Going to the Game 2010...

Rockin' Doc
Jan 26 2010 09:39 PM

The wife and I are going to see the Mets take on the Orioles in Camden Yard on Sunday, June 13th. We're making it the game the centerpiece of a 3 day weekend on Baltimore's Harbor.

stay in a hotel in the harbor, or stay out in the burbs.... we've had too many tourists get mugged around here after finding cheap hotels in the not so nice areas...

I think that Orioles series is on my list (along with 4th of July weekend in Washington) of "road games that I'll probably go to if the Mets are good."

--

I don't think I've mentioned it here but this year's schedule worked out nicely and I was able to plan a road trip in July in which I'll be taking in 2 Mets games each at SF, ARZ and LA.

Late last year, KC and I encountered a soft opening of the new Asian offerings at world's fare, they were giving away the chicken and kimchi. Not bad IIRC.

Re: Going to the Game 2010...

I dig on Korean chicken in general... but I'm often coming from the Main St. side of the 7, so the World's Fare stuff will have some stiff competition for satisfying my pregame Chinese bun/chicken/kimchi/fish ball urges.

But as for the bro-hemian paradise of McFadden's*? Nothing matches this one, Pay-bro. Fist-pumpin' pregame, and chick-pumpin' postgame? FUCK AND YES, BRO McEWING! I SEE NO WAY THIS WILL MAKE CITIFIELD MORE THUGGISH OR DATE-RAPE-Y! PREGAME ON, MUTHAFUCKAZZZ!

I have a pretty Metly first week this year ...

Got a single opening day ticket, LF Landing Gold -- looking forward
to tailgate with D-dad, Et al.

Have two for Wed 4/7 that can be had by a known cranepooler for
a fedex third party shipping number and daytime address on me.
(Prom Club 430 row 2 - my Sunday seats)

Have two for Thur 4/8, hoping that JCL will take me up for freezing
and gossip in The Coop's LF seats.

Have two for Fri 4/9 -- GKR Luxury Suite gathering -- woo hoo!! Ya
think Keith will show his mug?

Have Two for Sun 4/11, in the Sunday seats.

There's no way I'm missing the Fourth of July series right in my own backyard.

In non-Mets GttG, the White Sox are coming to Washington from June 18-20, meaning the President is going to show up at at least one of those games.

-- Chicken and Waffles at Nats Park

Monday, May 17: the Mets first trip to Atlanta in 2010, and $1 upper deck ticket night. Which, by my experience with Turner Field crowds, will quickly becomes $1 terrace level or $1 outfield bleacher night for me. Very downward-mobile park.

Interested in attending weekday matinees this year, at least 1 or 2, with my son. For those out there with season seats, I'd be willing to buy a pair of tickets from some CPF'er who can't use them in this situation. First one on the docket that I am eyeing is Wednesday 4/28 vs. Los Angeles.

I did this last year and it worked out great, except the CPF'er in question did not renew their season tickets for 2010.

True. This early in the season I can even get reasonably good seats through Ticketmaster. But the fees, holy hell.

I thought this could benefit both myself and someone else, who could save a few bucks by not having to sell tickets they can't use through Stub Hub or eBay. It wouldn't cost anyone more than a postage stamp and I'd be willing to pay face value for them.

Re: Going to the Game 2010...

Fboy and I will be at Citi Field on Wednesday April 28th for the Mets/Dodgers 1:10 tilt.

Last year we got killed in traffic -- 45 extra minutes in and 2 hours back out, just to drive from the Grand Central to the Triboro to the Deegan and out to the Thruway north. Not sure if there's a better choice... was just checking the train schedule and I wouldn't save any time by driving to, say, Beacon, and taking the Metro North to GC and picking up the 7 train.

I may drive down to my parents' house in Ulster County the night before so that we can have a short train ride in the next morning... not that the wife will be happy with that choice as that will essentially be two nights that we're gone instead of one.

Is there a better, less traffic-y escape from Queens on a weekday after 4 PM? I have to believe that it'd suck way more trying to cross Manhattan into New Jersey... The Throgs Neck? The Whitestone?

Happy for any useful advice anyone has.

Re: Going to the Game 2010...

If you're heading back towards Ulster County (or points north), you might try taking the Whitestone bridge to the Hutchinson River Parkway. Take the Hutch north to I-684 North, to I-84 West to I-87. Might be an extra 10 miles out of your way but probably gets out out of the city limits as fast as possible.

That's the way to go Fman. I go in that direction back to CT after games. If you hit traffic at all, it'll be light and only as you are getting on to the Whitestone bridge. The lack of congestion will more than make up for any extra distance you travel.

What Fairy said. Also, they've redone the Promenade plaza behind home plate-- more vending and seating options, Beer Island II, a second Blue Smoke BBQ outpost, and a gigantic TV screen-- so as to be far more hospitable to a mid-game, 1-2 inning hang (if need be).

The Gwreck household put a ban on Citizens Bank Park in early 2008 and haven't returned but the rainout robbed us of baseball this week and we are now very much considering it for either Friday night or Saturday.

As part of the Brewers/New York Mets game, the Brewers will wear reproductions of uniforms worn by the Milwaukee Bears, the city's 1923 representative in the Negro National League.

