Snooze's got it:

Mets Hall of Fame inductees »
BY ANTHONY MCCARRON

The Mets are having a conference call at 2 p.m. today to announce that Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Davey Johnson and Frank Cashen will be inducted into the Mets’ Hall of Fame. It’s the first time in eight years that they’ve made an induction and certainly a step toward addressing what some believe is a lack of appreciation for their own history at Citi Field.

Interesting, too, is that Gooden and Strawberry have come full circle. There was a time when they were both sort of divorced from the organization, remember?

The bowtie-sporting Cashen and Johnson are, obviously, two of the bigwigs from those great 1980s Mets teams, including the 1986 World Champs.

Amost too perfect.

Any word from Jane Jarvis's spokesman?

Don't think they've drawn the straws for that yet.

Doesn't matter because they all do them so well.

OK, who didn't know that, after ignoring this for years, they were going to make up for it by going overboard and induct a busload all at once.

Re: Straw, Gooden, Davey, Cashen to Mets HoF (?)

You want your history? You got your history! Now leave us alone!

Kinda seems that way, but I don't care. These moves are long overdue and I'm glad to see it.

Obviously Doc and Darryl have big flaws, which means they're human. It's not hall of role models, but a hall of people who had a major influence on the Mets on and off the field.

Now get one of Frank's bowties to go with that slice of wall Doc signed and get them on display!

Okay, now who wants to speculate who will end up going in from the 1999-2000 Mets?

They're all going in on August 1.

I might want to spread that out.

Re: Straw, Gooden, Davey, Cashen to Mets HoF

Spreading it out would be ideal: give each man his due, and-- as the office cynic might point out-- provide a decent PR smokescreen in case of another 70-80 win song-and-dance.

But, yeah, I'm smiling pretty unequivocally on this one.

yeah, nicely done.

How does that compare with our internal results? Did we ever wrap that one up?

Re: Straw, Gooden, Davey, Cashen to Mets HoF

This aligns with our voting, with two different voters actually and independently going so far as to suggest that this exact foursome should be the next class.

Giving eight points for first, seven for second, etc., it's...

Frank
Cashen
Dwight
Gooden
Jane
Jarvis
Davey
Johnson
Mike
Piazza
Darryl
Strawberry
Bobby
Valentine
Rube
Walker

So I went Cashen-Davey-Rube-Doc-Darryl?

No wonder I'm pleased with these results. If you take out Rube Walker, who probably never had much of a chance, this selection matches my preferences.

Jeff

“It was very important to re-establish the Mets Hall of Fame Committee,” said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, who serves as Ex-Officio for the Selection Committee. “The committee made great choices and all four inductees played a vital role in our success during the 1980s. Each individual was a unanimous recommendation and on behalf of myself and the rest of Ownership I was pleased to approve them.”

The Mets Hall of Fame now has 25 members. The 21 previous Hall of Fame members in order of the year they were inducted are: Joan Payson (1981); Casey Stengel (1981); Gil Hodges (1982); George M. Weiss (1982); William A. Shea (1983); Johnny Murphy (1983); Ralph Kiner (1984); Bob Murphy (1984); Lindsey Nelson (1984); Bud Harrelson (1986); Rusty Staub (1986); Tom Seaver (1988); Jerry Koosman (1989); Ed Kranepool (1990); Cleon Jones (1991); Jerry Grote (1992); Tug McGraw (1993); Mookie Wilson (1996); Keith Hernandez (1997); Gary Carter (2001); and Tommie Agee (2002).

The plaques of all the inductees will be one of the main attractions at the new Mets Hall of Fame and Museum which will open this season.

The Mets Hall of Fame committee was re-formed in November. The seven-member committee is comprised of a combination of media members with long-standing connections to the club and the Mets front office staff. The members are: Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations who has been with the organization for 18 years; Jay Horwitz, Vice President, Media Relations who enters his 31st season with the team; Tina Mannix, Senior Director, Marketing who has been with the Mets for nine years; former Mets pitcher Al Jackson, a pitching consultant who is entering his sixth decade with the Mets; Marty Noble, the Mets.com beat writer who is entering his fifth decade covering the team; Gary Cohen, the New York native and voice of the Mets on SNY who has been a Mets broadcaster for 21 years; and Howie Rose, a Queens native and radio voice of the Mets on WFAN who has covered the team for 21 years on radio and televisio

I made it a different sort of poll because I had come to understand in the previous rounds that the overwhelming support for most of the candidates would have made a final yes/no vote superfluous, and, sensing the consensus that most of the finalists were considered worthy, decided to poll the voting body on whom they considered most worthy.

It's pretty much there in the first post, isnt' it?

I'd only go with Piazza and Alfonzo, but I'd guess Franco and Leiter would somehow get in.

Re: Straw, Gooden, Davey, Cashen to Mets HoF

Pretty much. See the story about how Rick Ferrell got into the Baseball HOF.

Hell, just look at the years Frankie Frisch was on the Veterans Committee!

I'm just saying Leiter and Franco just have some friends in high places at this point in time.

You could make a case for Leiter, but then Darling and Matlack supporters would be wondering when their guy will get in. And Franco, well fine if Ed Kranepool is in because he was around for so long.

But he's got friends. He's not saying, he's just saying.
