Gary, Keith, and Ron... and?

As per Klapisch in today's Record:

David Cone: Say YES. It appears Cone’s short but brilliant run in the YES broadcast booth may be over. Sources say Cone is out after a heated disagreement with network executives. A spokesman confirmed via e-mail: “David’s contract is up. We’d love to have him back, but he’s in the process of evaluating his various options. … He may not be back based on what he decides.” Cone’s skill and confidence grew appreciably in the past year. Like former-Met teammate Ron Darling, he had a graceful way of explaining baseball to casual fans, but also was immersed in cutting edge sabermetrics.

Michael Kay said, “I’d come into the booth five hours before a game and Coney would already be there, buried in the computer, looking up stats. He took it very seriously.”

If this is true... I would cut off a fingertip* to see him displace Bobby O in the Snigh post- and pregame shows. Kay's about right-- in the few MFY games I actually caught, Cone's analysis was like that of a stathead Ronnie. He broke down pitching mechanics nicely AND brought up stuff on-air like FIP(!). Miles beyond the nightly jock-metaphysics/chemistry class we get nightly from Carlin and Ojeda.

Anyone else you'd like to see in the SNY stable? Why?

*Not really.

I miss greasy fuck* Lee Mazzilli. I thought he was at least trying to engage the viewer, moreso than Bobby "Vanilla" O.

*said for comic effect only

Re: Gary, Keith, and Ron... and?

I'd like to mix in a few non-mid-80s-white Mets for the jock angle.

What'd be wrong with offering any of the following guys a shot?

Rey Ordonez
Rick White
Masato Yoshii
Doug Flynn
Elliott Maddox
Wally Whitehurst
Hubie Brooks
Joel Youngblood
Benny Agbayani

I get to see very little non-game action, but Mazz won me the day he grouchily defended Joe Frazier.

I think we'd know more about what these pre-game guys had if they were given keys to the booth on the days Keith or Ron were out.

And he lost me the day he "engaged" (thanks for the word, Fman) the first base umpire and changed a pro-Mets moment to a pro- Yankees moment.

As for Cone, I don't know if he will still have the same effect on the viewing audience since the bullpen fences at CitiFiled are higher than those at Shea.

I'd love to see and hear from Flynnie.

Also:
Ron Swoboda
Jeff Innis
Kevin Collins
Keith Miller
Felix Millan

Re: Gary, Keith, and Ron... and?

Swoboda at least has done TV work in the past - but, at last report, was still a full-time resident of N'Orlins.

Jeff Innis is supposedly a very funny guy and might be good on that basis alone. Marty Noble used to add an "Innis in the Morning" quote to all his spring training reports detailing the reliever's best quips and one-liners from the previous day.

Not quite sure what Felix Millan would bring to the table except maybe a list of reasons why getting dumped on your head is a bad thing for your career.

I'd be curious-- and a little apprenhensive-- to see what Turk could do with a semi-regular TV gig. Or a deer carcass.

Also, it may be too soon, but I'd like to see what Delgado's got, broadcast-chops-wise.

Indeed.

I had no idea about his legal travails... there's a man who has some stories.

What? You wouldn't tune in to hear what he said?

I would. I bet he'd tell his obese co-host to STFU.

Re: Gary, Keith, and Ron... and?

Elliott Maddox has said he considers himself having been a Yankee, while he merely played for the Mets. Let him analyze somebody else's team.

Re: Gary, Keith, and Ron... and?

There's more money in saying that unfortunately. The good news is he'd probably say the opposite if the Mets paid him to.

Still, it's kind of ridiculous, as Yankee-lifer (and deather) Billy Martin ran him off three seperate teams.

For sheer entertainment value, I think Tsuyoshi "Mr. Sparkle" Shinjo deserves consideration.
