Skiing and Snowboarding

Any enthusiasts on this board? I took my four-year old son skiing for the first time last weekend. If you've never done this with your kids, I highly recommend it. He loved it. Especially the chairlifts. I haven't skied regularly since I moved to the city. What places do you guys recommend that are close to the city? I'm not looking to set any records, just a nice family-friendly place where I won't spend half the day in the lift line.

I'd love to go, I guess in my mind I think it's outrageously expensive , is it? Sounds like a fun time with the family.

Not me. For me, cold+snow = misery.

The most expensive part is the gear. Ryan already had a ski jacket (his regular everyday coat) and snow pants (the ones he sleds in). A helmet, goggles and gloves (and random cool stickers for the helmet) cost around $130. The good thing is we expect he will be able to wear these things for a few years. We opted not to buy skis and the like, which really gets expensive quick. An all-day pass will cost somewhere between $40 and $60, though those rates are cheaper during the week. In the places I've gone to, kids 6 and under are free with a paying adult. Since we don't own our equipment, rentals were $33 each, but you can save on this buy renting in the area, rather than at the actual mountain. This will save you about $10 per person.

My family skis. We're in Fairfield County, CT. For us there are two little hills within an hour that are good for day trips - Ski Sundown and Mohawk Mountain . Both are family-friendly. I'd go with Mohawk over Sundown if you have to choose. No reason, I just like the way Mohawk is laid out a little better. I don't know if either of those are close enough to the City to rationalize a daytrip though, but they are closer than Vermont. In the Poconos I've skiied with the kids at Camelback and Shawnee. Camelback is the much bigger of the two and more crowded. Shawnee is smaller, less crowded. If you want to go farther, maybe do an overnight - hit the Berkshires in Massachusetts - Jiminy Peak and Butternut are both great places to do that as well. My kids have skiied at all of these places starting when they were 4 years old, taken lessons at all of them and they've all been perfectly fine.

Soupcan was nice enough to not regale us with stories from the slopes of Aspen and St. Mortiz .
