The Memories of Brian Stokes Thread.

I remember Brian's coming being marked with scomething less than a warm welcome from Valadius.

Re: Stoking the Flames of Memory

He shares a birthday with my daughter. And this will likely change soon, but for the moment his Wikipedia page features a picture that I took this season.

This being the image, taken on Father's Day from the Modell's Zone -

I like that photo. I may end up using it for Stokes' UMDB page.

Stokes, by the way, was a five-time winner of the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month award, twice in 2008 and three times in 2009.

Re: Stoking the Flames of Memory

Getting Pujols to hit into a double play with the bases loaded (6/22/09) has to be the high point.

He was a good situational guy for us, but his control unraveled as the innings piled up. Still, he didn't come completely unhinged like a few Mets relievers have over the past couple of years.

Beveric Benton (Belve) Bean. Played for Cleveland from 1930 to 1935, and with the Senators for 10 games in 1935.

Re: Stoking the Flames of Memory

The Mets only trusted him to do so much, but he made a pretty good showing for himself and he certainly proved worth the "risk" of picking up. That said, I think you gotta move these easy-come, easy-go placeholders while you can, get some good and move onto the next.

I think my best memory was finding his wedding photos on the Internet.

Between Schneider and him, we've taken a significant hit in the WAG-hotness department.

Matthews had a hot paternity suit laid on him.

You have been honored!

This is the second time I've used a photo you took. The other was of a pitcher whose name escapes me. It was from a few years ago. (Jamie something?)

Very nice :)

The other pitcher was Jaime Cerda, whom we remember fondly because he was very nice to my kids on a couple of occasions.

Re: Stoking the Flames of Memory

For about ten minutes there in first ten or so days of September 2008, I was amazed we were riding the Stokes-Ayala combination through the eighth and ninth innings. Imagine such an unlikely setup/closer pair clearing the way to a division crown!

Imagining, alas, was all we were left to do.

Stokes was another of those guys I was always forgetting when trying to remember who was on the roster at any given moment. Every year there's a couple. In 2009 there must have been a dozen.

In my defense, he had a god-awful track record before he arrived.

If you are a watcher of the History or the Military Channels, you have heard this:
When Hermann Goering first saw P-51 Mustang fighters escorting the Allied bombers over Germany, he knew that the war had been lost.

When I saw the Stokes-Ayala closer combo, I felt the same.

Re: Stoking the Flames of Memory

The Mets lost on the last day, so I certainly didn't think the season was definitely lost until it was definitely lost, no matter who was in the pen.