She'd have no problem going to the game as an anniversary activity... in fact we may go to a Syracuse Chiefs game that day. She's just not big on long car trips.

We will likely take in a Saturday game this year, where we can depart from my parents' house in the Hudson Valley and split the driving up over multiple days. She's eager to sample the gluten-free fare they have now and see the new place (so far only Fboy and I have gone from our family).

In Cali, it was two a month for a 10% reduction. Nobody wins with furloughs...I hear this year, they'll just propose a straight 5% slash.

On the plus side, graduation was May 1 and my next teaching day is September 7, so I'm not complaining. (too much)

Re: Going to the Game 2010...

So, Mets are in Baltimore on June 12th and I've never been. (That's 6 consecutive against NY. Think they'll be sick of it?) But it's far. Fiance has confessed interest in seeing the Bisons. Also far (I went to school in Buffalo, have friends there, which changes things). Majors over minors? Minors probably being a lot cheaper and also probably factors in awesome wings. Actually, definitely factors them in, that's pretty much a given. Baltimore also offers the opportunity to maybe go to the Smithsonian or something on the way home, which is something we were thinking of doing earlier in the season and seeing the Nats, but didn't.

I'm torn. It's probably 50/50 we wimp out and do nothing but stay home. Or drive to Port Jeff and taste cake, but that's a pain of a drive too.

Buffalo may offer wings, but Balto comes correct with stone crab, softshell crab, crab cakes, and several other brands of seafood-y deliciousness that don't involve crab.

I live right here by Port Jeff, and I'm pretty sure we don't have any baseball here, unless you count the Ducks, but they're at least a half hour's drive. Plenty of places to find cake, though.

I'm getting married in Miller Place, the 'cake' would be Wedding cake to decide on.

and I don't like crab, so the cuisine in Baltimore isn't as appealing.

I'd prefer baltimore I think, although competing with Jersey Shore traffic going south doesn't sound overly fun either.

That way I don't get bilked for $35 in handling fees, the way all of these resellers do, or pay $16 in eBay shipping fees for something that costs 41 cents to mail.

Is there a handling fee when buying tickets at the gate?

As long as I don't mind paying a little extra, to sit in the better seats, I figure that they aren't selling out these weekday matinees anyway and we'll have options.

That's my plan.

It's a reasonable option. no fees at the gate. I'd recommend checking mets.com just to verify that there are plenty seats available in the price range though. But definitely should be able to get a smattering of decent selection. I'd avoid LF outfield though, unless you're in the front couple of rows of the 400, 300 or 100 level sections.

Why is this? Obstructed views? My bigger concern is being on the third base side, if I remember correctly, so that we're shaded and not baking in the direct sun for 3-4 hours.

Thinking that instead of the July 29th matinee, I may take Fboy to both the August 10th 7 PM game and the August 11th matinee also, with a stop in between at my parents' house for the night. That's a Wednesday-Thursday and I'm already taking that Monday-Tuesday off to go to Sesame Place.

That's a long week right there, but Fboy told me is up for it (no surprise). I think he would like Citi Field even more at night.

LF infield seems fine, but as you start to bend around the foul pole it gets bad. certain parts of the promenade will obscure a good swatch of LF/CF. obviously if you're in the OF you won't be able to see the LF wall, but that's just how it goes. if you're in the lower sections, it's much like the loge. As you go about haflway back you won't be able to see pop flies or the scoreboard.

The 10th is a Tuesday. If you're doing the Wednesday/Thursday, it's the 11th and 12th.

I'll be there the 10th and 11th. And we're doing the McFadden's thing on the 11th, so I'll definitely be there before the game - if you go that night, think about it. A ticket, appetizer, pre-game unlimited drinks (Fboy can have sodas) and a post-game drink coupon. Not a bad deal at all!

Whether you do the McFadden's deal or not, hopefully we'll have a chance to say hi :)

Ah. But that's where you're wrong-- in the 500s, the view from the first row or two is obscured a bit by the "see-through" railings in the front of each section.

You're golden, though. (And well within t-shirt cannon range, should you feel like decapitating a youngster or two to grab some flimsy blue-and-white cotton in shirt shape.)

It's a little detached, mainly because the bulk of the fans are closer to the plate, so crowd noise and what not plays in. (not that there was a crowd last night) In a more important game where the #1 focus is living and dying on each out because its' a big deal, I'd rather be by the plate, but for a game with less importance, I enjoy the different vantage point. It's a fun place to razz the CFer from too. (not that I do that sort of thing)

But I enjoyed it. It's important to be in the front half-dozen or so rows for visibility's sake (and full scoreboard viewing), but I was in row 4 and there was plenty of room to move around last night. Maybe outfield seats are still a bit of a novelty to me given Shea's layout, but I had fun out there. It's a different perspective, I moved over to the CF camera at one point and enjoyed that too. mimicked watching it on TV in a way. Way better judge of outfield flies, and the outfielders in general. Could see right into the Mets bullpen house (and bathroom).

As of right now I have no more plans for games the rest of the year. I'm sure I'll go to one or two more, but I've got a pretty busy schedule this year. If they start rattling off 9/10 routinely though, and somehow get back in it, i'll be there.
