We have two cats. When I'd peek to see which one was playing, they both stopped and stared at me wide-eyed, as if they were caught doing something they weren't supposed to do. I quietly withdrew, and then the strumming started again.

Finally, one of the cats walked away, and the strumming continued, so I was able to deduce (very cleverly) which cat was doing the strumming.

Keenan and Kel was on Nickolodian (sp?) back when my kids were little (they are both now in their 20's so it's been a while). K and K were a couple of whacky teenaged boys who got themselves into Lucy and Ethel situations.

Kel loved orange soda and mentioned it at least once a show...

Keenan & Kel on Nickelodeon. The duo also made the Nickelodeon film Good Burger, which I enjoyed more than I had a right to (at that time, anything that would please three kids age 3-10 was good in my book). Keenan is now an SNL cast member.

I was the last person to travel up the Sprain Pkwy today from

Re: Apropos of nothing thread 2010

We have a lot of kids books at our house, no surprise there. But these books are messing with me.

So, book A is called "I Have To Go." One of a myriad of books about using the potty that we have at the house (I didn't buy them; Fwife did. I believe our kids should be free ranging in the yard until they figure this out.)

In "I Have To Go," the protagonist is "Little Grover." Cute Little Grover is wearing overalls and can't stop to play with Little Bert and Ernie, or Little Cookie Monster, or Little Varmit #3 etc., because he "has to go." That is to say, he has to go potty. His mom, not an attractive woman by the way, helps him out of his overalls and he goes on the potty! Sweet.

But his mom never wipes his blue butt. You'd think wiping would be important with all that fur, but whatever. Grover's mama helps him out of his overalls and then helps him fasten his straps when he's done. And shit stained, apparently.

But this isn't the most perplexing part. That's in the second book, "Grover's Guide to Good Manners." This stars the adult Grover facing different situations where he'd have to say please, thank you, excuse me, and so on. And on one page Grover is nice enough to offer his seat to a lady on a crowded bus.

Everyone on the bus is wearing clothes. Except Grover, who is naked. Polite enough to give up his seat, or maybe just wanting to air out his nether-region.

WHAT THE FUCK?

So, what I'm wondering is this:

1. At what age does Grover get to shed the little kid overalls and go au natural on the municipal bus line?

2. Is there a lot of crap stuck to his blue fur from a lack of mom-wiping? Does this irk the other bus passengers?

WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME WITH YOUR INCONSISTENCIES GROVER?

But other times, such as when riding the bus, I may pass through the world as God made me. Yes, as GOD MADE ME.

I got into a big argument with a guy on the phone about this. I've replaced my stupid HD DVR box three times in a year. We got into an argument about a refund and about what classifies "lack of service". My argument being that paying for the ability to record shows to watch later, and then losing more than a months worth of data due to their faulty and pathetic boxes, not to mention the two days I was without waiting for the cable guy (to document that the box sucked) counts as lack of service and deserves a refund of at leaset the $10 fee a month on the damn thing.

Nope. I haven't worked up the energy to call back up and A. demand a refund again, B. threaten to switch to Fios and try to get back on the intro-promotional rate.

I want to switch to a second TIVO box (got on on the SD tv) because i can then replace the cable box with a card and save ~$15/mo which is way less than the TIVO monthly charge, I just have to find the money to buy one.

Never heard of blue/black ink...I prefer black anyway.

Went out to get the paper today and saw there was a small sign on a post on my lawn. It said that chemicals had been applied to my lawn. I called the company. It is one of those lawn care companies and found out they had sprayed my lawn by mistake. My house is # 43 and they should have done # 42, across the street. Compounding the confusion is that we both have the same first name, and our last names sound similar if heard on a telephone (to order the service).
The folks told me they had sprayed weed killer, fertilizer and grub treatment, a usual cost of $190., and said if I like the result, to give them a call. They offered me a $30 discount on the next $65 refresher treatment.
Stay tuned.

Re: Apropos of nothing thread 2010

So I was talking to my friend last week, and we made tentative plans for her and her son to come visit tomorrow (Thursday). She was going to let me know Sunday or Monday whether it will work out.

