Jerry Hairston

FOX SPORTS' Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Mets have made contact with free agent infielder Jerry Hairston and catcher Bengie Molina. Rosenthal points out that Hairston is the only remaining free agent who can play both shortstop and center field, positions the Mets need depth at with Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran coming off surgery.

In 131 games between the Yankees and Reds, Hairston hit .251 with 10 home runs and a .328 on-base percentage. He is a career .259 hitter in 12 professional seasons.

TEN home runs?!? In ONE SEASON?!? As we've learned, that's an astronomical number!

Re: Jerry Hairston

I like Hairston, he's a good fielder at several positions, and knows where first base is.

Wow, they've made contact with Bengie Molina? You don't say!

Re: Jerry Hairston

Hairston's worth looking at if he comes fairly cheap. We're already committed to Cora in the infield, though, so I wouldn't pay extra for his defensive flexibility if I think there are better outfielders out there for the same money or less.

Re: Jerry Hairston

This just in. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse reports that due to an unfortunate typo in an inter-office memo, the Mets have just signed 57 year old Jerry Hairston Sr. to a two-year deal.

Physical scheduled for Monday.

Only the Mets would schedule a physical on MLK Day.

And a physical on a black man on MLK day. And on one whose father had played in the Negro Leagues no less.
I bet Fred and Jeff owned slaves at some point.

Re: Jerry Hairston

Not sure that JH Jr is a long-term solution at either SS or CF - but he can play either in a pinch and his versatility at several other positions makes him a useful all-around guy.

There's going to be a press conference on SNY today to assure everyone that the contact was non-sexual.

Re: Jerry Hairston

Hairston? Phooey! Get yourself ready for a little bit o' Jolbert Cabrera, bitches.

[quote="Ed Fuckin' Price of AOL":3pmg9h1h]the Mets have signed veteran free agent infielder Jolbert Cabrera to a minor league contract.

The deal also includes an invitation to spring training. Cabrera, 37, hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2008, when he batted .252/.310/.400 in 48 games with the Reds.[/quote:3pmg9h1h]

Omar gets up in the morning and finds EF'nP sitting across the breakfast table.

"You save any of that bacon for me?"

"Maybe... you got a scoop for me?"

"Fuck you, Price, and what are you doing in my pajamas?"

"You've seen AOL's stock price, Omar. I lose this job, I may be hanging out here a lot more."

"Cabrera, OK?!"

"Jolbert?"

"Yeah, we're signing Jolbert Fuckin' Cabrerea."

"Let me just open my Twitter account here and... You know, you're all heart, Omar."

"Just give me some fuckin' bacon."

Re: Jerry Hairston

Looks like broken down Eric Byrnes got DFA'd today by the D-Bags. He's a couple years removed from sustained usefulness, but he can still pick it in the OF, and in his defense, had a pretty decent Sept/Oct run last year. Given our current shituation, I'd make a phone call anyway.

Re: Jerry Hairston

Byrnes was a big target about this time last year with the 'if only 'Zona would trade him for Castillo' crowd.
I didn't like the idea then.

Not quite sure how he'd fit in here. Corner OF strictly - unless he wants to try 1B - and not a particularly good one.
Got a bunch of pub for being a "hard-nosed" type and for his goofy persona - but more sizzle than steak otherwise.

Re: Jerry Hairston

Hairston is primarily a 2B but he's played SS and everywhere in the OF so he could be a good fit for CF and to give Reyes a day-off.

Re: Jerry Hairston

UZR and +/- both love Byrnes as a corner OF, and they like him just fine as a CF. It's the bat and his funkay hamstrings that are the rub these days.

(And if you're not going to go full-bear, then you're just a half-asser.)
