster,
a pissed off fan base, the beloved Yankees World Championship, ownership
that often looks stoopid, front office scandals, an injury riddled team that
needs a serious medical staff upgrade, a stadium that belongs in Brooklyn,
Pete Flynn's dandruff problem, etc. the Mets simply can't afford to crap the
bed on this one where other teams would announce the signing and leap willy
nilly into a four-five year deal with just a few wind sprints to see if he can
actually breathe and run at the same time.

[quote="Valadius"][quote="Edgy DC"]There have been six Maple Leaf Mets, but none since 1973, if'n' you believe that nonsense.

The last was Brian Ostrosser --- 0-5 in 1973. Canada's overdue to contribute to the great cause.

You're kidding me. Seems like there should be more, right?

David Waldstein reads the Pool.

Or at least (and more likely) the UMDB.

Re: mets news at 2pm: Fatcessa

As per Cerrone:

Host Mike Francesa ended his show on WFAN last Tuesday saying he would soon have a ‘Mets update,’ and he later broke news that the Mets and Jason Bay had agreed to a four-year deal.

Today, Francesa is at it again, opening his show by saying, “I think you’ll be getting some more Mets news here later in the week, but we’ll get to that later in the show… Jason Bay press conference is tomorrow, but there’s more to come.”

Either pitching's comin', or Eli's comin'. Either way, I yams nervouses.

Francesa must give some great head to know that his source will keep things quiet until he's ready to break it.

The source almost has to be Omar or Jeff Wilpon to have that degree of certainty doesnt it?

Re: mets news at 2pm: Fatcessa

Not listening; no additional posts from the usual suspects. Close reading of the Metsblog bid'ness hints that the real news will come in a day or so. If it's a personnel move, the timing has to mean it's a FA signing, doesn't it? (Trade announcements seem to be a good deal less deliberate.)

This Francesa-as-mouthpiece thing seems more and more like a deliberate NY-paper-shunning campaign. (Lord knows the organization's got motive, in light of all the failed-team/failed-GM/failed-owner writing during the last 3-6 months.)

I haven't listened to Francesa since 2005. Has he really been friendlier to the Mets than the local papers have been?

He's more or less the same guy you remember, minus a braying Russo. He sprays it on everyone, though.

But compared to the Rubin Sunday-Snooze piece and other organizational dissections last year, along with the various and sundry Madoff stuff (which had to sting the Wilpons a bit more than the usual "these guys are out of touch/cheap" crit)? His shtick comes off like that-- well-meaning shtick.

Mainly he just appears to be on good terms with Omar. He both has him on the show for chats at regular intervals and cites him often as a direct source; "... as for a deal at the trade deadline, I talked to Omar the other day and he said ..."

The natural assumption here is that Omar appears to be feeding MF scoops of late as a return favor for not joining in the 'Fire Omar Yesterday!!' chorus over the last six months or so. Francesa mostly took the stand last summer that no one and no team could survive the injury onslaught of the '09 Mets and therefore breaks are deserved.

The odd part to me - as I said earlier in this thread - is that Mike seems to be un-naturally confident that these news goodies he's been getting won't leak out from any other source during the time he's teasing them.

Re: mets news at 2pm: Fatcessa

Francesa is friendly to the Mets in the way Biff was friendly to George McFly in Back to the Future. Jeff Wilpon seems to have decided he is the most effective megaphone/loudest voice available, and maybe Mike'll be nice to us if we feed him info. They only acted on the Doc autographed wall kerfuffle last April once Mike decreed it was the right thing to do.

FWIW, Francesa couldn't be more condescending toward the Jets either.

Doc Gooden or Doc Brown? I'm so confused.

I heard Mike interview Bay yesterday. He came across as a good guy.
BUT - he may have broken basketball player Adrian (Odie) Smith's* world record for the most "You know" -s in a twenty minute period.

Later

*= I heard the Smith interview and I got a tic from the repetition of "you know". I made up the part about the world's record, in case anyone would ask me for a link.