I called her yesterday. She still wasn't sure. I haven't heard from her today yet.

And I'm really getting annoyed, because I'd like to be able to plan out dinner for tomorrow (with or without guests?), as well as for tonight (if we don't have guests tomorrow, then maybe we'd do the cookout tonight).

Is it too freakin' much to ask for a straight answer with less than 24 hours to go?

School bus drivers everywhere are out of control. (Although, for my money, Access-a-Ride dudes are worse-- perhaps apocryphically, they're cited in a few places as "statiistically" worst in the city-- and empty ambulance drivers only a little better.)

Somebody is either very stupid or very smart in NY State Government.
I was driving home this afternoon on rte 684 through Westchester.
There's an electric message board that only is lit for warning or caution messages.
It said
"Traffic alert.
Call 511".

Just one thing.
If I called it and a cop saw me, I'd have received a ticket for using my cell phone while driving.

Which is it, folks up there in Albany?

Nope. I live in a town just North of Danbury.
But the accident had nothing to do with the storm (although it will have an impact on response time to get hooked up again). It happened this morning , about 8 AM.
The driver of the truck said his brakes failed, and he wanted to "run into something" rather than pick up more speed as he went down our hill.
The pole is about 25 feet from the local school bus stop. At least nobody got hurt.

We're not immune to power failures by any means. But the failures that we have are more likely to come, not from local isolated issues, but from more general problems (and thus, they get a hire priority on the utilities to-do list).

This is the tack I'd imagine most MFY fans/defenders of the ad are taking, sorta. It's a tribute to people whose job is more important than theirs, and he's humbled.

Here's the problem:

1) Calculated, televised public displays of humility are pretty much the opposite of humble, aren't they? "I'm a man who appreciates how insignificant my supremely-rewarded All-Star talents are... that's the kind of man I am. By the way, check my terrible jump-throw! And d'you notice the Ford I'm driving?"

2) The guys in the ad wearing FDNY gear are stand-up comics and commercial actors, NOT FUCKING FIREFIGHTERS. To whom is he supplicating himself, exactly? Lenny Clarke and the guy who played Reggie Jackson on an ESPN miniseries?

In the movie "The Goonies," how did all of the parents know to show up at the beach right when the kids are getting away from the pirate ship at the end? And how many minutes did Chunk's parents need to decide that they were going to adopt a 35 year old 6'7" retard with twitchy ears?

Jesus, the plot holes in this thing.

It must have all been some serious sleuthing by the Astoria Sheriff's Dept. I can only assume that other parents called, too, when their kids didn't show for dinner, and then the sheriff realized that Chunk wasn't full of shit. Trying to remember what Chunk told the sheriff, but he def knew about the Fratelli's and the restaurant (yeah?), which we know is just a short bike ride away from where all the families lived. Once the pirate ship cracked through the wall and hit the Pacific, probably lots of peeps called the sheriff, and he quickly notified the families, who could then drive to the beach in a matter of minutes to meet the kids. I can't explain explain why or how Chunk's family had time to get a hot pizza, though.

The main action of "Goonies" takes place overnight, does it? I don't remember.

If not... it's still daylight on the day of the Goondocks sale, isn't it? So that shoots the not-home-for-dinner hypothesis out of the water, there.

Maybe Chunk's parents carried pizza in a hotbag (did these exist in '85?) with them, just in case of a Truffle Tantrum?

I kinda find myself hating this movie.

Yes, overnight. When the kids are biking to the restaurant, it's darker and sorta gray and Chunk complains (duh) about missing dinner. When they're underneath the restaurant later and find the wishing well, it's dark up top when that dickhead Troy pulls the bucket up. Then when they escape at the end and wind up on the beach, it's daytime again.

I am very happy I splurged for the phone insurance - it really paid off.

An underrated source of humor: when the wannabe-coach Type A (or two) on your rec/work slo-pitch team spends all game feeding semi-reliable rules/tips to everyone on the team (and being more than a little patronizing to the handful of women on the team), and then gets nailed for an easy DP because he does something like run like hell on contact when there's one out.

