That's a Good Contract

One year ago, the Royals came up with a $38 million dollar extension for an ubertalented but puzzling young pitcher named Zach Greineke, coming off a 13-10, 3.47 ERA, 202 IP season. In the first year of that contract he put up something like an end-of-the-century Pedro Martinez season, and the Royals paid $3.25 million for it, less than, for instance, the Yankees paid Damaso Marte. He's now due $7.25 million in 2010, and $13.5 million in 2011 and 2012 --- figures you'd naturally jump at in light of his 2009 season. It's almost painful thinking what he'd be worth on the open market today had he rejected that extension. And he's only 26.

Great to see him have that season and as a fan I hope he continues it. It's pitchers like him that make me tune in to watch other teams , unfortunately that didn't happen last season. Hopefully MLB Network shows some Royals games , or if they play the MFY and he's pitching I'm watching.

Also, he might be fun to talk to about the game, seeing as he's quite the stathead, pointing to stuff like FIP when talking about his relative chances versus other Cy candidates last year. (I've got to find that interview.)

yeah, would like to see more of him on a national stage. Fox and ESPN always drop the ball in that regard. Honestly, I think this is where the Mets were going with the Perez contract. Grienke conquered his issues and made the Royals look kinda smart in that regard. Perez worsened what probably would've been a nothing injury in the WBC and was out all season.

comparing Greinke to Perez? didn't think I'd ever hear that...
