Cyclones cater to little kids, discriminate against big kids.

Cyclones Promote "Youniform" Jersey Design Contest
January 20, 2010 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) Brooklyn Cyclones

Brooklyn, NY, January 20, 2010 - The Brooklyn Cyclones are inviting young fans to participate in a unique art contest, with the winning jersey design to be worn by the team as a special, limited-edition YOUniform, and auctioned off after the game to support Camp Brooklyn.

Students between the ages of 5-16 (BOOOO!!) have the opportunity to submit a baseball-and/or-Brooklyn-themed jersey design for consideration. A Cyclones panel will determine five finalists, whose designs will be posted on the team's official website, brooklyncyclones.com. Fans will then vote online for their favorite jersey, and the winning design will be announced on Wednesday, March 17th. The winner will receive a Cyclones prize pack, a framed jersey signed by the 2010 Cyclones, and will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the game in which their YOUniform will be worn (date TBD). All entries will be showcased in an "art show" at the ballpark's Brooklyn Baseball Gallery.

"Young fans have always played a tremendous role in our success," said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen, "and our YOUniform contest now gives them a chance to truly be a part of the action, both on and off the field. One talented winner will be extremely happy and many more kids will benefit, thanks to the contest's association with Camp Brooklyn."

Camp Brooklyn was founded by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to give children from low-income homes an opportunity to attend a sleepaway camp at no cost to the camper. The Camp Brooklyn Fund gives these children a chance to leave their urban environment and learn about teamwork, loyalty, wholesome health habits, responsibility, personal respect and appreciation for nature.

"Let's face it, Brooklynites adore baseball and when it comes to our beloved Brooklyn Cyclones, we wear our hearts on our sleeves," said Markowitz. "Now budding Brooklyn artists can showcase that love by submitting designs for a special Cyclones jersey. Not only will the Cyclones wear the jerseys featuring the winning design, but auction proceeds will benefit Camp Brooklyn and allow needy Brooklyn kids, like I once was, to have fun in the great outdoors at summer camp. Cyclones baseball, artistic talent, and helping others: now that's what we call a Brooklyn triple play!"

The Brooklyn Cyclones are a Short-Season Class A affiliate of the New York Mets. In its first nine seasons of play, the team has led the New York-Penn League, and the entire Short-Season classification, in attendance each year, drawing nearly 2.5 million total fans to Coney Island's KeySpan Park. The Cyclones have advanced to the postseason six times, and won a league championship in 2001. In 2010, the team's 10th season, Brooklyn will be managed by former New York Mets star and 1986 World Series champion Wally Backman.

I've been dressing Wally Backman in my mind for years now --- decades, actually. And if I've got to use a kid as a front in order to fulfill my dream and dress him in actuality, I will.

Wally always has had kind of a Ken doll vibe.

I always thought of him and Lenny (retrospectively) as Bowery Boys or Fagin's orphans with stubble.

Sasser, too.

Re: Youniform

See, you're going in the right direction. I'm incorporating a Jughead-type felt crown --- a standard touchstone of the midcentury ruffian --- into my uniform.

Re: Youniform

In fact, just take that kid pictured above, spell B-R-O-O-K-L-Y-N across the various pieces of bling on his crown, replace the wiener with a firstbaseman's glove, and I think that's my design.