Unfortunately for our team's chances, we had a couple of these last night. I enjoyed myself, though... and isn't that ultimately what this is about?

I spent all day Saturday cleaning out my closet and inventorying my clothes. Have you ever done something like this?

It had been years for me and my closet was out of control and causing me daily stress. I was astonished to learn how much shit I'd accumulated, most I hardly ever wore or doesn't quite fit or whatever. I took a whole box to the Salvation Army (more than a dozen shirts, 7 or pair of pants, a few jackets), threw away the truly unsalvageable, and made a list of the stuff I kept so I don't lose track again. The closet is once again a nice place to visit.

While my wife and son are spending the day at Sesame Place I spent it at the ER over at Jacobi. I have suffered from chronic ingrown toenails for years. I can trace it back to about a week after coming to NY I had an accident on a construction site that broke both big toes. Of course having just got here I told no one and never got them treated. I have had problems since. A Podiatrist did surgical treatment a few years ago but as in some cases the ingrown problems reoccur. I would trim them back myself and about three weeks ago when doing the right big toe if felt wrong.....long story short it's infected and that's why I decided to go to the ER. There was a lot of puss discharging over the last few days and it hurt like hell since Thursday night. It was decided not to do a temporary fix today at the ER but to come back during the week to get treated by a Podiatrist , the pain of the fix is quite high and the Attending Doctor felt a few more days was OK, sent me home with antibiotics and Perocet.

At one point the Attending pulled and prodded it to show his resident what was going on , I felt plain like never before.....

On Feb. 19, 2009, The Kansas City Star reported that Guillen removed an ingrown nail himself, unbeknownst to club officials.

"The doctor saw me (Wednesday)," Guillen said, "and he said we’ll see how it feels in the morning. If it wasn't any better, he wanted me to have surgery. I thought, 'Whoaaa.' . . . So I went on my own (Wednesday) to the pharmacy, got some tweezers, came home and pulled it out myself. Let me tell you, I cried. I had one tough hour. But I got it out . . . I reached in there and poked around until I got the end of it. Then I counted one, two, three and just pulled . . . Oh, my God. It came out, but tears were running down my cheeks."

Maybe they were marshalling their carbo reserves... just in case.

Two days ago, on a crowded rush-hour F train ride (like, inadvertent-rubbing crowded) I was sharing with BetterHalfer, a seated woman-- who initially body-checked BH to get her seat-- cracked open a gigantic Caesar salad (with croutons and old-school, anchovy-loaded dressing in separate packaging), and ate the living fiber out of it, spraying little bits of creamy dressing on the pants of the people in front of her.

Twenty minutes or so later, as we get to the Van Wyck stop, she suddenly grabs her shopping bags and runs-- like, chubby-lady dead sprint-- out the doors and up the station stairs. Perhaps she was in a race.

Pretty sure the Lunchmobile has bit the big one too. All electirical functions (guages, windows, etc) quit followed by the angry thump of the transmission every time I let up onthe gas. Got it off 78 near Clinton NJ en route to the inlaws, died on the shoulder near Flemington. Got it towed to a local garage but don't expect she will be worth what it will take to fix it.

so we're in the market for a gently used wagon or small suv, preferably with a v6 + low mileage.

My laptop hinges are destroyed. The screen doesn't display because something's not connected properly inside. The screws in the laptop screen cover are stripped so that I can't get them out.

I've got it hooked up to an external now, but I had to switch windows user accounts because my normal one was locking up. Now it randomly just freezes for upwards of 30 seconds (but just the current browser/application I'm trying to type in)

The worst part? Even if I get it running properly again, I'm not sure it can handle Starcraft II.

More stupidity courtesy of your New York State Law Enforcement agnecies.

