Three Decades of Wilponianism

Fred's thirtieth anniversary (1/24/1980) observed here, begging the question, what do you want from your club owner?

That's any theoretical, prospective or actual owner, not just the Wilpons (in which case the snappy comeback would be "to sell the team").

Re: Three Decades of Wilponianism

What I'd want in an owner:

I'd like to be able to go to a game and feel appreciated. Little things for fans make a difference. let me in to see batting practice. Have some fun give-aways.

I don't want to be insulted. $4.50 for a Diet Coke is insulting.

I want to know that you appreciate that you don't actually own the team, but are a caretaker of an important fabric of our lives, which sounds goofy but is true.

We could do a lot worse , a back handed compliment perhaps but I really think we are OK in this regard.

I think so too. I'm glad that the Mets have owners who are willing to spend money and try to win. I wish they were wiser about it, but I'll take the Wilpons over the de Roulets every day of the week.

I think the 'Pons themselves would make for a fascinating bio. I really do think they want what's best, but they're weird. They pick odd priorities and huge blind spots, seem to completely forget what they're supposed to be doing very so often.

I agree with the last three comments.

Re: Three Decades of Wilponianism

I want an owner with flaming eyes and the touch of acid. Batwings and a piercing sonic scream. I want an owner who's ten feet tall if he's an inch. If there's ever a hostile force rolling into the city, I want to be able to say, "It's OK, my baseball team's owner is guarding the bridge."

That's what I want in an owner.

I think you just described Marge Schott.

Do we still click exclamation points? I nominate both of the prior posts.

Re: Three Decades of Wilponianism

The last time the NL baseball team from NYC (with more money to spend than just about everybody else) finished in first place, The Simpsons didn't exist and Fernando Martinez wasn't born. The last Mets team to win its division had Gene Walter on the roster. Fred's better than Lorinda. I'll give him that.

BML: The Simpsons were extant-- if a little attenuated-- in 2006, IIRC. (Fartinez, too.)

There was this year called 2006. You weren't in a coma then, were you?

Yes I was. Apparently, I've also succesfully blocked out of my mind everything involving idiot manager Willie Randolph.

Apology accepted. But like I said, Fred's still better than Lorinda. I still give him that.

Five-year-old David Wright celebrates the Mets' 1988 divisional championship while exulting over news reports that a pilot will be spun off from those animated characters he likes so much on The Tracey Ullman Show.

FYI, the drinking and smoking age was a lot lower then.

I want Robert Plant to buy the Mets and rock the mofro out of the juke joint. Or something like that.

I interviewed Marge once, over the phone. She was out there...but still kind of charming. One of the most unusual conversations I've ever had in my life.
