Our two runoff candidates and the third-party entrant who missed the cut all had their moments with substances not quite kosher. Gary Carter didn't sniff anything stronger than Northville Gasoline fumes and received no support.

Gary had a great year, a good year, an okay year, and two bad years as a Met.

That's not player-of-the-decade material, and it's not retired number material. As I look at his Mets numbers I can see why he has an Expos cap on his Cooperstown plaque.

I posted quite a few rants here against the absurd idea that Carter's Met # should be retired. He would never again be an impact player after 1986, his second Met year, and in fact, deteriorated so rapidly after that championship season (as many catchers suddenly do in their early 30's) that with hindsight, one could argue that he shouldn't have even been starting anymore by the middle of the 1987 season

There are degrees of likability at play here, I think. That is to say, GC was-- and is-- a "schmuck" (annoyingly 'pure' and proud-- to the point of lecturing others-- about it, lacking in political/finer social skills and self-awareness, forever wondering/whining about why people don't like him) where Keith or Kong are more "prick" (yes, he'll screw your girlfriend/wreck your borrowed car/send you a dead rat in a box, but he'll let you kick his ass for it, then you'll share a scotch and a crossword). [I'll further stipulate: Straw was a dick-swinging, preening "cock"; Dykstra a comic asshole-- for a time, anyway-- and Gooden more of a tragic strain of "asshole" (though his kids might tell it differently). It's science.]

Dykstra was probably always intolerable. If he worked in your office, you'd only see him at the water cooler, alternating between making time with the thin women, snickering at the not-so-thin, and bragging to the men about his business/sexual conquests. He'd make you avoid the breakroom. Carter would be relatively tolerable. He can scratch his head all he wants about why he doesn't make vice president. You know he'd still do the work --- probably treat his underlings well --- and move on when he didn't get what he was certain he had coming.

Oh, 80s-Lenny's not someone you'd ever choose to hang out with (unless you either had a moderate-to-severe drinking problem or were a party-schnauzer in a Hawaiian shirt), but I'd wager that you'd probably find him somewhat amusing, as long as he was kept at arm's length. Carter would TOTALLY be a hovering boss. I'd constantly be lying to GC about weekend plans, just so I wouldn't have to attend his terrible Halloween/Christmas/New Year's/Oscar/St. Patrick's parties. And sure, I'd probably avoid a Nails-infested breakroom (if for nothing else but chaw stains alone). But hell-- if the mid-80s Met clubhouse were my office, I'm pretty sure I'd eat, smoke, and urinate at my desk.