I was driving South on Rt 684 the other day.
There were two black cubes in the right hand lane, big, about 1 1/2 feet each.
Cars and trucks were swerving all over the road to avoid them.
I pulled into the rest stop a few minutes down the road and went to the office. I asked them if they had a direct line to, or a number for, the State Police.
They told me they didn't, and suggested I call 911.
I did, and said I'd like to report a serious road hazzard. I guess it was the local Police.
The operator said "Wait a minute" and transferred me.
The person picked up the phone and said "Thruway Police"
When I told him about the problem, I was told "We don't handle Route 684", and HUNG UP!
I didn't have time to ask the proper number that I should call.
I still don't know if the person then called the proper agency to have the problem resolved.

How dumb is that?

Yeah, no vista roof for us.

We did look at the Edge, briefly, but found it comically large for a non-truck, I mean, it was like a dump truck. This was the first time we ever shopped for a new car, and found 99% of them completely inappropriate for us, even those we could afford: Most were way too huge, except the ones that were too small.

We wound up flirting with the Fusion, which is a midsize sedan and very nice inside, but I was afraid I'd feel like some salesman schmo driving one around, and decided if I was going to come off as a dork, I'd rather be Practical Dad Dork.

We also checked out the new Fiesta, if you're in the market for a small car it's extremely stylish and fun, but too little storage and cramped quarters. And if I were 20 years younger, the Kia Soul would be my ride, fantastic, imaginative styling.

And it's not even the whole song. The whole thing is pretty cool -- and answers your question. It's to rally the players.

Katie Casey was base ball mad.
Had the fever and had it bad;
Just to root for the home town crew,
Ev'ry sou Katie blew.
On a Saturday, her young beau
Called to see if she'd like to go,
To see a show but Miss Kate said,
"No, I'll tell you what you can do."

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

Katie Casey saw all the games,
Knew the players by their first names;
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Katie Casey knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the gang sing this song:

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

"Hey, what you been up to?"
"I just got out of prison, do you know how I can make some quick cash?"

I'd ask him why the hell he did that and say their gonna call six

The uninstall was easy. To reinstall, though, I was directed to a page that would give me the free version of Ad Aware so long as I made a purchase (there were a lot of options, from cosmetics to Netflix to credit card offers). I could find nothing I wanted. So I went back to the Lavasoft page, and clicked again and got a different page that let me download the free version of Ad Aware without committing to any of the special offers. I found the experience a little odd.

While we're on the topic of of U-Haul, there's a pickup location in Oceanside just off Long Beach Road that I wouldn't recommend. They're slow as molasses! Took me an hour to pick (of course this was two years ago now) up my truck I had reserved, the guy was clueless, and couldn't get things to work and ended up having to phone in my info.

On our honeymoon in N'awlins we played roulette at a $5 table for a few minutes. Guy came over, threw $700 on the table, stacked his chips on various individual numbers, all black. Wheel spins, comes up 24; guy loses everything.

Guy throws $500 on the table, stacks his chips on various individual numbers, all black. Wheel spins, comes up 24; guy loses everything.

Guy throws $900 on the table, stacks his chips on various individual numbers, all black. Wheel spins, comes up 24 for the third straight time; guy loses everything, walks away $2400 poorer in the span of about five minutes. My wife and I were stunned.

So do I, but the lure is so strong. Went to Mohegan Sun two weeks ago with the intent to spend exactly ten dollars. Put a ten into the quarter slots, sat and clicked for a few minutes until it jingled and put me up $5, then I hit cash out and walked out with $15. As far as I'm concerned, I'm done for the season, up five bucks.

I wish there were dollar tables there, because I would play those for an hour for a break. $5 a hand/spin/roll is a lot for me with two little kids. We used to do a $10 per person poker night weekly right after college for a while; it'd be fun to bring that back.

The only thing that bothers me about Chrome is that there are still things that don't work on it. I spent a bunch of time trying to figure out why I couldn't download Picasa albums (albums of my wedding from other people) to my computer, which used to be an option, but it was all grayed out. fretting about privacy settings, etc. Didn't cross my mind until later that Google's photo sharing site wouldn't work properly with their browser, but yup, works fine in firefox.

You haven't heard anyone talk about this?

Supposedly, the Mississippi State offer was $180K, a "discount" (since Cam was supposedly partial to their coach) off the "true" rate of $200K.

