Throwing Off a Mound

I've always wondered, why is this such a significant step in the recovery of a pitcher? How is it more taxing to throw off a mound, then say, off of flat ground?

It must put more stress on the legs for one, and it's probably one of those old baseball things that is just part of the way things are done.

I assume there is a certain degree of "bringing it" that is there when you're throwing off a mound, as opposed to playing catch.
