What do you think of poutine? I tried it for the first time last August, at Gretzky's in Toronto. It wasn't bad, but I prefer ketchup or chili on fries to the beef gravy. The cheese curds weren't bad, though.

Never tried it, but I totally would.

Cheese curds are deeeeeelightful. I would put the combo a half-step above a decent ketchup and chili as a fry-topper, but just shy of, say, a nice garlic aioli or spicy remoulade.

Spent a couple weeks in Quebec a few years back and ate it almost every day.

Re: Poutine Poll

Many, many, many years ago, I spent a semester in a French immersion program in Quebec City that was geared mostly for anglo Canadians. I became known for four things: - Being the nutty American who wore sneakers rather than boots no matter what the weather. - Rooting for some baseball team called the New York Mets, whoever they were. This was January of 1987 - as some of you may recall, the Mets had finished a pretty good season a few months prior. Canadians really don't dig baseball. Years later, when I went to Olympic Stadium to see an Expos game, we paid $10 per ticket and were required to sit at field level - they had closed the mezzanine and the upper deck for lack of interest. - Being Jewish. I was the only Jewish guy in the 800-student program and probably the only Jew in the entire province of Quebec outside of Montreal. I once had to explain, very slowly, to a rather naive woman from Newfoundland that no, I was not consumed with guilt because I had killed Jesus. - Hating poutine.

Do you have to pay plus for that?

I voted "loved it" because I did like it the one time I tried it but I think love is a bit too strong an emotion to describe my feelings for poutine. I'd like to try poutine with poitín.

Re: Poutine Poll

A couple of Canadian friends visited a few years ago. They were pissed when we couldn't find a restaurant that served it. When they told me what it was, I was relieved. Heart attack on a plate. Later

You have to eat the poutine, otherwise she won't return the favor. Oh wait, what? (love poutine, lived 30 miles from Canada for four years, also good with tomato sauce in lieu of gravy)

I could definitely get into the concept of substituting tomato sauce or marinara for the beef gravy.

Re: Poutine Poll

What did french fries ever do to Canadians to deserve such an awful fate? Gravy? That's disgusting enough. Cheese curd. The name tastes disgusting just saying it. Remember, this is the country that loves ketchup-flavored potato chips.

Re: Poutine Poll

Cheese curds taste like denser cheese. They're delicious. Also, they're far from exclusively Canadian-- they're popular among 'Sconnies, Minnesotans, and many other flyover brethren of ours. Did anyone else ever have something called "Disco fries"-- beef gravy with cheddar cheese slices-- while growing up in this area? The local diner where I went to HS (Scotch Plains, NJ-- go Raiders) still serves them; it doesn't work quite as well as the chicken-gravy-and-curds combo, but it'll do you (especially at the end of a NJ-bar-hopping kind of night).

My wife orders disco fries about half the time we go to diners. Waffle fries, american, swiss or mozzarella cheese, beef gravy. Delicious. Never had poutine, though. I'd probably like it.