Yahoo's Dan Wetzel makes a convincing case that it would have been a steal.

This was the first one I've seen that mentioned what Auburn would have paid.
I'm thinking that the BCS is hoping that the details anout Auburn paying a player won't come out until after the bowl season. If the NCAA declares Auburn ineligible for the BCS championship game they'd have to put a non-BCS conference team like TCU or Boise State in the game.

That sounds like a cool idea (not feasible in my apartment, but one day) actually.

Is it cumulative? Do you decorate the 7 outside? your very own christmas forest?

Guh, we're about .250. One of them is doing great, two croaked and were replaced by the succeeding year's tree in the same spot. The current occupant there isn't pretty but may make it.

We do put sandy soil underneath and around our Christmas trees. The root balls are generally too small to support the tree (a full root ball should be the width of the lower branches, but that's usually unfeasible to get in the door). Our compromise is that we get a slightly smaller tree than we would if we got a cut tree.

It's important in that first year to make sure that the tree gets plenty of water and the roots can spread easily. I use evergreen fertilizer spikes. A sunny location helps, too.

A very big thing- do NOT keep the tree in the house for more than 14 days. Otherwise it'll start to react as if Spring has come and when you put it out in the cold, you'll kill it.

Once you get past that first year you're usually OK. I don't decorate the seven trees, but I do like the idea of building my own forest.

Got hit with a ticket at 3:30 am after picking up BetterHalfer on the last night she worked (she's in hospitality management) before taking her pregnancy leave... for not coming to a full stop at an empty off-ramp/empty service road around the corner from our home. When I apologetically mentioned to the officer that I had been in a rush to get my wife home-- motioning to the eight-and-a-half-months-pregnant woman beside me-- he went back to his partner in the car, and, after running my plates and sitting in the car for 19 more minutes (I counted), hit me with an additional one, changing lanes without signaling. On an early Monday morning, with no other reason for the stop, and literally no other cars within sight range (and this was just off the Cross Bronx, where countless livery cabs threaten to take out side mirrors/street signs per hour, all night).

I paid the ticket, but not after I got his badge/ID info, and wrote a letter to the local precinct commander to complement the guy on his great judgement and humane work performance.

Phone Company Gives Scores During Series

New York fans may get the latest World Series scores by dialing 637-1212 [no need to dial area codes to make local calls back then], the telephone company's time bureau.

The scores will be updated after each half-inning. For one hour before each game, starting pitchers and other pertinent information will be announced. Final scores will be carried for one hour after the conclusion of each game.

Please do not call The New York Times for scores. Such calls interfere with the work of the newspaper.

I admittedly, was speeding. But I was literally the only car even remotely close, so I was just cruising on the flat stretch of route 4. I don't know how fast I was going, I think it was probably around 70ish. First thing he said to me was "any reason for the excessive speed?" and wrote 75 in a 50. 15-19 over is $105, 20-24 over is $200, and 25+ isn't even listed on the ticket. Traffic cops may be one step below telemarketers..

Oh, and i made the mistake of saying I was going home. (giving too much info apparently) so he gave me a hard time about my license being NY while living in NJ, and threatened to look me up in a couple of weeks and mail me a summons.

Oh, and the stupid traffic court is 9am on Friday january 7th. not exactly an overly convenient time to fight a traffic ticket.

Not as exciting as I let on. Met this girl at breakfast a month or two ago. She was drinking lots of mimosas and she asked me what I was reading, and we talked over eggs & coffee & mimosas for an hour or so, and I slipped her my # and didn't hear from her.

Ran into her yesterday (breakfast again, mimosas again) and this time she invites me out for a post-breakfast cocktail (?!) and I say 'maybe' and she calls like an hour later and says to come meet her at this bar and I do, and she's shit-hammered by this time and we rap for a while and she tells me she's a stripper & that's why she's always having cocktails so early at the breakfast joint, cause she just got off work (plus I imagine all the emotional pain from her upbringing & what-not).

Interesting chick.

She invited me for dinner sometime and I said 'maybe', but I meant 'no' and that was about that.

Ever dated a stripper before? I did once. No bueno.
