God Bless him

The A's have been desperate for power in the lineup, and now they are losing one of their top power prospects ... who is apparently going to follow a higher power.

Grant Desme, who hit 31 homers in 2009 in Class-A last year, is retiring from baseball, and he plans to pursue a life in the priesthood. Desme is scheduled to explain his decision to the media on Friday afternoon.

From a purely baseball standpoint, it's a tough loss for the A's. Desme, 23, was recently ranked the No. 8 prospect in the A's system by Baseball America. His stock had risen with a nice showing in the Arizona Fall League, where he won the MVP.

"Every time I saw the guy he was hitting the ball off the wall or over it," a scout who saw Desme in the Arizona Fall League told FanHouse. "He was a good hitter. He'd have been a major leaguer for sure."

The scout went on to say that Desme had the talent to be an "occasional All-Star

I'd try to do them both. You're only young once... ask them to trade you to the Padres.

Is it true that when you're this hot, you're seeing other people's words in slow-motion?

Obviously they didn't pay him above slot or something right?

Are you thinking that he's thinking he'll make up the difference via the collection plate?

Sickels gave him a 'B' grade (only a few dozen got higher) and had him ranked 4th in a very deep Oakland system.
This guy sounds like he was not just a minor leaguer but also a good to seriously-good prospect.

I think now he's projected to be an Archbishop.

Neyer was more skeptical of him as a prospect.

Perhaps it was his pigeon-toed batting stance.

I thought Billy Beane considered himself the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of baseball.

Just got the annual appeal for the diocesan seminary last week. It almost prompted ME to run away.

I confess, I had no idea.

Mea culpa.

I certainly wish him the best in his endeavor.
A noble calling.
But it also makes me hope that Jenrry Mejia is an athiest.

Guess he's rather work with the Angels. Kinda like Joel Pinero.

I guess he left baseball because he didn't want to be stuck in a male-only occupation that's under great scrutiny due to a shocking scandal.
