Freedy Fans

FYI, Freedy Johnston is having an in-store performance at Vintage Vinyl on January 16th. And FWIW, I know the owners of Vintage Vinyl. The owner is a great guy, and his wife is a huge Mets fans who has attended several games with me over the past few seasons.

He's also playing the City Winery next week. I listened to the one advance cut from the new album and think I might have to twice if I want to like it. But if you can go see him, go. He's got the goods.

That was one of two record stores I went to throughout high school. I never knew, and therefore never said anything. It's just as well, though, I suppose-- I couldn't have a warm conversation if it wasn't for lies, lies, lies.

Re: Freedy Fans

I conflate Freedy Johnston and Freddy Jones. Which isn't going to stop me from being there. Fairy, I'll look for you.

Re: Freedy Fans

Oh, I can't be there. But I wanted to pass along the word because A) I know that there are a lot of Freedy fans here; and B) Vintage Vinyl rocks. If you do go, please give Rob and Donna my best; they're good people.

Freedy will be John Platt's guest next on his Sunday Breakfast show next week (1/17). The show airs on WFUV 90.7, and streams at wfuv.org. Usually the guests come on at 10 AM and the segment runs 40-45 minutes. Normally John records interviews during the week for playback on Sunday, and they include a mix of live performances and cuts from whatever CD the guest is promoting.

You can now stream 3 cuts from the new album at freedyjohnston.com I do believe it's the first "new" one since Right Between the Promises in 2001 (!) -- which proceeded Freedy's fall off the face of the earth.

Didn't take long for me to download the whole thing. About 50/50 between somber and upbeat, some songs include wild stuff (for Freedy) like background singing and brass. Overall, not so bad. Nice little song here. [url]http://lala.com/zsjYI

Re: Freedy Fans

An annoying work emergency kept me home and at my computer until just now. By now, Freedy's probably started playing and I'm half an hour away from Vintage Vinyl. So Freedy's going to have to manage without me.

Re: Freedy Fans

Came across this video from the performance at the store. Not literally. [url]http://www.vvinyl.com/vvlibrary/vvvideo.php?video=freedy_johnston&KeepThis=true&TB_iframe=true&height=490&width=650 I'm going to come out and say after a few weeks and listens "Rain on the City" might be better than anything he's done since "Perfect World," which means it's pretty frickin good. I kinda feared he'd lost it. But he didn't.
